Interesting article...much credit to the writer. I have about 75 G1 figures from my childhood, and maybe another 70 from the movie and universe lines plus a few select animated. So I consider myself to be an avid collector. However I must protest against all foreign companies who sell plastic figures for hundreds of dollars. This is highway robbery. There is no shortage of plastic or cheap labor in Asia. But in reality you gotta blame the buyers because they allow this to happen by giving in to temptation. If they keep buying, Henkei and others will keep selling and I dont blame them. We seem to get so caught up into the collecting aspect, we forgot that these are just toys. This reminds me of what happened to baseball cards. Collectors robbed kids of the hobby by demanding Topps and Donruss to improve theyre quality to Upper Deck standards in the early 90's. All my cards that were worth a hundred bucks then, are now worth under 10 bucks because the kids got sick of being excluded due to high costs and said "**** these collecters !!!" as a result, the demand for cards went down and so did their value. Not sure what the values are in middle america but here in Miami they are not worth ****. Things are a little different in urban areas. Lets hope these greedy asian companies and extravagant collectors dont do the same thing to transformers. Or in ten years Ill be buying their Henkei collections for 40 bucks on e-bay if they kill the hobby.

Mock me all you want, I was simply poking fun. Half of the stuff on that list is overpriced and is going to be ridiculous to find in the secondary market. I'm simply fascinated at what lengths people would go to get figures that don't look out of the ordinary or are simply repainted figures.

Take those minicons for example. No way in hell I'd pay that much even if I am an Armada collector and Mini-con completionist.

Bwah, what am I even saying.. I payed my friend to get Powered Commander >_>

Don't underestimate cheese. It's pretty vital for me to function properly. Plus.. 2 Slabs of Cheese + 2 Deluxes + 2 Voyagers > 2 Exclusive Mini-cons that I can probably imitate by painting over the mass produced ones.

The answer of course is scalping. Everytime a new figure is announced go out and preorder 1000 of them. When you receive them mark em up $1 and resell 999 of them. Free figure!!!

The argument that buying something that's overpriced is both pointless and irrelevant to a collector.

Mkall, thank you for including us little guys who own only a handful of TF's in the Collector category, but I don't think we truly are.

I aspire to be a collector. Yes I have a few Japanese figures like Henkei Skywarp and Thundercracker. Sure I preordered Thrust and Dirge when they were announced. Yeah I forked out the 80 bucks to get a City Commander upgrade set for my Classics Ultra Magnus figure and (thanks to Mkall) will be getting the Powered Commander set. And aside from Botcon figures, thats about the extent of "exclusive" or "expensive" figures that I own. I own most of the Classics line, a few Movie figures, only two authentic G1 figs. All in all my collection doesn't break 50 TF's and I hesitate on alot of purchases causing me to miss out on them. Thats not a collector.

The collector will find the means to get the figure he/she desires. Price is not an issue for most cases and the rarer the figure, the more its desired.

Don't look down on someone just because they're willing to fork over 50 dollars for a minicon. For one its there prerogative and two, if you could see just how sweet those minicons are in the eyes of that collector, you'd be forking over 60 so you can get them before the other guy.

I'd love to be considered a collector but so many of you guys here put me to complete shame not only in TF count but in quality, displaying and rarity.

In this life there are so many things that are designed to bring us nothing but pain and anguish. Get what brings you joy in piece, I say.

First Gen, the way I see it, you definitely are a collector. I think it's silly when people say if you collect "YOU MUST HAVE" this figure or that figure. The beauty of collecting is that everyone can make their own rules.

For instance, I've been in the vaunted "Transformer room" at Counterpunch's house and he has a lot of figures I will never have, both in terms of total count and exclusivity. Ironically though I ended up trading him something that he had never seen before, a Yellow Cliffjumper that came with a cassette tape called Sun Raid, which was never opened before.

The point here is that unless you buy every single Trasnformer ever made, no two collections will ever be the same, and they don't have to be. As long as you're having fun, that's all that counts, man.
