I'm not a practitioner of any Martial Art, but they keep getting my interest. My only real exposure was Aikido given by shop class teacher in school, but nothing else.

3 years of karate, 2 of boxing and 3 more years of jui jitsu. I also used to live next to a man that studied different styles while he grew up in China. He came to the states so he can get a better opportunity for his grand kids. I learned northern praying mantis from him. And now I'm on way of learning the different styles they used to design bending from Avater The Last Airbender. Northern Shoalin- fire, Hungar- earth, Bagua- air and Tai Chi- water.

As experienced martial artists, is there any good, useful, information that can be applied from books/videos? I want to continue practicing Muay Thai, but my financial situation isn't the best. So naturally, books and videos are my only option for now.

Some videos and books can be useful for the theory or the philosophy behind the various arts, styles or schools.

But also pointless if you do not practice with someone who has practical experience.
(As with most things, really: you can know the recipes by heart, but if you never cook, you'll never learn.)

I used to attend regular judo classes, got to green belt, and then had to move country for my studies. I tried Uni judo clubs, but they're all aweful, and have a very sport-oriented mentality and competitiveness. Which actually contradicts most of my school's beliefs.
We did have fights, competitions and the like, but never as a "IWILLKILLYOU" scene or like what you see in the Olympics. Form should always be minded, it's nothing to do with the body type, height or weight or muscle mass.

And you're not learning it to be cool, or to learn how to fight in real life.
If that's your attitude, you should stop immediately and have a serious think about it.
That's what a lot of clubs I've seen are about, unfortunately.

*sigh*

So yes, try some books, but also try finding people who practice the styles you're interested in! Even if money's an issue, there are some decent classes around, you just need to look.

I'm a blue band in Muay Thai. I've had to stop going to my Muay Thai gym for a while, though. I sustained an injury to my foot at the time, and I couldn't keep justifying paying £50 a month with Christmas looming back then. I dunno when I'll go back since the extra money is great right now, but I know I will go back to it sometime. I took it up initially when I was 15 for a year or so, but had to stop since I relocated. I love Muay Thai though.
