Is this it? According to this site which has a ton of photos, "It was from a toyline known as the Mysterians, produced by Marchon, Inc. in 1984". They also have a link to a site in Japanese with even more photos.

Holy crap the "Air Commander" has a few interesting things going on with it....



I guess the thing can detach but still a little strange.
