Wheeljack's Lab

Red Alert stayed close to Wheeljack's side. The engineer had believed that he had let down his guard. Well, apparently, anyway. For all Red knew, the white mech was leading him into a more elaborate kind of trap, but so long as Wheeljack's story matched up with Ultra Magnus's version, he might actually begin to relax. Well. Enough as one could with apocalypse looming. Wheeljack gestured for him to come to a corner of the lab. A trap? Maybe. But one worth triggering. Red Alert complied.

“Ultra Magnus wanted me to mainly focus on repairing the transwarp drive, which I did before helping to bring the generators back online. Magnus has a last resort option by which I will activate the transwarp drive and basically teleport a chunk of the planet, with the Fallen on it, into the nearest star. This is only if all other options at trying to defeat the Fallen and rescue Hot Rod have failed. It’s not something I’m happy about, but if it’s the only way to save the universe then I’ll have no choice."

Red Alert's optics went wide as Wheeljack explained. This was...it...wasn't...good. If Ultra Magnus really was willing to do that then...Primus.

“Although, I do hope to direct the transwarp beam enough to isolate only Ayers Rock, itself, which will hopefully avoid as much collateral damage as possible. Of course, our Autobot comrades will need to retreat from the area before the transwarp can be activated, but there’s no guarantee that we might not lose some of them."

“This is...hard to swallow, 'Jack...” Red muttered thoughtfully, stricken paranoia-less by the sheer implications of this course of action. Someone possessed couldn't really...come up with this on the spot, and someone like the Fallen probably didn't need to send them into the sun to get the job done. But...that fail-safe...No...maybe...He didn't know. It was too much! Red remained silent as he considered it all. Wheeljack was going to have to be the one to pull the trigger on that. Red...couldn't...let him do that. That would..be...Red already had issues. He couldn't deny that. He could handle one more. But if it wasn't true then....Before Red could come to a decision on a course of action, Wheeljack let him know that Prowl had contacted him.

“You’re more than welcome to come along if you want, Red."

“Thanks, 'Jack...” the security director accepted without hesitation. Regardless of Wheeljack's intentions, he wasn't going to let the mad scientist do this alone. He was on Wheeljack's heels as the pair walked briskly out of the lab and into the corridors beyond.

Bounce Chamber

As the pair arrive in the bounce chamber, Red watched Wheeljack begin to fiddle with the sensors and mutter things out loud to himself. Mechs were going to think that 'Jack was crazy if he kept that up. Red didn't exactly have anything to add, so he just kept quiet and listened. A nagging thought plagued his thoughts. Why hadn't Ultra Magnus replied to him yet? It was a dire situation. If what Ultra Magnus said didn't match up with Wheeljack then...well...He had the inhibitor claw ready.

Communique from Ultra Magnus

"Modifications acknowledged and understood Wheeljack. The radiation belt around the vortex shield is slowly intensifying. I am transmitting new starting coordinates along with this transmission. Initiate transport as soon as the required signals are at the established coordinates."

"Red Alert, current operational details are strictly defined under the confidential protocols Alpha Tango Zeta Phi. It is a level that cannot be discussed under open channels and will only be briefed by the sector commander or of someone of similar rank. In other words, turn your attention to a more lucrative investment in this operation. Contact the scouts positioned around the perimeter of the battle site, and see if any of them have gained a detailed scan of the shield. Use that data to aid those on board to bring that barrier down."

Wheeljack waited patiently by the bounce controls for word back from either Prowl or even Ultra Magnus. All the while, Red Alert stood near him silently, having not objected to anything the mechanical engineer had done so far. At least, not yet anyway. It was only a matter of time before Red’s paranoia got the better of him again and then things could get very dicy for the inventor. ‘Jack glanced over at the door, hoping that Tracer would have followed close behind them. Thus far, she had not yet arrived.

“I hate waiting,” Wheeljack commented, finally breaking the silence between him and Red Alert. “Waiting and not knowing what is happening is always the toughest part.” The mad scientist smiled, his face shield still pulled back. He was simply trying to make small talk, but he feared it would ultimately incite more oversuspicious delusions from his comrade. And thus he grew quiet once more and focused on the task at hand. Then a transmission finally came in from Ultra Magnus down on the surface.

Once the message was fully received, Wheeljack opened his comm channel back to the planet below:

>>”I read you Commander Magnus. Understood. I will bounce you and your team shortly.”<<

The engineer kept a close optic on the sensory display which showed whatever the radiation belt the City Commander had just mentioned did not obscure. Slowly, one by one, each of Magnus’ team, including the Autobot leader, himself, began to emerge from the disruption. “There they are!” Wheeljack exclaimed with a hint of joy as his actuators danced across the controls. Within astroseconds, the inventor had a secure lock on all six mechs down on the surface.

>>”Commander Magnus. I have a lock on all of you. Initiating bounce protocols now.”<<

“Well, here goes nothing,” Wheeljack said as he entered the final sequence. The bounce chamber then came to life as several beams streaked down towards the surface. Technically speaking, Magnus and his team would all be bounced up to the Ark-22 very briefly before being redeposited onto the top of Ayers Rock. However, neither ‘Jack nor Red Alert would actually see their comrades on board as it was only their atoms that would make the trip up to the ship and then be transferred back down to the planet beneath them. It was all very technical stuff and thus the mechanical engineer didn’t feel that it was necessary to explain it all to Red Alert. Just as long as everything worked according to plan, everyone’s atoms would re-materialize right where they were supposed to.

Keeping his attention focused on all of the read-outs, Wheeljack breathed a sigh of relief once the entire process had successfully completed. “Done. They made it!” All six Autobots were now on top of the Uluru rock formation alive and well. How long that would last with the Fallen not far from their current positions was anyone’s guess.

To say that Red Alert was unhappy with Ultra Magnus's response would have been a grave understatement. How did the new supreme commander expect him to do his job if he was not briefed about the situation? Honestly. Optimus would have let him know. Actually, Optimus wouldn't be executing this protocol anyway. It was heinously against everything the old Prime stood for. And to be relegated to...to....Blaster's job? No! Hideous misuse of his skill set.

Red Alert turned his attention over to Wheeljack and harrumphed in frustration. He listened as Wheeljack locked onto the Autobots and bounced them into the proverbial eye of the storm. When the confirmation came that all the Autobots had made it, Red Alert nodded with a degree of relief.

“What else can we do to help them from up here?” Red asked.

Wheeljack continued to monitor communications traffic down on the planet’s surface as the battle raged on. The mechanical engineer remained on board the Ark-22 awaiting any further orders from Ultra Magnus whether it be to bounce more mechs around or to initiate the Autobot leader’s final solution option. Of course, that top secret option had to be handled up on the bridge and not down in a bounce chamber. Still, until that last resort order was given, the inventor decided it was best to remain where he was just in case a sudden evacuation was required.

Red Alert’s question about what more they could do to help those planet side brought Wheeljack out of his internal musings. The white mech looked over at his paranoid friend and smiled. “Well, Red, I need to remain here on board the Ark in order to initiate Magnus’ final solution if it becomes necessary. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t still help.” The mechanical engineer rubbed his chin guard as he considered their next steps. “From what little I could gather from the data stream on the control console, they’re now facing some kind of rock warriors and fire birds conjured up by the Fallen. Now, I have a pair of freeze guns that I invented a while back but never had the chance to test in the field. These weapons are fueled by nitrogen and shoot a concentrated beam that freezes anything on contact. They should work well against both the fire birds and the golems.”

Opening a small access panel on his left forearm, Wheeljack sent a silent signal down to his laboratory. Instead of running around the ship like a turbofox without its head attached, he’d simply wait for the weapons to come to him. Approximately one breem later, the bounce chamber door slid open and a small drone pulling a hover cart behind it entered the room. “There you are, Dex,” the mad scientist commented as he approached the levitating droid and patted it on its head. ‘Jack then glanced back over at Red Alert. “This is my personal little helper when no one else wants to risk their lives around one of my inventions. Heh. He’s a modified DX-9000 series drone. I nicknamed him Dex for short. He’s been offline for a while, but I think it’s time to wake him up again considering we’re short staffed up here.”

Wheeljack then stood to his full height and reached into the cart where the two freeze blasters were situated. “Good, they’re here!” The inventor enthused as he lifted them out of the cart and placed them onto a nearby table. “That’s all for now, Dex. You can return to my lab and power back down until I need you again.” With a few more beeps, the drone exited the room, pulling the empty hover cart with him. Once the doors slid shut again, Wheeljack carefully examined the two freeze weapons to make sure everything was in order. “Good, good. Everything looks functional. Nitrogen levels are at 100%. Good. Now, let’s get them down planet side to give our mechs a little help.”

Taking one in each hand, Wheeljack placed the two freeze blasters onto the primary bounce pad before returning to the control console. Once he had located the appropriate signals, the scientist opened a comm line down to Ayers Rock:

>>”Ultra Magnus, Prowl, I’m sending down a pair of freeze blasters, one to each of you. They run on nitrogen and should freeze anything on contact. They should work against both the golems and the fire birds. Use them carefully, though. They’ve not been field tested yet. I'm sending them now.”<<

With a push of the switch, the pair of freeze weapons disappeared in a brilliant flash of light. “There, let’s hope that gives them some advantage down there. It’s not much, but at least it’s better than nothing.” Wheeljack glanced over at Red Alert, a look of worry clearly etched on his faceplate.

“Better than nothing?” Tracer intoned as she slipped through the closing Bounce Chamber doors. She caught only the last bit of Wheeljack’s statement to Red and she wasn’t too happy with the engineer’s dour tone.

She hadn’t followed the two mechs right away as getting to Jack’s replicator was more important – to her at least - than getting in the middle of one of Red’s little tirades. Instead Tracer stayed behind so she could take one more dose of the synthetic Syk.

The scout was discouraged that the earlier shot of the booster wore off twice as fast as the real thing. She had almost been tempted to just take the last vial she and Smokescreen had taken from Oil Slick in order to find some relief, but where would that leave her? Sated but without anymore Syk that’s where. She had to make-due with the synthetic version.

So, she followed along when Dex left the lab. And here she stood…Jack and Red positioned at the bounce pad’s terminal.

Tracer slowly made her way to the two stopping beside Wheeljack. She reached out and gripped the mech’s upper arm…her hand closing on it like a vise. Syk, real or otherwise, enhanced the strength of its user making them twice as strong as they usually were - Smokescreen could attest to this as he’d seen it during their excursion to Mongolia. The user’s speed and senses were heightened as well.

“What’s going on down there, Jack? Are they okay? Is Smokescreen alright?” She tried to keep her vocalizer steady, composed but it was evident that the scout was worried.

Wheeljack’s attention was drawn away from the bounce controls at the sound of Tracer entering the room. She appeared no worse for wear to the untrained optic, but 'Jack could tell that her condition, even with the synthetic Syk, was taking a toll on her body. Hopefully, Red Alert would not also take notice and remain focused on what the mechanical engineer was doing as well as the goings on down on the planet’s surface. While ‘Jack was pleased that Tracer was now present to help with Red, deep down he’d rather she had remained safely in his lab where no one else could see her, especially a paranoid security director. However, she was here now so it was wise to make the best of it.

It didn’t take long for Tracer to make her way over to him, reaching out and grabbing Wheeljack’s arm with an increased strength that the scientist attributed to the drug she was still high on. The white mech had known what one of her first questions would be the moment he saw her step foot into the bounce chamber. Therefore, the Autobot inventor was ready with a response.

“Well, Tracer, I’ve been monitoring the comm traffic that’s not encrypted along with everyone’s signals and from what I can ascertain the heralds have all been neutralized,” Wheeljack began with some good news before delving into the not-so-good. “Unfortunately, the Fallen has conjured up numerous rock golems and fire birds in response to the loss of his heralds and no one has been able to get past his shield yet. I did send down a pair of freeze guns to help them out, but I’m afraid there have been many casualties.”

The scientist then paused for a moment to consider how to word the next part of his statement. “Smokescreen is okay. I’m still receiving his signal, although it’s a bit weak, but that could be from all the distortion down there with the fiery tornados and such. Most of the signals aren’t coming in clearly. There is one thing, though, he’s....well, his signal’s coming from the combat care unit on board the Longevity. I don’t know any specifics, but it’s possible that he’s somehow injured.” Wheeljack stopped for a moment and placed a steady, reassuring hand onto the worried femme’s shoulder. “Or he could be there helping out with the injured. It’s hard to tell from up here. Drag Strip was taken out, so that’s good. I’m sure Smokey’ll be fine, so I wouldn’t worry. He’s tougher than he looks you know.”

Communique From Guardian to Bridge

"...22 come in. Ark 22 this is Guardian, this is Ironfist currently in command. Wheeljack, I am going under the assumption that you have been forced into the same situation that I have been consigned to accept. But you are definitely in a particularly unique and advantageous position. I have completed replacement of the Guardian's damaged generator and we are currently picking up pieces here as a result from the power surges. Some of those systems damaged is our primary sensor array. We are trying condensation algorithms to get what we can but, so far what we're getting makes little sense."

The vestige of Ironfist shrinks to fill half the screen. The other half of the screen was dedicated to the visual sensor data that was currently being recorded by the Guardian's wounded sensor grid. The recording was grainy and blurred, though figures could be made out. The red, white and blue form was visible as it stood ready for further conflict. Above the image a giant green form tore through the flaming tumult.

"Can't tell for certain whats going on, though the theories are pretty rangy over here. Wheeljack, can you tap the 22's sensors for a clearer picture."

Wheeljack’s attention was drawn away from Tracer as he received a communique from Ironfist who was stationed over on the Guardian. It was primarily an update on the condition of the Protectobot frigate followed by a request for clarification on a sensor reading that their damaged array had managed to pick up from the surface. Unfortunately, the mad scientist could not immediately see the image in question.

“He must think I’m on the bridge,” Wheeljack muttered aloud to himself as he took his hand off of Tracer’s shoulder and began running his actuators across the access terminal in front of him, rerouting the image of both Ironfist and the blurred recording from the bridge down to the bounce chamber. Everything quickly appeared on the display screen in front of him, the weapons expert on one side and the unclear image on the other. “Well, well, what have we here?”

The mechanical engineer then dove deep into the computer system and accessed the Ark-22’s own sensor array, redirecting the data stream to the bounce control panel and monitor. It was not the most efficient means of retrieving the necessary information, but Wheeljack was not currently on the bridge where the task would have been much easier and therefore he had to go the long way around. “There you are!” The mad scientist exclaimed, noting that the interference from the storm had gone down considerably. In fact, the sand storm, itself had now disappeared. “Okay, I see a great big green...wait...are those the Constructicons?!” Upon closer inspection on the display screen, ‘Jack was able to ascertain within a ninety-five percent certainty that what he was looking at was a gestalt of Scrapper and his men. “Dear Primus!”

The inventor then opened a comm line back to the Guardian with his findings:

>>”Ironfist, come in, this is Wheeljack. I’m currently in the bounce chamber over here. I’m manning the controls for Commander Magnus and Prowl, helping them bounce past the Fallen’s various obstacles down there. I was able to reroute everything you sent me from the bridge down to my location as well as the visual data from the 22’s sensor array. The sand storm around Ayers Rock seems to have suddenly subsided. Therefore, I was able to get a clearer picture of what you are talking about. I’m sending the refined image to you now. From what I can tell it appears to be the Constructicons combined into one giant gestalt and it looks to be attacking the Fallen. I haven’t heard of anything like this since the days of Jhiaxus and that abomination he created Monstructor. I hope this doesn’t complicate things down there more than they already are.”<<

Wheeljack then cut his comm line and glanced over at Tracer with another reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. I’m sure that big combiner will keep its focus on fighting the Fallen and nothing else.

Tracer kept her anxious gaze fixed hard on Wheeljack as she waited for the engineer to answer her question about what was happening on the surface. But more importantly if Smokescreen was alright.

“Well, Tracer, I’ve been monitoring the comm traffic that’s not encrypted along with everyone’s signals and from what I can ascertain the heralds have all been neutralized,"

That bit of news was good. Tracer loosened her grip slightly but kept her hands wrapped around ‘Jack’s arm.

“Unfortunately, the Fallen has conjured up numerous rock golems and fire birds in response to the loss of his heralds and no one has been able to get past his shield yet. I did send down a pair of freeze guns to help them out, but I’m afraid there have been many casualties."

How could they possibly defeat something with that kind of power? Rock Golems. Fire birds…what next a giant transforming planet?

Tracer shook her head gently as she tried to banish the thought from her mind. Instead of focusing on the what-ifs she focused on seeing Smokescreen safe and in one piece.

I don’t know any specifics, but it’s possible that he’s somehow injured."

And there it was. But the exact reason for the diversionary tactician’s presence in the Combat Casualty Care unit was unknown; at least she knew he was still alive.

“Or he could be there helping out with the injured. It’s hard to tell from up here. Drag Strip was taken out, so that’s good. I’m sure Smokey’ll be fine, so I wouldn’t worry. He’s tougher than he looks you know."

Tracer was concerned but knowing that his signal was located and that they could still pick up his signal. Somewhat at ease Tracer let out a low sigh. “Thank Primus he’s alright,” she breathed.

A small smile forced its way to Tracer’s visage as she looked back at Wheeljack’s reassuring expression.

She hadn’t noticed the engineer’s attention pull away from her until he muttered something about not being on the bridge. She flashed him a questioning glance but didn’t expect an explanation as ‘Jack removed his hands from her shoulders and turned to the terminal in front of him.

While Wheeljack went to work Tracer stepped back out of his way and stopped beside Red Alert. There some mention of a huge transformer…a combiner in the midst of the battle. The scout grew worried. Was this thing on their side or was it out to crush everything and everyone in its path. Primus she hated unknowns!

“Don’t worry. I’m sure that big combiner will keep its focus on fighting the Fallen and nothing else.”

The blue and white femme gave ‘Jack an uncertain look before she took a step forward. As soon as she was in front of the engineer she leaned in close and whispered. “I need to get down there, Wheeljack. I’m not going to wait for that demigod to work his way up here to finish the rest of us off.” She locked her optics with the white mech’s. “I need to make sure he’s alright. And maybe, just maybe I can help out in some way.”

Tracer’s words hit Wheeljack like a brick wall. Of course, she wanted to go down there to make sure Smokescreen was all right. He should’ve expected this response from her. Regardless of the inventor’s assurances, the troubled femme still worried about the diversion expert more than even herself. She would literally do anything for him and vice versa. That had already been well established. Naturally, ‘Jack wanted to immediately protest her request, or was it a demand? It didn't matter. He wanted to tell her that it was not a good idea to go anywhere near the Fallen in her condition, especially if Oil Slick was somewhere on the surface. Unfortunately, he could not say those things. Red Alert was standing right there, after all, and any argument between him and the blue scout would arouse the security director's suspicion, which would then open them up to all sorts of questions they just couldn't answer.

Therefore, Wheeljack had no real choice but to reluctantly agree to her need to go down planet side. “I understand, Tracer,” the mechanical engineer replied with a nod. “I would expect nothing less when it comes to Smokescreen. Still, you need to be very careful when you get down there. Many capable warriors have already suffered severe damage or ended up in stasis because of that fiery beast on top of that mountain. His shield is unbreakable and his powers seemingly limitless. Stay with Smokey in the shuttle. I’m sure there will be plenty for you to help out with in regards to the wounded. Okay?”

Wheeljack then returned his attention to the bounce controls and entered the coordinates that would place Tracer right where she needed to be. “All right, the bounce pad is set to put you down right next to the entrance ramp of the Longevity. Just hit that red button and hop onto the pad. Once you are on the ground, head right inside the shuttle. Got it?”

Before the engineer could get a response out of the drug-addicted femme, he received a transmission from Prowl down on the surface. Apparently, the Fallen’s dark spark is inside Hot Rod’s body, feeding off of the cavalier like a leech. This actually made a lot of sense since a Transformer’s spark was essentially his lifeforce or spirit and thus that would be the only real way for a dead mech to possess the living. Still, Wheeljack had never before heard of a disembodied spark having the ability to exist on its own without some kind of life support. Of course, the Fallen was no ordinary mechanoid and had abilities beyond what anyone could fathom.

Prowl’s follow-up request hit ‘Jack harder than Tracer’s own plea. The black and white needed something to extract the Fallen’s spark from Hot Rod’s deformed and fiery body. The mad scientist shuddered at the thought of using that particular invention, one he had designed and built vorns ago but was never given the go-ahead to mass produce. It was determined by the higher-ups to be far too dangerous, especially if it fell into the wrong hands. Thus, it was locked away deep within Wheeljack’s lab, the only one with access to it was the inventor, himself.

Opening a private comm line back to the surface, Wheeljack attempted to keep his tone cordial:

>>”You known damned well, Prowl, that I have exactly what you need! It was you that wanted me to build it in the first place!”<< Wheeljack paused for a moment, realizing that his tone had been anything but cordial. >>”I will retrieve the spark extractor and bring it down ASAP. It might take me a few breems as it needs to be properly calibrated first. After all, it’s been locked away for a very long time. I’m not even sure it’ll still work. Just give me some time. I shouldn't be too long.”<<

Cutting his comm line, Wheeljack turned to Tracer and Red Alert. “I’ve received new orders from Prowl. I need to get down to my lab immediately to retrieve a weapon that will hopefully end all of this and save Hot Rod’s life in the process. I would have Dex get it, but only I can access it. Tracer, you go ahead down to the shuttle. Like I said, the coordinates are set. Just push the button and take your place on the pad. Red, you can come with me if you like or stay here. Whatever you want, but I need to move quickly. Time is of the essence.”

Not waiting for a further response from either of them, Wheeljack turned and hurried out of the bounce chamber, heading directly for his lab.

Wheeljack’s Lab

One breem later, the doors parted down the center and Wheeljack entered his laboratory, rushing by Dex who was sitting idly off in one corner. Walking briskly to the very back of the room, the mad scientist reached the primary storage closet and quickly entered the security codes. As that door opened, the inventor slipped inside and made his way to the shelves along the righthand side. There were numerous gadgets and whatnot scattered across the metal racks, but the white mech was only concerned with one in particular.

“Ah, there you are,” Wheeljack exclaimed in a low tone, bending down to the lowest shelf and grabbing ahold of a long, rectangular black case. Standing back up to his full height, the engineer carried the case out into the lab proper and placed it onto one of his various workbenches. Taking a deep intake of air, the white mech typed a series of numbers into a small keypad on top of the metallic box. Once that was successfully entered, a few clicks could be heard before a panel slid open on the side of the case, revealing a keyhole. Wheeljack then retrieved the corresponding key from his hip compartment and placed it into the slot.

“Well, here goes,” the inventor muttered nervously as he then turned the key, causing another series of clicks before the case popped open around the seams. Letting out another sigh, Wheeljack lifted the top up and back to reveal the spark extractor sitting snugly inside. It was about the size and length of a standard hand-held cannon, something a Wrecker would carry. At the back just behind the handle was a transparent section where the ripped out spark would ultimately be deposited. At the front end of the extractor were a series of four mandibles across from one another that acted like a claw to secure the tip of the weapon’s wide barrel against a mech’s chest plate. It was similar to any number of torture devices that could be found in a Decepticon interrogator’s arsenal, except this was an Autobot invention. Wheeljack’s invention.

“I was hoping I would never have to see you again, my dangerous friend,” the engineer said to the inanimate object as he carefully lifted the extractor out of the case and placed it down onto the hardtop of the workbench. Moving the empty case out of the way, Wheeljack focused all of his attention on the spark extractor, grabbing a set of tools before going to work on cleaning and recalibrating the weapon for use against the Fallen.

Red Alert frowned at Tracer's request. It was dangerous down below and was only likely to get moreso as time went on. The security officer opened his mouth to protest when Wheeljack cut him off and actually allowed the femme to bounce down to the planet's surface. Red Alert buttoned up, shooting Wheeljack a nasty sidelong look but saying nothing.

Wheeljack went about setting up the bounce for Tracer. Red Alert took the time to sniff the air a few times. There had been a scent that had been nagging at him for a while now. It was sort of familiar in its way. But suddenly, Wheeljack perked up as he received some kind of communication from those down on the surface.

Time is of the essence."

Without question, Red Alert followed hastily behind Wheeljack.

Wheeljack's Lab

“I was hoping I would never have to see you again, my dangerous friend," the engineer said to the inanimate object as he carefully lifted the extractor out of the case and placed it down onto the hardtop of the workbench.

Wheeljack...is that...?” Red Alert asked as he looked over the mad scientist's shoulder at the device. It did not look Autobot in design. No something like that looked like it belonged in the arsenal of some demented Decepticon interrogator. What had this war done? Red Alert's optics narrowed as he sniffed the air again. There was that smell. Stronger now. And he...he knew what it reminded him of.

His immediate instinct was to confront Wheeljack about it, but whatever the scientist was working on so frantically had to be important to saving all their lives. Now was not the time. And he didn't smell it on Jack. No...the scent was coming from elsewhere in the lab. And Tracer was covered in it.

Tracer flashed Wheeljack another pleading look. She had to…no needed to…see if Smokescreen was okay. She hadn’t heard from him and things, from what she understood, were getting even more dire.

“I understand, Tracer,"

Tracer felt slightly more at ease knowing that the mechanical engineer knew, and understood, how strongly she felt about being with Smokescreen. After all Wheeljack, along with Axle, had helped the both of them during some hard times.

Okay?"

A small smile crept onto the scout’s face as she gave a slight nod of agreement. She’s head right to the Combat Casualty Unit on the Longevity, find Smokescreen, make sure he’s doing alright, and then see if there’s anything she can do to help out.

“All right, the bounce pad is set to put you down right next to the entrance ramp of the Longevity. Just hit that red button and hop onto the pad. Once you are on the ground, head right inside the shuttle. Got it?"

Again Tracer nodded in agreement. “I got it.” She said quietly. The blue and white scout was ready to thank the engineer when she was quickly cut off.

Time is of the essence."

“Okay. Be careful when you get down there, Jack. You’re too great an asset to lose.” Tracer smiled at the mech before she trotted off towards the bounce pad. She made quick stop at the control panel and hit the button that had been pointed out to her earlier. She then made her way onto the center of the pad and waited to be whisked away to the planet below.

Right before she was enrobed in that brilliant light Tracer caught sight of Red Alert sniffing the air. She swallowed hard as her thoughts wandered back to the replicator and the synthetic Syk. Hopefully the security officer wouldn’t catch on to what was really happening.

Tracer broke optic contact refocusing her attention the floor of the bounce pad. Seconds later she was somewhere else.

Wheeljack’s Lab

The spark extractor was a very dangerous tool even in its current form. Wheeljack knew this fact all too well. After all, he had designed and built the cursed thing at the behest of Prowl, himself. The military strategist was not known for subtlety. Over a vorn ago, he had requested a device that could rip out a Decepticon’s spark and do so en mass if necessary. The original “spark bomb” design was something that was never actually constructed. It would have been even more dangerous than what the inventor was currently prepping.

The “spark bomb” was an early concept for the extractor that would see it placed or dropped into the middle of a battlefield where it would then activate and suck out the sparks from the chest cavities of all mechs within range. Preferably it would be used only on Decepticons, but Autobot High Command felt that it was far too dangerous and risky as any Autobots that were too close or taken prisoner nearby could lose their own sparks, as well. Prowl, of course, felt that it was worth the risk if one could take down an entire ‘Con army in mere astroseconds. Still, the black and white had been overruled, but he did not give up on the idea entirely. Instead, he simply requested that Wheeljack change the design into something a bit “safer”.

The mechanical engineer reluctantly obliged and created something that was more akin to a hand-held cannon that could only rip out one spark at a time from very close range. A prototype was eventually built and even tested on a volunteer in order to show the effectiveness of the device. Said volunteer’s spark was then reinserted into his body afterwards and Prowl was very happy with the results, declaring that the tide of the war was about to change in the Autobots’ favor.

However, the weapon was never utilized in battle as the entire idea of a spark extractor was ultimately rejected. The "safer" version was still deemed to be too dangerous a weapon for anyone to possess let alone yield. If it happened to fall into Decepticon hands they would almost certainly use it against the Autobots and that was a risk no one in high command was willing to take. Prowl, naturally, was the one exception. The extractor was subsequently locked away deep within Wheeljack’s lab never to be seen again.

Until now.

Unfortunately, it took a fiery demigod to bring the spark extractor out of exile. Wheeljack had left the weapon in such a state that even if someone had been able to get past the security codes and the complex locking mechanism they would still not be able to activate the device. Only the mechanical engineer knew what needed to be done to it to make the extractor ready for use. His focus on the cannon-like weapon was intense as he poked his tools around inside its guts, making the appropriate connections and internal adjustments where needed before then adding the plasma fuel rod that would power the device. Once the fuel assembly was complete, the mad scientist replaced the access panel on the side of the extractor and turned his attention back to his toolkit.

The sound of his door opening caused Wheeljack no concern. He did not alter his present course of action nor did he even glance over to see who it was that had entered his lab. It had to be Red Alert as Tracer would’ve already headed down planet side to see how Smokescreen was doing. The security chief was the only other mech that would know where to find him or have any business being in the inventor’s domain. The sound of the paranoid Autobot’s voice soon confirmed that very fact.

“Yes, Red, it’s a spark extractor,” Wheeljack replied to Red Alert’s query as he grabbed a miniature wrench and began tightening each of the four claw-like mandibles that were situated around the barrel of the weapon. “Prowl requested it in order to rip out the Fallen’s spark from Hot Rod’s body. I had hoped I would never see this weapon again, but unfortunately we are in a fight against the extinction of our race. Therefore, extreme measures are necessary if we are to survive this encounter with a demigod.”

Finishing the last adjustment, Wheeljack placed the small wrench back into his toolkit and ran one final diagnostic scan on the extractor. “I just hope the ‘Cons don’t react too adversely once they see that we have such a thing. But we really have no choice I’m afraid, and I’m under orders.” Once the diagnostic results came back satisfactory, the white mech stood from his seat and picked up the spark extractor in both hands. He checked to make sure that the safety was on and secured before using the attached strap to carefully sling the device over his right shoulder.

“All right, Red, I’m all set. Now let’s get back down to the bounce chamber. Time’s wasting and our comrades need us,” Wheeljack said with a confident nod before he turned and quickly exited his lab. In all actuality, the mechanical engineer’s confidence in this idea was sorely lacking. He had no idea if the extractor still functioned after all this time, or if it would have the desired affect on a demigod. Of course, they would soon find out one way or another.

“Yes, Red, it’s a spark extractor," Wheeljack replied to Red Alert’s query as he grabbed a miniature wrench and began tightening each of the four claw-like mandibles that were situated around the barrel of the weapon. “Prowl requested it in order to rip out the Fallen’s spark from Hot Rod’s body. I had hoped I would never see this weapon again, but unfortunately we are in a fight against the extinction of our race. Therefore, extreme measures are necessary if we are to survive this encounter with a demigod."

“Prowl...” Red Alert grumbled. That black and white strategist could send Red into a conniption with a mere flick of his hand if he wanted to – and even if he didn't. In fact, it seemed as though none of the Autobot High Command really bothered to keep him in the loop now that he thought about it. Was it some kind of conspiracy to drive the security officer to insanity? Red peered over the mad scientist's shoulder anxiously.

“I just hope the ‘Cons don’t react too adversely once they see that we have such a thing. But we really have no choice I’m afraid, and I’m under orders."

“Try not to let Shockwave see it at least. If the Decepticons mass produced these, we all would be in some trouble,” Red commented nervously as he watched Wheeljack finish up the last of the adjustments to the spark extractor and toss it over his shoulder.

“All right, Red, I’m all set. Now let’s get back down to the bounce chamber. Time’s wasting and our comrades need us.”

Wheeljack sounded confident. That was nice at least. Red's circuits were positively frayed. But without a moment's hesitation, Red followed on Wheeljack's heels out of the lab.

Prowl was annoying. No mech would ever argue with that assertion. In fact, most would whole heartedly agree with that glaring fact, Wheeljack included. As the mechanical engineer traversed the numerous, maze-like corridors of the Ark-22, all he could hear was the voice of the military strategist ringing through his comm line, demanding that he get his aft plates down planet side with the spark extractor ASAP. The Autobot inventor simply rolled his optics and ignored the ranting of the black and white, sending only a non-verbal response. ‘Jack was going as fast as he could. No amount of complaining and badgering would get him to move any faster.

Entering the bounce chamber with the extractor still secured over one shoulder, Wheeljack quickly approached the control panel and punched in the coordinates for the summit of Ayers Rock. He then glanced over at Red Alert, whom he assumed had been right behind him. “You’re more than welcome to join me, Red,” the mad scientist said to his paranoid comrade. “Unless you’d rather remain up here and man the bounce controls. You’re call.”

Wasting no more time, Wheeljack set the timer on the panel before hurrying over to take his place on the bounce pad. Once he was in position, the engineer gave the security director a brief smile as the astroseconds ticked away. If Red Alert wanted to go along, he’d have to get moving now. Otherwise, he’d have to take the next bounce beam down. Wheeljack's face shield then slid over his mouth just as a brilliant light filled the chamber and whisked him away, leaving nothing but empty space behind.

Red Alert was shaking. In the last moment, he had been seized by a fit of paranoia and doubt. He couldn't just leave the Ark unattended. And...and...he couldn't trust Wheeljack. Wheeljack could be leading him into a trap. He just. It was better to stay. Someone to man the bounce controls. Yeah.

The security officer looked at his actuators. He couldn't stop them from shaking even if he balled them up into fists and thrust them against his chassis. This crippling doubt of his own friends and comrades. It was a problem that had always plagued him. He felt so alone even when surrounded by the others. Like being in a crowd of strangers and enemies. And now he was alone.

Silverbolt's sudden transmission made the security officer jump. Allowing his spark a moment to recover, he punched in the coordinates reluctantly. What promise did he have that this wasn't some Fallen trick? He had to be prepared...What exactly was he going to do against a platoon of Fallen mind controlled goons? Ah...ah...act the part! Of course! At least until he could be sure who was and who wasn't brainwashed by the Fallen.

With that plan in mind, Red Alert initiated the bounce procedures and the room was filled with a bright light. When it cleared, Red Alert's optics locked onto a singular figure. His shoulder mounted rocket launched primed for launch and he brought up his particle beam rifle, pointing it at the figure on Springer's shoulder.

“S-Springer! Drop the F-Fallen at once! Failure to c-comply will be met with...lethal force!” Red Alert shouted at the Wrecker.

Arcee was just recovering from the disorientation of the bounce when Red Alert began shouting at the lot of them. Her optics refocused onto a Red Alert with weapons primed at Hot Rod! What?! The pink warrior moved to situate herself between the hostile security officer and the helpless Hot Rod when said something that made her freeze.

“D-don't move! Nobody move! If you move, I'll fire!”

Arcee stared disbelievingly at Red Alert before glancing over to Springer. She hadn't really expected to enter another combat zone upon returning to the Ark 22.

“S-Springer! Drop the F-Fallen at once! Failure to c-comply will be met with...lethal force!"

“D-don't move! Nobody move! If you move, I'll fire!"

Springer's optics flickered as he materialized back aboard the 22, only to meet face-to-face with a very fidgety Red Alert. The security officer had both of his weapons fixated on the unconscious Hot Rod that was draped over the triplechanger's shoulder. And here the former wrecker was hoping for some form of quiet upon their return.

"Easy there, Red," Springer began, his voice trying to remain as calm as to not send the head of security into another level of panic or paranoia. "Hot Rod here is Hot Rod. Wheeljack came down, as you're probably well aware of that, and used his spark extractor to yank the Fallen from him."

"It's true, Magnus has the extracted spark down on Earth with him. He and Razorclaw are sorting out how to dispose of it." Silverbolt added on as he stepped up from behind Springer and Arcee to help clarify and reiterate the wrecker's case. Springer held back the urge to open his vocalizer on the issue, knowing full well what the Decepticons are doing to enforce their departure is a safe one. Though it may not have been the right choice of words to address, Silverbolt was smart enough to not reveal too much and cause Red Alert's paranoia to escalate any further.

"Now, I know you're worried about if it's still the same Hot Rod we all know and love, and if there's a chance the Fallen is still within him. You have every right to fear that. Hell, I'm still not one-hundred percent convinced either! But we won't know until we can get him to a med bay, do a few scans, and hope for the best. We'll put him in the highest level of restraints and keep a constant optic on him the entire time, just until the doc' says he's in the clear."

The green and gold mech then slowly reached for his sheathed sword with his free hand, drawing the blade by grabbing part of the blade so it lost most of its functionality should Red Alert feel he was being drawn upon.

"As a sign that you'll have my word on it, I will relinquish my sword to you until he's passed as Fallen-free."

Sandstorm wouldn't admit it out loud, but he was glad that battle against the Fallen was over. There was just...just...too many unknowns with an opponent like that. Too much slag they could pull out of their aft, and Primus knows the Fallen pulled everything out he could reach for. Getting back to an Autobot ship would at least allow for some R&R--reload and refuel.

Except, not quite...

Sandstorm's jaw dropped slightly when he was what really awaited them was another Autobot with their weapon drawn. Sandstorm had drawn his just as fast, but Springer quickly started to try and get a word in edgewise and calm the paranoid security director down.

Good fraggin' luck.

Sandstorm listened as Springer laid the whole situation out in pretty clear terms. No, it wasn't ideal, but it's not they like they had just drug the Terrorcons on board. Awake. Man, Sandstorm would like to tangle with those slaggers again.

"Yeah, just ease up there, Red. What Springer says. It's not ideal but what can ya do? We all almost got fragged by this sucker down there. But we're standing. He's not. I, for one, would love to keep it that way and make sure Roddy's functional again. Sound good?"

Red Alert’s optics riveted onto the green and yellow triplechanger. His hands shook. Fingers trembling. He couldn’t…how did could know this wasn’t a ruse? Yet…he couldn’t just…Fire on them all needlessly. Yes. Yes. Only the Fallen had to die. Then his friends would be free.

"It's true, Magnus has the extracted spark down on Earth with him. He and Razorclaw are sorting out how to dispose of it." Silverbolt. Red Alert glanced hastily at the Aerialbot commander before hastily glancing back to Springer, trying to divide his focus everywhere. He couldn’t be taken by surprise. He was the last line of defense for those left untouched by the Fallen’s mental manipulations.

"Now, I know you're worried about if it's still the same Hot Rod we all know and love, and if there's a chance the Fallen is still within him. You have every right to fear that. Red Alert flinched as Springer went for his sword, but the Wrecker drew it by the blade. The paranoia stricken security officer watched with wide optics.

"As a sign that you'll have my word on it, I will relinquish my sword to you until he's passed as Fallen-free."

Sandstorm
pitched in. "Yeah, just ease up there, Red. What Springer says. It's not ideal but what can ya do? We all almost got fragged by this sucker down there. But we're standing. He's not. I, for one, would love to keep it that way and make sure Roddy's functional again. Sound good?"

“I-I-If you really m-meant what you s-s-said, you w-would know that I CAN’T TAKE THAT CHANCE!” Red Alert pointed his rocket launchers at Hot Rod, his spark seizing up with what he was about to do. “I’m sorry…” Red pulled the trigger. And a volley of rockets shot toward the group of Autobots on the bounce pad.

Arcee’s optics widened as she realized what was about to happen. Hastily, she tried tackling the Hot Rod toting Springer out of the way as the first rocket connected with her leg.

“AAAAAGHHHHHH!”

there was the rushing of sounds, the feeling of dislocation, darkness more rushing as the sounds became more focused. Raised voices, shouting the voices where becoming alot clearer that sounded like Springer trying to talk someone down. Another voice this one was more assertive ah! Silverbolt, another voice this one was instantly recognisable Sandstorm. But who where they trying to talk down the darkness was getting unbearable but the headache wasn't worth him reactivating optic's.

Another voice unsure completely on edge undeniably Red Alert, Broadside took the risk of activating his optics he found Springer holding Hot Rod, sandstorm and Silverbolt not too far away. With a groan he rose to his feet just as Red Alert started firing "Oh you gotta be kidding Red I just woke up from being a living lightening rod and your now shooting at me. AND I'VE GOT A MASSIVE HEADACHE"

Broadside lumbered forward to try and stop the paranoid mech from firing a second volley by swatting him with the flat of his axe.

The frenzied Red Alert didn’t have time to note if he had hit his intended target or not. Broadside was coming right at him, swinging that axe of his like a madman! In a vehement leap to the side, Red Alert barely avoided getting thwacked with the axe. So it was true! Broadside had just tried to kill him! Though why would they still play the game of talking to him like his comrades would? He…he would not be fooled! Too risky. Had to take the chance.

Red Alert fixed his rocket launcher on Broadside when he remembered who his target ought to be. The Fallen. Hot Rod. Turning his back to Broadside, Red craned his head high into the air to try and locate Hot Rod’s body. If he could just destroy Hot Rod’s body…then…then…all of his friends would go back to normal! Right…? Yes. Of course they would. They had to! Or else…Red didn’t know what he’d do…

Red's not gonna listen to reason. He's just not gonna. Prime kept him at least somewhat rational, but he's just lost it now, man. We gotta-

But Sandstorm's train of thought was interrupted by the telltale sound of a high-powered weapon discharge. Rockets to be exact. Sandstorm barely had time to dive out of the way as Broadside barreled forward. Then chaos. Arcee screaming. Smoke. What the frag?! They just got out of a battle...
