The Pretender Shells were nothing more than suits of armor, if the Marvel comics can attest. Disguise wasn't that much of a concern, except for in their debut, where human looked down upon giant robots, but were apparently perfectly fine with other, more frightening creatures of similar size. Skullgrin even landed a Hollywood movie role. Go figure.
One funny story in the comics is that the Autobot Pretenders landed on a planet with giant humanoid females, and wanted the Pretenders to ehm...
