Court Rules to Suspend Infusions for Voice Icon Casey Kasem

PostPosted: Wed Jun 11, 2014 10:32 pm
by ScoutBumblebee
A judge in Los Angeles, CA has ruled to allow Casey Kasem's daughter, Karri Kasem, the authority to suspend infusions of water, food, and medications for her ailing father. In a reversal of the court's previous decision, the judge ruled in accordance with a power of attorney statement which was signed by Kasem in 2007, declaring that he did not want to be kept alive,"any form of life sustaining procedures, including nutrition and hydration" if it "would result in a mere biological existence, devoid of cognitive function, with no reasonable hope of normal functioning."

The judge's decision was based on the recommendations of Kasem's doctor and reviews of his medical records, which indicate that the infusions are not helpful to Kasem's continued health and may be doing him harm. While originally diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, Kasem's diagnosis was later changed to Lewy body dementia, which is incurable and can lead to progressive dementia, fluctuating cognition, hallucinations, and a variety of other symptoms.

While we all remember Casey Kasem in part for voicing Teletraan I, Cliffjumper, and Bluestreak in the G1 series, he was perhaps most famous for his hosting of America's Top 40 from July 1970 to August 1988, and again from March 1998 to January 2004. In addition, Kasem was the voice of Shaggy in many iterations of Scooby Doo. He also did voice work in many other movies and TV shows, including Ghostbusters, Hawaii Five-O, Sesame Street, Superfriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show.

Well, that's a shame, in that we'll all miss hearing his talents, but if those are his wishes, and if he is a soul trapped in a withering body, then god bless and god speed, and thank you for making childhoods a little brighter Mr. Kasem.

Sad that his involvement in Transformers ended on such a sour note, but he'll always live on in his many roles

Had no idea he was ill. Very sad news. I watched Ghostbusters on Sunday and noticed his short cameo. A distinctive voice, no other Shaggy seems quite right.

Looks like he's on his last limb, guys. Times have been pretty rough for him lately what with his going missing for a while and his wife and daughter fighting each other over the proper care for him, worsening his condition further. I don't think he'll make it that much longer. :-s

The world will be a little darker with the passing of this man.

He truly is an icon of my childhood.

Sad news, really going to miss his voice.

I do want to point out, though, speaking as someone who has been working exclusively with dementia patients for the past 17+ years, he isn't dying from his dementia, it doesn't really matter what for he has. It's the complications that result from the dementia like stroke, heart attack, organ failure, starvation, dehydration, and accidents that kill a person with dementia. In Kasem's case he's dying from a rampant infection caused by bed sores he received recently in the hospital. He'd be in better condition today if he was in a nursing home where he belonged rather than being moved from hospital to hospital while his family argues over who loves him more. It's a sad story that I've encountered far too many times.

DJ and Voice Actor Casey Kasem Dies at 82

PostPosted: Sun Jun 15, 2014 1:03 pm
by Mindmaster
Earlier this week, we reported that the courts have suspended the use of life-support for elderly voice actor and DJ Casey Kasem, who is suffering from Lewy body disease. We here at Seibertron.com regret to inform the public that Mr. Kasem has passed away earlier today at the age of 82.

During his career as a voice actor, Mr. Kasem is most famously known for lending his voice as Shaggy in Scooby Doo. As for his roles in The Transformers, Mr. Kasem voiced Cliffjumper, Bluestreak, Doctor Arkeville, Teletraan I, and the Dread slaves from the episode "Chaos".

We here at Seibertron.com offer our most sincere condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Kasem.

Good, at least he's not in pain anymore and died with at least a bit of his dignity intact.

He was awesome, and did not deserve to degenerate like this, damn dementia eats your very being until all that is left of you is a shriveled up husk of a body that's artificially kept running long after you've left it.

RIP Shaggy.

Such a terrible thing to see anyone suffer through a debilitating illness like that. I will always remember him as Bluestreak, Cliffjumper, Shaggy, and the friendly voice on the radio spinning the countdown of hits every week. Growing up in the 80s and hearing his voice on the radio or as a voice actor in a different show was like running into a familiar friend. I think the last thing I remember hearing him on was Mystery Incorporated as the voice of Shaggy's father just a few years ago.
