Catherine...Love is Over

Atlus has their new puzzle/horror/datingsim game "Catherine" coming out at the end of July and since the pre-orders went up recently it seemed like a good time to start a thread on this.

Now, for those with Japanese PSN accounts on their system, there is a Demo you can download (if PSN were up).

But basically, the game is about a guy (Vincent) who is involved with a woman named Katherine, whom he knocks up. She's all about getting serious with him.

Enter other girl, Catherine, who is just out for the sport of picking up Vincent. Vincent cheats on Katherine with Catherine and so begins the nightmares.

Gameplay alternates between dating sim style choice games and a difficult puzzle platformer in a nightmare realm where sheep-men try to kill you and a giant woman(monster) with a fork tries to stab you.

Oh yea...there's some murders or something as well.

I don't know about you all, but this is right along the lines of the kind of game I feel like we desperately need more of. Something in that stuff I typed had to make you go...WTF? at least once.

Well, here's a luz and a half:

ESRB wrote: This is a puzzle adventure game in which players assume the role of Vincent, a man with relationship issues that are manifested in his dreams. The game transitions between animated cutscenes and puzzle stages (i.e., nightmares); in the nightmare world, players must help Vincent ascend crumbling towers by pushing, pulling, and climbing blocks to reach an exit. If players make the wrong move, they can be killed by spike traps and giant boss creatures (e.g., a demon bride, a chainsaw-wielding baby); death scenes are accompanied by exaggerated splashes of blood as Vincent is stabbed, crushed, shot, or bitten.

During one cutscene, a character is stabbed in the stomach with a knife; a large pool of blood quickly forms under her body. In order to move faster in the puzzles stages, players can order Vincent alcoholic beverages (e.g., mixed cocktails, beer, sake, whiskey); after three drinks, he begins to stumble around when moving. These sequences are accompanied by voice-over narration: “It’s said that chugging alcohol isn’t good for you, but sometimes it’s necessary” and “[T]ake a big swig of cognac!” Throughout the game, sex and sexuality are frequently referenced, sometimes while two characters are in bed together (e.g., “I finally became a man! Got rid of my V-card, BOOM,” “If the one you loved confessed to a sexual habit that you found absolutely unacceptable, what would you do?” and “After all you’ve done to my body . . . Night after night . . .”).

One bedroom sequence pans across a man’s legs, then to his curling toes; another scene briefly depicts a woman caressing her body while making suggestive comments (e.g., “I’ve got such a hunger for these feelings . . . I know you have some hungers as well, don’t you?” ). The game also depicts the central character surrounded by topless female demons—though shadow effects obscure most details. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” can be heard in the dialogue.

Count me in, I've been waiting for this one for a while now. I'm a 360 man myself though.

I take it this is the kind of game you're going to get judged by your family for if you get caught playing it. By the way, why no love for the Wii?

Probably, but my wife is planning to play this one as well as me. Atlus games are fun for the entire (dysfunctional) family.

But seriously, she's so enamored with Persona that she's eager to see what Atlus is doing with this one.

As for why not on the Wii? I expect that it's part Nintendo's decision and part due to the disc size being a limitation. Atlus has put massive amounts of spoke dialog on their games since Persona 4. Even if the Wii disc size could incorporate it, graphics would be limited more so than they would be on the Wii already and the access time would be significant.

These kinds of games are one of the ways that the limitation of the Wii really come to light. I'm not entirely sure there would be a market for it as a Ero/Horror/Puzzle game on the Wii when I think about it.

Funny side note, apparently Wal-Mart demanded a less racy cover for the game. To which Atlus is planning on with Catherine's face and lots of pretty flowers for their stores. Reportedly, that makes it look a LOT like a Barbie game. Gonna be fun at Christmas when Grandma buys that for little Debbie.

This is one of the things that bugs me about Persona 3 (seriously, 3 was also an offender) and 4. Especially when there's a crap ton of dialog before a boss fight and they don't even provide a save point before said fight.

Whoa, hold on a minute. You're expecting me to pay for porn? When I can get all the sexual deviancy I can wish for for free on the internet? You speak madness, Atlus!

Yes, but this is interactive, so it's almost like you're in a relationship with a real woman! Just grab a blow up doll and you're good to go!

Seriously, this game better be compatible with the Playstation Move because I'm going to need to have one controller-free hand to get the full experience! 8D

I know! What were they thinking! I can get it free from my GF!

:P

Actually we're both stoked to play this game on her 360.

The whole concept behind this game is what's keeping me from actually being interested enough to play it.

The puzzle solving is right up my alley, but the story behind it is just too odd.

Then you're missing out. Companies should be praised for innovation and creative storytelling rather than putting you behind a gun sight and slapping some dual-stick movement in every game.

Anyway...

I got the "True Cheater" ending for my first play through. Holy crap was that funny. I wasn't sure if they were going to be able to reconcile how I was playing but they did and it was awesome.

The story and quirkiness appeals to me, but the puzzle solving "game" portion really doesn't. This will be one of those I'll probably try renting or completely skipping.

I'm excited about the HD Metal Gears as well, especially Snake Eater.
