CLASSICS LINE-UP! Checklist of characters from each season

:-?
Does anyone know if a checklist exists of every character that has appeared in each season of the G1 cartoons?

Like many of us who collect Transformers, I would like to mark off each Classics/Henkei/Universe/Generations figure I pick up from their respective season (or seasons), creating that ultimate complete line-up! :D
These line-ups will also need to include figures created by 3rd Party companies where Hasbro/Takara have yet to do. ;)

Heres hoping you wonderful robot lovers can help!

:BOT: Edit: Scroll down for my take on the ultimate Classics Line Up! :CON:

TF Wiki likely has something along the lines of what you're looking for, but there are definitely folks who have been keeping score with which bots from the toyline have seen updated Classics versions. When it comes to characters from the cartoon, do you just mean speaking roles? Do animation errors count (generic Seekers, etc)? Just robots, or humans and aliens too?
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Ramjet, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, Blurr, or 3rd Party Motobot Arcee, iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn

It all depends on your personal standards, really. Will you accept figures from other continuities (mostly Aligned like WFC and Prime) and repaints, or just unique new molds? Whatever the case may be, I have been keeping track myself, (but not of the 3rd Party toys) and may be able to supply you with a thorough list. Just tell me what you'd like to see :)
Top 5 Priorities:

1) BW Neo X-7 Elphaorpha
2) BW II VS-18 Powerhug vs. Autocrusher
3) Universe 2003 Night Slash Cheetor
4) Arms Micron Terrorcon Bumblebee
5) BW Convobat (red) & Megalligator (purple)

Preparing to move to the US!

I realise this could be a massive knightmare which I can never wake up from... but Im willing to give Freddy a run for his money!

Not fussed about aliens or humans, just 'bots really.
I can go for generic Seekers and the like, and filling those missing characters out with repaints, WfC/FoC and Prime would be fine by me.
Heck, I even go for a little bit of re-purposing as I have some stand-ins from Energon, Marvel Crossover, DotM and PCC at the moment! ;)

A Deluxe line-up with some Voyagers thrown in for scale, with as much modern engineering for posability as possible is a must.

Over time I guess any list will change and be updated as new releases come along, be they official Hasbro/Takara products or 3rd Party homages, but I feel a strong order to what is now becoming a huge hobby and pastime is a must! :-B

I open to any help from any of you Transforming robot lovers and appreciate any feedback you can offer.

Motto: "No matter where you go, there you are."
Threads are always more awesome with pictures! (Okay, maybe not always... I suppose a thread about feces or rotting flesh or something could do without photos... But I digress...)

Where was I? Ah yes... First off, a bit of a disclaimer. I am always hesitant to bring up third party figures in a thread outside of the third party forum... but you yourself acknowledged that such things may be necessary to fill some of the gaps Has/Tak haven't filled themselves yet. So I hope the more hardline anti-third party folk will forgive a touch of it.

Anyway, on with my post!

I'm going to present some photos, and below each photo will be a list of the figures in it. The list will be based on the vehicle modes in the photos, from left to right, back row to front row. After the character's name, it will state within parenthesis who the manufacturer is if it is a third party figure, or what figure it is if it is a repurposed figure (unless it is repurposed from a figure with the same name.) Some official figures may have third party accessories. These will only be noted if they make up a significant percentage of the whole. Also, many figures have Reprolabels, which will not be noted.

Any talk of repurposing is, of course, highly open to personal opinion and thus anything I say on the matter should not be taken as fact.

The TFWiki doesn't really have a list of which characters appear in which season. (Unless I missed something somewhere.) If you really want to know that, I suppose you'd have to look at the character listings for each episode and collate the data yourself. The closest the TFWiki does have is a list of which toys were released in the toyline each year, which is a close but not exact approximation.

I have my collection split up along similar lines. I have my "Season One" shelves, which are mostly those robots known to have been on the Arc when it crashed. (There are a few additional figures above that included, mainly as far as Decepticon jets are concerned.)

They are as follows:

Autobots:
Image

-Hauler (repurposed from RTS Solar Storm Grappel)
-Prawl
-Ironside
-Gears (iGear)
-Trailbreakr
-Ratchet
-Optimus Prime (cab is Has/Tak, trailer is Fansproject)
-Huffer (iGear)
-Hound
-Sideswipe
-Bluestreak
-Wheeljack
-Sunstreaker
-Jazz
-Windchargr
-Brawn
-Bumblebee
-Mirage
-Cliffjumper
-Spike & Sparkplug (Impossible Toys)

Decepticons:
Image

(Naming will be a bit tricky here, as the figures are less in even rows. Hopefully the list will be followable.)
-Purple Generics (x3) (CHMS)
-Reflector (Perfect Effects)*
-Megatron
-Acid Rain and other two Rainmakers (CHMS)**
-Sunstorm
-Soundwave
-Generic Black Seeker (CHMS)
-Lazerbeak (repurposed from Real Gear Booster X10)
-Skywarp
-Frenzy
-Starscream ***
-Ravage
-Rumble
-Thundercracker
-Buzzsaw (not in my collection, as far as I know no classics update)

* There is also, if it suits your tastes better, a second third party Reflector. There is, technically, an official one coming soon. But as a Targetmaster type figure with only a single robot mode (rather then splitting into three robots) it does not work as Reflector to me. I'll likely have it, as it comes with another figure I do want, but it will not be my Reflector.
** Normally, I try to always go with first party figures when they are available, and there was an official, general retail Acid Storm with a green camo deco, but he seemed pointless to me without the other two. There were recently official Rainmakers made as an expensive convention exclusive, but I am unlikely to ever have those. I had these CHMS ones before the convention exclusive set was made, if the official versions had come first I would likely have just gone without. But already having these, I wasn't about to just throw them out.
*** Yeah, he's anachronistically sporting his coronation gear in robot mode... But what the heck? It looks cool.

There would be other characters who would technically be from Season One, such as Jetfire, or the Dinobots. But they were not Arc occupants (or other random generic Decepticon jets) and thus, in my collection, fall in with the "Other Pre-Movie Figures."

Autobots:
Image

-Powerglide
-Jetfire
-Seaspray
-Inferno
-Silverbolt
-Warpath
-Tracks
-Red Alert
-Smokescreen

Also Pictured:

-Breacher (on Seaspray's back) - technically not a G1 character, but he works too well with this Seaspray toy to not have with him.
-Drift (between Warpath and Tracks) - A G1 character, but not from the cartoon or the original toyline. Seemed to fit best (in my collection) with this group, so in he went.
-Hubcap (between Tracks and Red Alert) - not a G1 character, but too awesome not to have! (Reprolabels make him homage G2 Volt.)

In addition to the above, there are two minibots from the '85 toyline that I didn't include in the above photo. But they are included in this photo:

Image

-Beachcomber (top row, far right)
-Cosmos (bottom row, far left) (Cosmos is getting another Classics style update soon.)

Pre-movie Autobots not in the above photos, but in the G1 toyline:

-Grapple (he does have a Classics toy, see Hauler above)
-Skids (getting a Classics style update very soon)
-Hoist (recently got a Classics style update, I acquired it after having taken the above photos.)
-Grimlock (does have a Classics figure, and I do own it, but I neglected to include it in my photos.)
-Sludge (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Swoop (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Slag (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Snarl (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Topspin (third party option available)
-Twin Twist (third party option available)
-Roadbuster (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Whirl (getting a Classics style update very soon)
-Blaster (see my next post)
-Perceptor (see my next post)
-Omega Supreme (some may use a repurposed "Year of the Snake" Omega Supreme, for others there is a third party option)
-Power Dashers (three figures, had no appearance in cartoon, no Classics update I am aware of)
-Omnibots (three figures, had no appearance in cartoon, no Classics update I am aware of)
-Air Raid (third party option available)
-Fireflight (third party option available)
-Skydive (third party option available)
-Slingshot (third party option available)
--The previous four, along with a third party Silverbolt, can form the gestalt Superion. (One can also repurpose a Revenge of the Fallen Superion if they don't wish to go third party.)
-Blades (no Classics update I am aware of)
-First Aid (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Groove (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Hot Spot (does have an official update, which I do not own, via a recolour of the Inferno mold)
-Streetwise
--The above five would theoretically form the gestalt, Defensor. The officially released Hot Spot mentioned is not designed to form part of a gestalt.

Decepticons:

Image

-Blitzwing
-Thrust
-Ramjet
-Onslaught
-Octane*
-Astrotrain
-Durge

*Technically, Octane is a post-movie character, but I wanted to keep my Decepticon Triple-Changers together.

Also Pictured:

-G2 Megatron (between Astrotrain and Durge) - Why not?
-Lugnut (to the right of Durge) - Like Drift, a G1 character not from the original cartoon or toyline.
-Divebomb (to the right of Lugnut) - not a G1 character, but like Hubcap, too awesome not to have!

Pre-Movie Decepticon Gestalts:

(I am waiting on the Stunticons before taking a photo of these figures in the style of the other pictures I am presenting here, but here is a random photo of them, in gestalt mode only, that I do have.)

Image
-Devastator (made from Bonecrusher, Hook, Long Haul, Mix Master, Scrapper, and Scavanger) (MakeToys)
-Bruticus (made from Brawl, Blast Off, Onsaught, Swindle, and Vortex) (as pictured, a mix of official Has/Tak and Fansproject. Technically possible to make a Bruticus using only Has/Tak.)

Pre-movie Decepticons not in the above photos, but in the G1 toyline:

-Bombshell (third party option available)
-Kickback (third party option available)
-Shrapnel (third party option available, getting a Classics style update very soon)
-Barrage (third party option available)
-Chop Shop (third party option available)
-Ransack (third party option available)
-Venom (no Classics update I am aware of)
-Shockwave (well, Devastator is pictured holding a third party Legends class offering. There are a few third party figures or popularly repurposed figures, but none yet that say "Classics Shockwave" to me, personally)
-Breakdown (third party option available)
-Dead End (third party option available)
-Drag Strip (third party option available)
-Motormaster (third party option coming soon)
-Wildrider (third party option available)
--The above five figures form the gestalt, Menasor.

Wow, this is getting long. Well, I think this should be a comprehensive list of what figures there are for characters from the first two seasons.

For any figures with the notation, "no Classics update I am aware of," if there is a third party option, or a popularly repurposed figure, I hope other people reading this feel free to point them out.

I shall break here, and be back hopefully tomorrow with figures from the movie and beyond. (This will include the above omitted Blaster and Perceptor, who were both in the show and the original toyline before the movie, but which I felt looked better on my shelves paired with the movie/after movie figures.)

Note to other forum members: This was a long post! If you wish to quote it in replies, please edit the quote to only include the relevant part you are responding to. Thank you!

Just thought I'd add my thoughts on a few official offerings

-Huffer (iGear) - There is BotCon toy redecoed from Cybertron Armorhide

-Swoop (no Classics update I am aware of) - There's a Classics Mini-Con

-Roadbuster (no Classics update I am aware of) - Universe 2.0 redeco of Cybertron Defence Hot Shot

-Air Raid (third party option available)
-Fireflight (third party option available)
-Skydive (third party option available)
-Slingshot (third party option available)
--The previous four, along with a third party Silverbolt, can form the gestalt Superion. (One can also repurpose a Revenge of the Fallen Superion if they don't wish to go third party.) - The ROTF Superion was sold as under the Universe 2.0 banner as G1 in some markets. It's worth noting that Slingshot (I think) was replaced by 'Airazor' though, who may or may not be a new character

-Blades (no Classics update I am aware of) - Universe 2.0 Voyager/Legend redeco of Cybertron Evac

-Streetwise - Botcon redeco of Universe 2.0 Prowl in G2 colours

-Shockwave (well, Devastator is pictured holding a third party Legends class offering. There are a few third party figures or popularly repurposed figures, but none yet that say "Classics Shockwave" to me, personally) - Of course, you can also use the Fall of Cybertron figure, whih was repurpused as G1 Shockwave by IDW

-Devastator - Classics redeco of Energon Devastator (Mixmaster and Hook have been replaced by Hightower, who might be a combination of the two)
-Breakdown (third party option available) - TFCC have provided 2 options retooled from Universe Sideswipe, in G2 and now G1 colours

-Dead End (third party option available) - Generations Scout redecoed from ROTF Breakdown in Wildrider colours

-Drag Strip (third party option available) - Universe 2.0 'Special Edition' redeco of Classics Mirage

-Wildrider (third party option available) - Rare Henkei redeco of Classics Rodimus. Also, see Dead End above for cheaper option

-Motormaster(third party option available) - Generations Legend Motorbreath redeco of RTS Optimus Prime

Not back yet with the movie/post-movie figures. That might get delayed by a new project I just started on...

This discussion actually got me quite interested in trying to compile a definitive catalogue of such things, and thus I have started doing so on my own website, Yotsuya's Reviews. I've got a new section called, "Classics" Toy Catalogue.

Image

It will be an ongoing project for a little while. I currently have finished the 1984 Autobots. (Wreckgar, while I am using the iGear Rager figure as my catalogue's Huffer, I did make a note under it about the Botcon figure you pointed out.)

I'll be fine finishing 1984 on my own, and quite possibly 1985 and most of '86 as well. But as I get further into things, I anticipate needing some of my fellow forum members help in making suggestions on possible repurposed figures where there is no definitive official or third party options, and may also seek some photo submissions on such things as well. I'll make specific posts with requests when I need such things.

For now, though... enjoy what I have thus far! Feedback, suggestions, and other such comments are welcome.

I have further updated the project I mentioned having started in my last post, so that it now includes the 1984 Decepticons.

Looking forward to 1985, I will need a bit of help here. Can anyone provide me with photos of the following figures? I would like each figure photographed individually against a neutral (preferably white) background, with two photos of each figure -- one robot mode, and one alt mode.

-2006 Minicon Dinobot Swoop
-Mech Ideas Apex
-Mech Ideas Geminus
-Universe 2008 Roadbuster
-2013 Year of the Snake Omega Spreme

-Fansproject Insecticons (thee figures, please photograph individually)
-Fansproject Deluxe Insecticons (three figures, please photograph individually)
-Fall of Cybertron Shockwave (as I personally didn't care for this figure for repurposing into a Classics Shockwave, it would only be a placeholder until hopefully someday a better option does come along. Thus, I have no opinion on if the Deluxe mold or the Voyager mold would be better, and would welcome whichever is sent to me first.

I am sure that, worst case scenario, I can find suitable photographs online. But if I can, I'd like to try to keep the photos I am using as ones specifically taken for this project. If you send me a photo and I use it, I will be sure to credit you for its use in the article.

I would also welcome opinions on what figures could be used as Classics style updates (and photographs of those figures) for the following characters:

-Slag
-Sludge
-Snarl
-The Powerdashers -- Zetar ("Drill Type"), Aragon ("F-1 Type"), and Cromar ("Jet Type")
-The Omnibots -- Camshaft, Downshift, and Ovrdrive
-Deluxe Insecticon Venom

Also, want some pictures of the PE cassettes as alternatives?

Hmm... I didn't care for the PE Cassettes... And, more objectively, with few exceptions (such as where the official toy is a convention exclusive) when there is an official version I am trying to stick with that on my list. Currently, as pictured, the cassettes are all using official toys. So I think I shall stick with that.

Although... Was there a PE Buzzsaw, and do you have that? I don't think I'd use it in the main photo, but I could present that one as an alternative option.

As far as anything else you might have to offer off of my list of requests, thanks in advance!

One more update to my project. I'm jumping ahead of 1985, and presenting, Bonus #1: Pre-Movie Characters With "Classics" Style Toys Who Were Not Represented In the Original G1 Toyline.

Now I'll take a bit of a break, and wait until either all of the picture requests I made for the 1985 artcles have been met, or a week or so passes (at which point I will scour the internet looking for appropriate pre-existing photos).

Hope these have been enjoyable thus far!

There is indeed a PE Buzzsaw. Named Buzzer, he was dual released with Laser a few months after the blue and orange Autobot versions of the bird mold were released.

Well, as mentioned, I didn't care for the look of the Perfect Effects "cassettes." And, of course, unless you happen to also have a Reprolabeled Spark Blue Music Label Soundwave, it would be hard to get a photograph of the two of them together with which to replace the photos I have now. (Since they were sold as a pair, that's how I wanted to photograph them.) However, if you were feeling like contributing any photographs to me, and those photographs indluded the PE Buzzsaw, I could see fit as to include it as footnote. Failing a better representation of Buzzsaw to call "definitive" as far as my article goes, I suppose I may as well present the option.

(It isn't anything personal against Perfect Effects. They're my preferred Reflector option, as will be seen when we get to 1996.)

By the way, for anyone who may have already checked out the article mentioned in my last post in the short time since then, I should mention that... whoops! I forgot a figure. So that article has been updated slightly.

No worries. I don't expect everyone to like everything. Personally, I don't think Device Label Soundwave fits in with Classics, so I only currently own the white version, who sits on my Soundwave shrine shelf.

Indeed, these things can be quite subjective!

Even though I am trying as much as possible to stick with official figures (filling in holes where that isn't an option) there are many to whom that isn't good enough. A lot of people, for example, will turn their noses up at Classics Megtaron, in favor of such things as Hegamon. To me, Hegamon was an interesting effort, but since the character had already been done by Hasbro, I was all set until such a time as Hasbro makes a better looking Classics style G1 Megatron with a gun mode. (So yeah... Likely never, unless you count the awesome Legends figure.)

Only time in my collection (and thus in these articles I am writing) that a third party figure will win when there are both third party and official options is if the third party figure came first, and the official one is downright awful. These articles are attempting to favor official toys, using the third party items only to fill otherwise unfillable holes.

(Although I will admit exceptions... Technically there is a Classics Devastator, but he was a rather poor repaint of an Energon mold that was fine as an Energon homage to G1, but not at all suited to being promoted to represent the actual G1 characters. Certainly didn't help that they were missing a member! But for the most part, I will stick to that goal. And in my view the upgraded Bruticus does fit that goal since the two Fansproject figures would be pretty useless without the Has/Tak set to go with them.)

You know, I feel like I've hijacked Robotmel's thread with discussion about my new project, which while it was inspired by his questions is, I think, a separate thing. It is going to be an ongoing project, with its own requests and (hopefully) discussion. I'm going to start a separate thread for my Classics Catalogue project. (After I get it going, I'll edit this post with a link to it.)

Edit: Here's the link!

Personally, I don't feel Rager works as a 'Classics' figure. To me, Classics/Universe/Generations etc are G1 characters in new bodies or upgraded (or new G1 characters/characters that never had toys before). Rager is more a version of the original Huffer design made with modern technology. If anything, he should be considered part of the Masterpiece line. A G1 design rather than a Classics redesign.

I'll admit the Seekers are a bit of a grey area within my theory, but I feel they have enough that's different about them to work

Cybertron Armorhide is on my Classics shelf as neo-G1 Pipes, just as the BotCon 2007 redeco serves as my neo-G1 Huffer. They work VERY well with the Classics aesthetic.

CLASSICS LINE-UP! Checklist of characters from each season

Postby robotmel » Tue Dec 17, 2013 10:37 am

Motto: "I once pooped an Energon Cube!"
Weapon: Dino-Missiles
:D

So here is my somewhat exhaustive list of what I would consider the ultimate Classics Line Up!

These lists are, of course, open to your own interpretation as we all have our own tastes and may favour an official figure as opposed to a 3rd Party figure or vice versa.

You will see some missing suggestions. These do not appear, as yet, to have a new Classics update (as far as I know) so are open to ones own choice or repurpose from a different line, whatever you like!

Feel free to copy, dissect, correct any errors, fill in the gaps, but most of all enjoy! ;)
