Classics Thrust WIP

Postby Boggs6ft7 » Mon Mar 26, 2007 8:30 am

Parts from both jets, models, and styrene. Still lots to do though.

This is the most kitbashing/scratchbuilding I have done so far for my customs.

Enjoy.

And it looks awesome! I think this is the most G1-faithful Classics Thrust I've seen so far!
Where do the turbines come from?

you would be correct. The turbofans are from a 1/32 A-10 and the wing parts are from a 1/100 A-10. I feel bad because it its a waste of a model, but those fans ended up working best.

I had a 1/72 A-10 a well, but those turbofans were too small in my opinion.

UPDATE, sort of.

I closed off the turbofan housings and I attached the wings to his legs. Not sure if I like it this way, I may change it.

Although its faithful to the G1 toy, I personally always thought Thrusts wings would look better on his back.

Which reminds me I have a pair of G1 Thrust wings in my parts bin somewhere. I bet I could mod them for this type of thing.

I like the cartoon-faithful. They do look good on his back, but this works quite well, too. Plus, being there's already a Classics Thrust with the wings on his back, this can be the one to go the other route. :)

Nice turbines. It's worth it.
Does he have any molding detail on the underside of his wings?
I wonder how big the G1 turbines are in comparison...

as Redline said, its a WIP. I kept taking the legs apart to work on them and then putting them back on to see how it looks. I didn't feel like putting the feet on each time.

There isn't any underwing detail like the toy and there won't be any. Call me lazy, I call myself practical.

They are bigger, I suppose you could take them out and sand them down to size.

I definitely think the wings should be mounted on the back. Sure, the G1 fig had them on his legs, sort of, but if you think about it, so did Starscream and co. I always thought that of the 'coneheads', Thrust was the one closest to the original three in style, right down to using the same weapon moulds. As great as the wings currently are (and they are), I think they're a bit unwieldy to be mounted on the legs; the sweep of the wings meant it suited Dirge and Ramjet, making them look almost like capes, but that doesn't work with this lad.

Here are the pictures I was using to base him off of. Thanks to mass shifting, I don't think I can pull off the leg look, in most pictures they are attached at his upper legs, and I did the best I could with that.

I'm beginning to think I'm just going to mount them to his back even though his legs would be more accurate. Annoying.

I think that you have done a terrific job on him also. :D Here's something I was wondering about... In the pictures for your reference, Thrust has huge kneecaps, what if and is there a way to beef up the toys kneecaps to further immitate the cartoon look to him and if it would sort of close the gap in distance from the upper legs to the wings? Just a thought, and like I said before it looks terrific as it is right now. Keep up the good work :D .
Roll with the changes...

While having the wings where they are is more G1 accurate, they would make it much harder to walk or run. He would be very clumsy. From a practicality standpoint, having them on the back would be better. From a G1 Accuracy perspective, their current placement is better. You just have to decide which is more important, practicality or G1 accuracy. As far as the kneeguards go, Personally, I think they're fine as they are.

i prefer the current way. it was an 80's cartoon. it was never designed to make sense. that and tramp thinks way too much into this :)

Depends on whether it's the cartoon that was important to you. There's a lot of people who focus on "toon accuracy", despite the fact that not only were the cartoon models heavily simpified (have you ever noticed how Punch and Counterpunch switch forms?), but often a single character had a dozen different way of drawing him (try and find a definitive reference for Devastator's face ;)).
But there are also those of us who use the toys as our primary point of reference. After all, when it comes down to it, the toys are the crux of it all (the cartoon was designed to sell the toys, not the other way round).
And there are those of us that like to take what the originals have done and try to improve on them... make them what we think they should have been.

Personally, I agree with everything Tramp said in his previous post 100% (yeah, I actually said that :P). Though he was usually shown with the wings on his legs, they'd look a lot better, both aesthetically and practically, if they were on his back.

you could put the wings hanging off his hips too. it might even be identical to having them on the upper-legs.

Another "sort of" update.

Here is Thrust's head and his tail wing. The tail still needs to be touched up. I don't like the gray on the tail and I'm going to make it darker. Whatever color gray I end up with on the tail will also be used on his face.

On a side note, Thrust is being "painted" using mainly vinyl dye.
