Damn animals ...

Going back 13 years ago we had the last cat that I grew up with put down. Something happened to him and he lost a lot of weight and became overly affectionate (both the opposite of what he was) and he clearly wasn't getting any better, so we decided to put him down. Like I said, he was the last of the two cats I grew up with. He was about 12 years old himself.

A few months after that I took my mother to the animal refuge just to see what cats they had, we had no intentions of getting another cat, it was a simple look and leave.

Unfortunately one cat had other ideas and the minute my mother got near this one little cat smooged and exploded with affection.

Of course we were only there for a look so we left without the cat. But mum and I both realised we'd been won over so a few days later we went back and got the cat. Good thing we did because someone else wanted her as well.

Turns out the cat put on the same song and dance for everyone that turned up. Should have been a sign then she was a smart cat.

So she came home, and we named her Tegan (after the companion from Dr Who) and for the next (nearly) 13 years she was part of our life.

Until today that is.

A couple of weeks ago she starting vanishing for a day or so, come home, have a feed and leave again. Each time she came home she was skinnier (obviously due to not eating) and had more and more scratches on her. We sort of got through to her and she started staying in the back yard and we'd take food down to her.

This morning I took food down to her and found a chunk of hair torn away.

So we made the decision, given her age, we opted to not let her suffer and had her put down.

Before we did, I went down and spoke to her, I poured my heart out to her about how much I loved her blah blah blah all through tears. And what did she do? Gave me a meow and then snobbed me in favour of the food!

Typical bloody cat. You pour your hearts out to them and they ignore you to think of themselves. I wouldn't have expected anything else from her though.

So she's gone now. She was a part of me life for nearly a third of my life. She was always there to talk to, always there to get a smooge from, and always there to keep my feet warm in winter.

Anyway, I posted a pic of her the other day, but here is Tegan and the boys

Only Benny the black and white nasty looking one remains (we nearly lost him last year to a tick) after Pembo vanished. We blame my bitch of a neighbour for arranging for his disappearance, probably only a matter of time now before Benny vanishes as well as she complained about him the other day.

*sigh* Bloody pets. They come into our lives and can leave just as quickly as another human. And they can have just as big of an impact on your heart as a human.

I'm really going to miss her.

Sorry to hear that Burn. It's true, your pets can really grow on you.
About two years ago, our dog, Maggie, died from a back problem. I remember coming home from school and see mum crying. I asked her what was wrong and she said that Maggie had passed away at the vet, earlier that morning. It really sucked because she spent the last two days at the vet, and I hadn't seen her since we took her there. :-(

Sorry to hear about your kitty. Mine died last year, and I was heartbroken, he was about 15 and could always make me feel better if I was having a bad day. I miss that cat and don't think can replace him. It can get rough but just remember all
the good times you had.
I used to wake up in the morning with my cat lying on my chest purring like a lawn mower. As annoying as it was to be woken up, I knew he loved me and would get a scratch behind his ears
and on his belly.

I had a cat. She was literally THE prettiest cat I have ever seen. She had long, comepletely white fur, and gigantic green eyes. She was also a little over weight, too, but that didn't matter.

Then, about a year ago, she started acting weird. She'd be yelling all the time, and she lost a TON of fur. Then, like your's, Burn, she started to get disturbingly skinny.

I had to make the call, and I gave the order to put her down. My dad had to give her a bath, first, because she was loaded with fleas, and vets won't take in animals with fleas.

They did this while I was at school, though, so I wasn't there after my kitty of eleven years went away.

Yeah, I miss my kitty.

They are good on bad days aren't they?

I know a few years back when I was dealing with serious cases of depression and anxiety she'd be there on the bed with me each night.

I'm a restless sleeper, tossing and turning a lot, i'm sure the poor girl got a few kicks from me, but she stuck with me because she was concerned.

The really odd thing though, whenever she didn't sleep on the bed with me I slept deeply, didn't recall many of my dreams. But when she was there I recalled the dreams and they were some damn weird ones. Part of a cat's psychic abilities? Who knows. All I know is she was a good cat to talk to, and she was one of those cats that were quite vocal when talking back.

Unfortunately it was a talent she taught the boys, Pembo being the most regrettable because his "voice" was as bad as fingernails on a chalkboard.

My aunt used to work in an animal shelter, and would convince my grandmother to adopt any of the kitties she became really attached to. I grew up in a house full of cats. When I was born we had 8 cats, and another 1 was addopted when I was 1 or 2. They're all gone now, but we have a new one because the house was just too empty without the kitties.

When my dad was giving me...*Ahem* The Talk, my cat jumped up on mybed with me. I payed more attention to her than my dad.

Not a good move. At least I figured it out through porn.

Sorry to hear about your cats... but why keep them outside? There's more harm that can be brought upon them being outside a house. Some areas or neighborhoods might not be a problem, but these days people seem more cruel.

I love cats, and last year I had to have my own cat put to sleep because of intestinal cancer. He got real skinny, and towards the very end of his life his pupils would be uneven in size, one bigger then the other. He was 15 yrs. 8mths. He was an indoor/outdoor cat, and there were a lot of times I would worry about him getting run over. (My parents wouldn't let me make him a strictly indoor cat) So I think cats should be indoors, IMO, just because of all the dangers there are between humans and nature.

Sorry about that, my dog is 13 and seems like he's got at the most a year or 2 to go, who knows maybe he'll surprise us. He's got arthritis, he's somewhat overweight (hard to tell with all the fur), he's got fatty tumors(though their not noticeable), his breath is getting a little raspy, and he gets epilepsy due to stressful incidents. Problems about my dad considering putting him down since he tripped over the threshold of our door a couple of times recentlty, and because he recently got his claws trimmed he's sliding a little on our hardwood floor. It seems like every little thing is convincing my dad that he is "suffering" and that he should be put down, but even now my dog isn't tripping over the threshold anymore. I know my dog is old, but my dad is going a little overboard on what suffering is or not and thats what scares me. I want my dog to go when he is ready to go, not when my father says so.

Sorry to hear about your cat.

We had a cat when I was younger. But then my parents deceided to get a divorced and my father got him. He was a great cat. One day I went down to visit that idiot man and found out he'd been gone for over a week. Nice. So I went looking for the cat...

I found him in the basement. He'd been dead for maybe a week. And I found his corpse. :(

I've never let that [Insert which ever term you generally use] forget it. The vet said if the cat had gotten help in time, he could have lived. Blockage in his intestines.

Now my mother's got a 13 year old dog. I love my pets but I hate them too.

Very, very sorry to hear that, mate. I fully understand how much a faithful cat can mean to you, when you're down, or when you simply want a good laugh together.

You really have my sympathies. *hugs*
