Decepticon Frigate The Obliteration

Homeworld of the Transformers. Drained and ravaged by thousands of vorns of civil war, Cybertron is a mere barren husk of once beautiful and thriving cybernetic world. While recovered enough to allow Transformers to move on its surface once again, it is still plagued by ion storms and any Transformer unfortunate enough to venture there without energon supply of their own is certain to face a stasis lock.

Onslaught drummed the tips of his manual actuators on the console of the Oblitiration's navigational system for a moment. Either their return was not as critical and urgent as he had originally suspected, or they were currently unable to confer with anyone of command-level rank over a secure grid frequency. An unfortunate inconvenience either way, but it was nothing that would shift the Combaticon commander's outlook on the prospect of returning to Cybertron.

"Polyhex it is," Onslaught said calmly. "Set a course for the given coordinates."

Onslaught had been in transit long enough. He was looking forward to getting back in to active status once again.

Swindle coaxes the antigrav to life, and the ship once more floats out of the hangar and up into Cybertrons atmosphere. As the ship clears the Ionosphere, he engages plasma drive, and the ship boosts towards orbit.

"All systems stable, sir. Plotting a course to follow the Thanatos at a distance of 50 megamiles. Hyperdrive is charging. Awaiting your orders."

The Munitions Specialist doesn't spare a glance back at his home planet. It was just another place to do business, nothing more. Another place to survive, before moving on to new oppurtunities. Sentimentality was not something Swindle knew; In the world of buying and selling, you learned not to get attached to things.

Vortex activated a pair of engine diagnostic protocols, shunting power from basic weapons to help reinforce the structural integrity fields. Taking the time to allow his internal systems scans to run their basic courses, Vortex leaned over his console and activated a pair of flight guidence beacons, slaving their imput to the primary flagship of the formation.

"I hope this trip is worth the energon," he gripped to no one in particular. His screen confirmed his commands and he redirected the programs to Swindles terminal. Not that he minded the work of slaving over the technical monitoring of the Frigate that had been placed under the command of the Combaticon unit, well no, that wasn't true. He really did mind the tedious assignments. Pass it off to one of the others and afford himself to the study of even more interrogation techniques pried from various other operatives across the front. Now that was his idea of thrilling gossip, how much stress could a single reverse clamp place on the limbs of one of those new model Autobot soldiers before it broke... or snapped in half.

"Oh, crew medical reports ready for hyperspace jump. Mentioning something about not giving them such a bumpy ride... I believe their words involved, Blast-off and keep it steady or revolking of pilot license." He curved a brief mocking smirk over at the pilot at the far hub. "Oh and try not to run into any planets this time."

Blast-Off was happy that someone else had taken the initiative to pilot the Obliteration out of the launching silo and into the skies above Cybertron, even if that mech had been Swindle. At least the space warrior wasn’t going to have to do all of the work himself. Playing the role of navigator was enough of a job at the present time, especially since the Thanatos was leading the trek back to Earth anyway. Why waste his talents piloting the vessel, as well, when Blast-Off could be occupied with other tasks. Swindle could easily handle following the big Predacon ship in front of their own.

As Blast-Off began pulling up data on the planet called Earth, he overheard Vortex gripe about something, although it was barely audible to his receptors. That mumbling was quickly followed by a much clearer comment regarding the space warrior’s ability to pilot the ship. Apparently, the interrogator had been so preoccupied with whatever he was doing to notice that the munitions expert was the one guiding the vessel.

“Don’t look at me, Vortex. I’m just the navigator. Swindle’s the one steering the ship,” Blast-Off pointed out as he glared over at the grey mech. “And if you’re referring to the time when we bounced off the atmosphere of that rogue planetoid, that was not my fault. I conducted all of the appropriate scans before engaging the warp drive. How was I supposed to know that ball of rock would suddenly stray into our path. Besides, if it weren’t for my quick reflexes, we would’ve crashed directly into it instead of just grazing the atmosphere. So, you should actually be thanking me for saving your spark.”

The space warrior finished with a smile under his face shield before turning his attention back towards his terminal’s view screen where a variety of information regarding Earth had already finished populating all of the necessary fields. Blast-Off had no intention of studying the planet too closely as he hoped they would not be there for too long. A new alt mode might be necessary if their stay was lengthened beyond what he expected. However, judging by what he could see of this backwater world's meager space program, if it could even be called that, picking a suitable alt mode that fit Blast-Off's space warrior stature would be rather difficult.

The Obliteration--Bridge

Onslaught had allowed the members of his unit to handle the minutiae of getting the ship in the air with minimal instruction or interference from him. His thoughts were elsewhere anyway. The myriad of possibilities awaiting them once they eventually arrived in the Sol system was almost impossible to account for.

Razorclaw and he had pretty much determined the loyalties of those here on Cybertron. The Combaticon Commander would not be so quick to throw the loyalty of himself and his unit behind a member of the Decepticon High Command, unless they could establish that it would be the best thing for his unit. He suspected Razorclaw felt much the same way.

He had to wonder if those on Earth had similar concerns, especially since they were faced with the prospect of Starscream as their leader. Would Scrapper and Motormaster accept his influence so easily?

"Swindle, get me a secure commlink with Razorclaw on the Thanatos. Channel it to my quarters," the Combaticon Commander said, rising from his seat to leave the bridge. Onslaught knew that such things were Swindle's realm, even more so than he himself. He had never been one to ignore the specialties of his soldiers, especially not out of misplaced pride.

The Obliteration--Bridge

Swindle turns to Onslaught as the commander leaves the bridge, saluting as he does. "Will do sir!" He then turns to the console and begins to work.

The possibility of tapping into this communication occurred to the Munitions Specialist, but he thought better of it. It was clear this had something to do with that standoff that he and Razorclaw had gotten them into, which had almost started a coup. Swindle didn't want to be involved in that again, and that meant that if someone were to tie him down and plug into his cortex later, he could truthfully say he was ignorant of any plans.

Dang, could it be that the Combaticons are finally going to get in over their heads? I just got back with them and already I might have to leave again? Nuts. I like this crew. They work for me, and running out on them and looking for a new niche just wouldn't be the same.

Vortex spun around in his chair. "Of course it wasn't your fault. You were the one piloting, you were the one navigating... So yeah you have no culpability in the affair." He spoke with a rubbing grin. He had finished the last piece of crew dianostics and reports. Filing them away for later review by Onslaught, he pushed himself up from his terminal.

"To be frank, now that you have confirmed my fears regarding who's piloting this ship, Blast-Off... I think I am going to take myself down to sickbay." He nodded over to Swindle briefly. Sickbay was by all practical standards, the strongest part of any ship. Typically located in the heart of all designs both Autobot and Decepticon. While he didn't question a team member's ability or crosstraining, as they were all adept and filling the roles of others, he still didn't pass up an opportunity to tweek the cylinders of his teammates.

With Brawl at tactical, at least Vortex hoped he was at tactical, and Swindle at the helm... Vortex was pretty sure that they would avoid the chaos that normally came with brief jumps through hyperspace. Grabbing a stack of data slates he had carefully placed on the console next to him, he pivoted towards the turbolift.

As Onslaught left the bridge, Vortex followed suit.

Onslaught stepped in to the oddly unfamiliar room. It had been his, ever since Megatron had granted him and his unit command of this parrticular Decepticon vessel, but the Combaticon Commander had never spent much time here. He preferred to be on the bridge with his unit, dealing firsthand with whatever they had to deal with.

As a took a seat in the aged, metallic chair, he saw the the link had been established.

"Razorclaw, I thought it would be wise for us to reassess our strategy before arriving to Earth. We have learned from our actions in Polyhex that the scientists will likely band together, however, they will be no more effective at leading the Decepticon empire than Starscream and his Seeker cronies. I find myself unwilling to accept that Scrapper or Motormaster would blindly follow Starscream any more so than either of us are willing to blindly follow Shockwave. They, I think, will be the key to our changing the nature of Decepticon command and carry on Megatron's actual vision. We have to find out if either of them share our misgivings about how the leadership scenario is shaping up."

>>”Agreed, Commander Onslaught. Reassessment is necessary in order to determine the best course of action once we arrive back on Earth. I also agree with your position that the scientists will likely support one another. However, I feel that Lord Thunderwing’s motives for preventing us from taking Shockwave into custody came more from the feeling of being left out of the loop by us and not that he necessarily supports the Military Operations Commander. His actions seemed to have come from a more personal level then from scientific loyalty. This is not to say he won’t ultimately back Shockwave when the time comes, but it is something to consider as we move forward."

"Furthermore, remember that Blackwind has become Thunderwing’s closest confidant since their first meeting, and her dislike for Shockwave could have a great influence on the carapace-enhanced scientist. Blackwind is one factor to bare in mind here as she has no love for either Shockwave or Starscream, her loyalties having always been with Megatron and his vision for the Empire. Now that the slagmaker is gone, she will have to do what we must do and decide to whom her loyalty will now rest with. If we can win her support, then Lord Thunderwing will likely follow."

"As for Motormaster and Scrapper, I agree that they will likely not blindly do whatever Starscream wants, at least not indefinitely. If we can convince them to join with us, we'll then have the combined might of four elite Decepticon units. Add to that the enhanced power of both Thunderwing and Blackwind, and we'll be in an excellent position to help dictate who the next leader of the Decepticons will be.”<<

Onslaught listened to the Predacon Commander's analysis of the situation intently. After all, he had come to trust and respect the fellow commander's assessment of various strategic situations. And who better than he to possess insights regarding what had occurred on Cybertron prior to the Combaticons' return there?

"Hmm, your assessment of Thunderwing's motives is...intriguing. If what you say is true, he may see this as his opportunity to take command for himself. If all the various members of Megatron's high command structure feel similarly, things could get...destructive. I wonder who among them--if any of them--would be best to continue Megatron's vision."

That thought had crossed his mind many times, in one form or another, all during the course of the previous orn.

Blackwind's status as a confidante of Thunderwing was news to the Combaticon. He knew little of her, save for that her loyalty to Megatron was fairly well-known.

"If Blackwind is as close to Thunderwing as you suggest, she will likely do whatever he says, just as she did with Megatron before him."

If Thunderwing placed his support behind Shockwave, it seemed that Blackwind would likely choke down her distaste for the cyclops and follow suit. But if her distaste was that potent, Onslaught suspected that she would play to Thunderwing's nobler ambitions and push him to make a play of his own. After all, that's what Onslaught would do. Regardless, there were still too many "ifs" at play. For Onslaught, the coming breems would involve removing as many of them as possible.

"We still find ourselves faced with the same opportunity as we did on Cybertron--ensuring that the correct Decepticon leadership is in place. If this descends into utter chaos, I'm not going to sacrifice my unit to the whims of some would-be usurper's ego. I was reluctant to even think it before, but if matters continue to take shape as they have, is it also reasonable to ask if those of us who lead these tactical units on a cycle-to-cycle basis are better suited to shaping the future of the empire? We are already kingmakers. No one will lead the Decepticons if they do not have our support. Perhaps we should not so readily dismiss the throne itself."

Before, Onslaught would have felt treacherous, broaching such a subject. With circumstances what they were, it was now unavoidable. There was too much at stake to simply allow the next in line to take Megatron's mantle if they were not worthy to do so.

>>“If Lord Thunderwing decides to seek leadership of the Decepticons with Blackwind’s backing, then that places us in a precarious position. Do we back him, as well, or do we oppose? Both of them have untold and untested power now due to the carapace process they have undergone, but we do not yet know their limitations. They are very strong and imposing, no doubt, but if all four squads were united together then even Thunderwing and Blackwind would likely have to concede to our will. His long absence does not help his position as many will feel that he'll do what is best for himself and not the rest of the Empire.

“It is more than reasonable to ask that question, Commander Onslaught. Elite tactical units such as yours and mine have been responsible for many of the great strides the Empire has made over the countless vorns this war has raged. If is weren’t for our squads and other groups like us, the Decepticons would’ve lost to the Autobots long ago, even with Megatron still functioning. Now, more than ever, it is important for the specialty units to remain in the forefront to determine who will lead us all into the future. As you said, our support will be necessary for any mech to assume leadership. Therefore, we are the ones that hold the real power from here on out no matter who is on the throne. If we choose the right candidate to take control then perhaps it will be our influence that shapes the Empire even more so than the new leader, himself. In a way, the throne could be ours without any one of us having to actually sit on it. That may be a better solution than trying to decide which unit commander should ascend above the rest.”<<

“I know little of Thunderwing himself, save for the storied history of Valckasta. Even then, the warlord’s forebears were not exactly generous with what information they chose to reveal,” Onslaught began, responding to Razorclaw’s initial sentiment. “What I have seen leads to me to think that he would be as viable a successor as any of the others, save Starscream. I will be amazed if the Seeker rat has had no part to play in all of this.”

Onslaught then contemplated Razorclaw’s elaborated idea. The Predacon Commander had taken Onslaught’s line of questioning in a different direction than Onslaught himself had been considering. A puppet leader, for lack of a better phrase, was something that had never even been entertained in the history of the Decepticon empire, and for good reason, as Megatron’s leadership had seemed to be nigh eternal. The Combaticon could not say that it would be the ideal way to go forward, but it was not an option that could be discarded out of hand either. This was an unorthodox scenario. Unorthodox measures could well have to be employed for them to survive it.

“In truth, Razorclaw, the valor and competence you displayed in Shockwave’s tower has earned my loyalty. I would support your vision for leading the Decepticons, if you chose to seek it. The downside, naturally, is that whoever takes Megatron’s throne next will become an immediate target for assassination…so…your alternative is not without merit. If we proceed down that path, we should council with Scrapper and Motormaster immediately upon our arrival to the Sol system and see if any agreement can be reached on which Decepticon should receive the considerable advantage that our support would grant.”

However, I have never been one that found politics appealing as I would much rather be on the battlefield with my Predacons than directing the action from afar while stuck in a war room. Of course, we have also never been faced with the loss of Megatron before and thus all options should be considered.”

“If we are unable to find a suitable successor that we could have a substantial influence over, then perhaps I will have no choice but to step up and assume control to ensure that the specialty units had the majority voice in the Empire. I’d rather not have to take such a drastic step, but I will if I must. Of course, for that to happen I would also need the full support of Motormaster and Scrapper, otherwise Decepticons such as Starscream, Thunderwing and Shockwave would never accept my ascension and my reign would likely end before it even began. However, regardless of who ultimately assumes the throne, I agree that we must first seek council with the other commanders in order to see where they stand. Are they more agreeable to a puppet leader that we completely control ourselves, or would they rather have a unit commander such as myself being in charge?”<<

The Obliteration—Command Quarters

“Heavy questions. I’m as eager to get answers as you are,” Onslaught responded simply. “I suppose there’s little else worth discussing until we actually arrive and learn more. Until then, commander,” Onslaught said, disconnecting the link and rising from his command station. Just as before, these quarters held little appeal for him, isolating him from his unit. He wanted to get back on the bridge.

The Obliteration—Bridge

Completing the short trek in what probably amounted to record time; Onslaught entered the bridge of the Combaticon vessel once more and took his previous spot. He then addressed Blast-Off.

“Once we arrive within the Sol system and within scanning range of the planet, I’m going to need Scrapper and Motormaster’s location. Probably Starscream’s as well, just to be safe. Though, I’m sure our acting leader will likely seek to summon us as soon as he knows we’re there.”

Starscream—leader of the Decepticons. Onslaught had rarely encountered a more distasteful prospect. Much in the coming orns would depend on how solidly the Seeker leader had managed to secure his power base. If he was slacking in any way, there would be cracks in the foundation that could be exploited.

Bridge - Navigator’s Station

Blast-Off mostly ignored Vortex’s sarcasm, instead remaining focused on the terminal view screen in front of him. Once the interrogator had left the bridge for sick bay, the space warrior let out an audible sigh as he searched through the database of Earth space vehicles if they could even be categorized as such since these antiquated rockets and shuttles had an extremely limited range of travel. They basically served to only take their passengers into orbit and then back down to the surface again. These vehicles couldn’t even make it to the mudball’s own moon let alone another planet entirely. On top of all that none of the vessels in question were armed with any sort of weaponry, indicating that they were not used for military purposes.

What a disgrace, Blast-Off thought as he rested his chin on the palm of one hand. I’m never going to find a suitable alt mode if we have to stay for an extended period of time. I might as well just keep my Cybertronian form, anyway, since I’ll probably be regulated to orbital bombardment as usual. No one will see me up there all alone. The space warrior’s musings were interrupted when he came across a file on a top secret space plane called the Boeing X-37B. According to the data it’s an unmanned, shuttle-like craft developed by the United States Air Force. It’s believed to carry weapons of some kind. Although, due to the secretive nature of the vehicle, that aspect has not been confirmed. It’s better than nothing, I suppose.

It was then that Onslaught reentered the bridge and immediately addressed Blast-Off regarding the need to know the exact locations of Scrapper, Motormaster and Starscream once they had arrived in the Sol System. The space warrior spun around in his chair and gave the Combaticon leader a respectful nod. “Of course, Commander. Barring any unforeseen problems, I should be able to locate their signatures quickly once we are close enough to the planet.” Blast-Off's attention was then drawn to a beeping sound emanating from his console as a signal came through on a secured frequency. After determining its origin and contents, the space warrior returned his gaze to Onslaught. "Sir, we have received coordinates from the Thanatos. They have already initiated their transwarp drive and entered hyperspace. What are your orders?"

"Follow their course, Blast-Off. I'm sure they know what they're doing," Onslaught said, bringing up a pair of information screens.

As for the rest of the empire at large, I guess we'll see, the Combaticon Commander added, as an internal afterthought.

The Sol system would be their destiny now. It was time to address new challenges and acquire new victories.

Blast-Off nodded when Onslaught instructed him to simply follow the Thanatos. "You got it, Commander," the space warrior replied before returning his attention to the console in front of him. Apparently, he would now have to serve as both pilot and navigator. It was probably for the best, really, as there were few others present with the capability to fly the Obliteration. Vortex could do it, but he was currently off the bridge. Then there was Brawl who was better suited in destroying things than guiding ships. Swindle was the only other viable option, but his expertise lay more in selling weapons and making trades, not being at the controls of a large battle cruiser. He would make an acceptable co-pilot, however, even if his processor was concentrated more on the next big deal that he could make.

Blast-Off punched in the coordinates he had received from the Thanatos and quickly initiated the transwarp drive. The Obliteration then entered hyperspace, following the Predacon warship's trajectory as they headed towards the Sol System. Once they arrived at their destination, the orns that followed would prove to be quite interesting if the recent attempted coup by Onslaught and Razorclaw was any indication. Of course, there was the inevitable confrontation between Starscream and Shockwave that would likely kick things off. The space warrior would simply lay low and watch as events unfolded, remaining ever loyal to the Combaticons and whatever side Onslaught ultimately chose.

Vortex connected the last magneto strap to its coresponding clasp, sealing the make shift droid to the operation bed. He was rather quietly grateful that the quartermaster had been able to scrounge up another toy for his practice, he really had not been the same since the last one met with the unfortunate accident involving the desolvent fluids that ate through its processor. Still this one was very similar to the first, it had been programmed with a secret that Vortex needed to extract. The secret of his little game was to keep this thing alive long enough to extract said secret and as long as he wanted to inflict even more punishment. The first lasted a good mega cycle, and according to the sensor logs experenced extreme psycological distress and physical trauma. Vortex wished to double that time and triple those results before the next encounter with an Autobot prisoner.

Like most Combaticons, Vortex was a firm believer in Practice made Perfect. His motto was rather easy to remember and easy to involk every time he took hold of a sodering iron and pressed it against the unconcious droid. A simple twist of a wrench, a fusion of two wires here or there and the circuits that shut out pain readings from the body to the brain were disconnected from overall matrix. In other words, no matter how hard the target struggled, his or her pain was now a constant fact of the rest of their over all lives. He next began to surgically operate on the stasis lock circuitry... prevent the mechanism from passing out prolonged his own fun. Of course that would take a while to do properly, but he had plenty of time before they reached that dirt ball they were headed to anyways.

Bridge

As Onslaught continued to monitor the ship's sensors while still being lost in the midst of a sea of strategic possibilities, he noticed some familiar locations and signals beginning to register on the ship's navigation systems.

They were closing in on the Sol system.

The Combaticon Commander's circuits surged just a little. This was it. Their arrival here, one way or another, was going to alter the course of the Decepticon war machine. It felt odd to be standing right on the edge of what could be an all-out Decepticon civil war. Hopefully the alternatives they had in mind would avoid such a catastrophe, but he was sure there were any number of other Decepticons who were thinking the same thing about their own alternative plans.

Gladiator...you leave us too soon. And at too critical a juncture, Onslaught thought.

Bridge

Swindle wasn't one to brood on things, but the news of Megatrons death and the general cloud hanging over the bridge was getting to him. What had begun as simple plotting for profiting out of this had become a bout of deep worry.

I mean, are we going to lose the war now? If so, will the Autobots accept surrender? Would I be able to hide, or forced into some pointless suicide mission by the remaining leaders? Or will we too busy killing each other for the 'Bots to get involved at all? This is too heavy, I shouldn't have to be the one trying to puzzle it out!

Swindle began to wonder why he'd joined up in the first, why he'd let himself become a mostly-loyal Decepticon. The answer was a lot fuzzier now, after so many cycles, and with things so uncertain. Not that he could go back now. He was stuck as a Decepticon, even if the faction was sinking fast.

To distract himself, he looked back at the console before him. "Commander Onslaught, the Thanatos has made a successful exit from Hyperspace, close to Earth's satellite. Will I put us alongside her, or choose another location?"

Onslaught considered Swindle's query briefly.

"Right alongside, Swindle. I want to see how the first few orns in contact with our fellow Decepticons take shape before I jeopardize our advantage."

Coming in, they would have the Thanatos' impressive weapons array to back up their own. If they were, for some reason, walking in to a warzone, the Combaticon Commander was reasonably sure that they would be in the best position to capitalize on the situation if they were working in tandem with the Predacons. Depending on how events continued to take shape, that would probably be true for the forseeable future.
