Depths of Cybertron - Into the Abyss

Homeworld of the Transformers. Drained and ravaged by thousands of vorns of civil war, Cybertron is a mere barren husk of once beautiful and thriving cybernetic world. While recovered enough to allow Transformers to move on its surface once again, it is still plagued by ion storms and any Transformer unfortunate enough to venture there without energon supply of their own is certain to face a stasis lock.

Thunderwing rocketed down the tunnel at a rapid pace. With gravity and his engines working together he had a considerable lead over the rest of the team, as was his desire. He was best equipped to dive head long into whatever unknowns lay ahead. The Decepticon kept his sensors at maximum and his weapon systems at the ready as he plunged further down into Cybertron.

Finally he detected something up ahead, a mass of some sort. Sensor readings were growing increasingly fuzzy the further down they went, likely due to proximity to the planet’s core. He cut his engines and free fell the rest of the way down, transforming and landing with his legs bent before straightening. He then radioed the rest of his team. >>”I’ve located the bottom. I’ve activated a communication beacon. Slow your descent as you approach it and prepare to land.”<< The last thing he needed was one of his team slamming into the ground at high speed.

The Decepticon scientist began to study his surroundings, his natural curiosity taking over. This far into Cybertron and it vaguely resembled the inner workings of a Transformer. Certainly there were differences, and not just in scale, but he could see some resemblances to his own internal workings; conduits resembling hoses and piping and caves resembling internal structures. It was a pity they didn’t have more time to study.

Darkwing and Dreadwind came to landings next to each other behind Thunderwing. They two glanced at their surroundings, but not out of curiosity but out of a sense of dread.

“What do you think Dreadwind? If one of these tunnels collapsed would one of those creatures finish us off?”

Dreadwind shook his head. “I doubt even they come down this deep. No, we would be stuck down here forever, our corpses perfectly preserved forever, like a mausoleum no one would ever visit.”

Blackwind quickly transformed and rocketed after Thunderwing down deeper within the bowels of their dead planet. She hoped that with their gain from this mission Cybertron could be revitalized and then habitable once more.

She was roused from her thoughts by the communiqué from Thunderwing. The Seeker femme homed in on the communication beacon and, as recommended, slowed her decent. She was surprised that her sensor readings were fuzzy. With the bottom of the shaft in range, Blackwind cut her engines and transformed back to her slim robot form.

With her feet firmly on the floor the Aerospace Coordinator made her way to Thunderwing’s side. She noted that from the shaft there was now only one way to proceed. With some luck their sensors would pick up whatever it was they needed to locate.

“It would appear that this would be our only direction,” she gestured towards the large blackened tunnel ahead.

“Let’s not waste any more time.”

Blackwind ventured forward. The sooner they got what they came for the sooner she could get out of this suffocating place.

Having been warned in advance, Skullcruncher and Weirdwolf began to slow their free fall with the gravity manipulators most Decepticons carried within their bodyframe. Not much later the duo landed several meters away from the others that had already reached the bottom.

"Strange this place is." Weirdwolf spoke out, looking around himself. "Detailed, far more so than I thought it would be. Almost the core of the planet after all."

"Yeah well. You can come sightseeing all you want after we defeat the Autobots." Skullcruncher grunted before turning his gaze Thunderwing. "What's our next move commander?"

Thunderwing waited as the rest of his team arrived. He smiled slightly as Blackwind quickly took the lead. Between her actions and the anxieties of the other two fliers it seemed that some Decepticons did not enjoy being enclosed in such a way. He might have felt the same if he had not spent all of that time inside his personal bunker on a dying world. As it was it was still somewhat disconcerting to be so far beneath the surface, but he did not fear it as much as the others did. Blackwind at least was able to still display some confidence while Darkwing and Dreadwind simply shared thoughts of doom between the two of them.

Once Skullcruncher and Weirdwolf landed Thunderwing gave out his orders. “The Chamber is likely through this tunnel where Blackwind is leading the way. This close to the raw plasma energy sensors are liable to be useless so we will move cautiously and together.” He quickly strolled forward to catch up with Blackwind. “Do not rush ahead too eagerly. You’ve already suffered some damage, a stray bolt of plasma energy could only make things far worse.” He offered her a slight smile before continuing forward.

They arrived in a gigantic chamber, at the center of which lied a large dome. Raw bolts of energy flickered over the dome, with bright light and flashes coming from the lone entrance into it. A long path led towards it, with a dark pit surrounding the dome and the walkway. Thunderwing smiled. “There is out destination Decepticons, the Plasma Energy Chamber.”

The Decepticon scientist knelt down on the ground and produced the devices he had collected in his lab. They were small flat discs with control pads on one side of them. He activated each of them, the devices forming an empty energon cube attached to them. “These are reinforced energon cubes I created some time ago. They should be adequate to store the plasma energy until we can reach the surface. There is one for each of us to assure we return with a big enough sample, with room for some error. We will approach the chamber and attempt to catch one of those bolts in each cube.”

He stood up and looked them all over. “Be cautious. Armor and even my carapace will do little to protect you from a raw bolt of plasma energy. At best it will knock you temporarily offline. At worst a direct hit will scramble your cerebral circuits permanently and overload your spark, detonating it.” He handed out the cubes to each of them. “Now follow me.” Thunderwing strolled slowly, but confidently, towards the chamber, observing the bolts as they flickered over and out of the chamber.

It wasn't long after Blackwind landed when both Weirdwolf and Skullcruncher arrived in unison. Once the entire team was gathered Thunderwing gave out his orders, and before he could even say anything, Blackwind was already headed down the hall leading to the chamber. As it was the members of the group were not the type of Cons she was used to being around. She belonged amongst the elite, among the upper class sect.

The disdain for Shockwave and his appointing her to such a potentially deadly task was growing when she was brought out of her musing by the arrival of Thunderwing at her side. She returned his smile gratefully. The scientist was certainly an interesting mech. He was capable of surviving on a dead world by manipulating his own structure. This was truly ambitious feat. She did, however, wonder why his research and recommendations were never heeded. Perhaps once this mission was finally concluded she could speak to Thunderwing about what had occurred. Besides, she did have a desire to become more acquainted with this particular mech. After all, he would need someone familiar with the new Decepticon protocols in order to fit back in.

Blackwind’s optics focused on the large dome at the end of the walkway as Thunderwing announced their location. As the scientist prepared the storage devices the lithe femme took a tentative step onto the walkway. She stopped and looked back once Thunderwing began handing out the storage devices. She made her way back to the group and took the cube when it was offered.

With the storage device in hand, the Seeker femme tentatively kept in step with the much larger Commander. When they arrived at the end of the walkway Blackwind made her way to the right of Thunderwing, far enough to be sure she was not going to be a hindrance to any of the others.
After a moment of thinking she should reanalyze her existence, she finally readied herself for her task. Lifting up the cube she waited as one of the plasma energy bolts was emitted from the top of the chamber and careened down toward her. She quickly averted her optics as the energy was pulled into the cube, trapping it for future study.

With the hum of the energy growing lower, Blackwind finally looked down at the cube in her hands. It was thrilling to be holding what could possibly be the end to this Primus forsaken war. A moment went by before she finally refocused her attention on the others and their progress. The alluring Seeker made her back toward the entrance at a brisk pace. Once there she let out a relieved sigh and placed the cube on the floor where they all had initially gathered.
Her attention was quickly brought to the form of Thunderwing as the scientist attempted to capture another sample. As she began to turn her focus on the other members of the group a stray plasma bolt was emitted and rocketed directed at her. With her attention fixated on the others, Blackwind was oblivious to what was headed toward her.

The femme had no idea what hit her, one moment she was watching the others and the next she was screaming in absolute agony. For the briefest of moments she caught sight of Thunderwing before her systems began to shut down one by one until there was only darkness.

At least Shockwave provided me a device to protect myself from the plasma surge last time I was here. And now you want us to catch those bolts with risk of being deactivated. Skullcruncher thought as Thunderwing explained what he had in mind. Too bad that device could take just that one surge.

"Weirdwolf?" Skullcruncher spoke up as the tracker returned from the chamber with his cube already filled. "Do me a favor and fill a cube or two for me?"

Weirdwolf turned to look at his larger comrade, grinning devilishly. "Too slow are we? Save you I shall this time. A favor you will owe to Weirdwolf."

"Sure. Favor for favor. I can deal with that." Skullcruncher grunted and reached to grab the full cube from Weirdwolf who in turn picked an empty one and dashed back into the chamber. With series of fancy moves, the tracker caught another bolt of plasma with little trouble into the cube he was holding. Only few astroseconds later, Weirdwolf was already back in safety. "Easy enough that was, I-"

A scream of pure agony from Blackwind interrupted Weirdwolf, who turned quickly on his feet to see what was happened. Blackwind was down, her body smoldering from a hit from a plasma bolt. "Not again, cannot she after herself look at all?"

Skullcruncher just shook his head as a reply to his partner in crime. Neither moved to help, it would probably resulted in just more Decepticons being injured. Given Thunderwing was already so close to her, they left the enigmatic scientist play a hero.

Thunderwing carefully lead the way towards the plasma chamber. He took time to study the rippling bolts of energy, trying to find a pattern in their motion. He wanted to be able to catch a bolt quickly and safely in the cube rather then to hold it out and count on luck that a bolt would strike it rather then himself. It didn’t take too long for the scientist to find the pattern and collect a bolt inside of the cube.

The cube pulsated with a pink glow, brighter then just standard energon. Occasionally a ripple of various colors would pass through it, the plasma energy inside only just contained by his reinforced cube generator. Thunderwing stared at the cube as he backed away from the chamber. He hoped there would be some of it left after Shockwave’s experiments so that he could examine it.

Darkwing and Dreadwind reluctantly took up their cubes and crept towards the chamber. They didn’t need to exchange words to know what the other was thinking. This was going to be it, killed by a stray plasma bolt and left to rust at the core of Cybertron. They walked up to the chamber next to each other and held out the cubes in their arms as far as they could reach, their heads turned away from the inevitable doom that awaited them.

Fortunately for them both the bolts struck the cubes. It took a moment for either of them to realize what had happened. Darkwing was the first to look. He stood dumbfounded for a moment before quickly moving away from the chamber. Dreadwind waited for another moment before looking and quickly followed.

“You could have told me it had worked rather then just leave me there!” He snapped at Darkwing. “I should have known you would leave me to die.”

Darkwing shrugged his shoulders. “Survival of the fittest.”

Everyone’s attention was quickly drawn by the screams from Blackwind. The plasma energy rolled over her and she collapsed in a smoking heap at their feet.

“I knew it! I knew someone was going to die on this mission!” Dreadwind shouted.

Thunderwing wasted no time in moving towards her. His sensors picked up her spark still functioning inside of her, but it looked like several other critical systems had been heavily damaged or destroyed. She would need immediate repairs if she were to survive.

“Darkwing, Dreadwind, take my and Blackwind’s cubes. You two will take point as we move back to the surface. Use your combined mode if necessary, but we are flying to the surface. The mission is complete and I see no reason to prolong it and risk further injuries when it is unnecessary. Blast us a clear path if necessary.” He carefully scooped up the wounded femme. “I will carry Blackwind and follow with Weirdwolf and Skullcruncher.” Holding the seeker tightly but carefully he walked out of the room and back into the tunnels, the two other fliers following quickly behind.

Thunderwing produced a hose from his right arm as they walked, attaching it to an input valve on Blackwind’s stomach. He began pumping energon directly into her system, using his own systems to circulate it to her spark and other critical systems. It wouldn’t be enough to get her functional, but it would maintain her in a sort of stasis. Hopefully that would be enough. He did not want to lose someone he found so valuable, both to the empire and himself.

Darkwing and Dreadwind stowed the cubes in their cockpits before transforming, this time combining into their superjet mode. Neither of them was particularly fond of the combination, Darkwing in particular, but he kept his mouth shut. He didn’t feel that complaints would be welcome at this time. They both also had to admit that the combined mode was more powerful and getting to the surface more quickly sounded good to them. The combined fliers blasted off, heading up the tunnel they had used before.

Thunderwing unfolded his wings, giving him additional maneuverability and thrust for the flight, this time with the added weight of Blackwind. His alternate mode’s engines roared to life on his back and he lifted off, flying after Darkwing and Dreadwind.

Giving each other a puzzled glance over the actions of Thunderwing, the two Decepticons left behind by their faster comrades finished what they had come for. Weirdwolf loaded the cubes left behind by Blackwind and Thunderwing on Skullcruncher's arms before grabbing his own two cubes.

"You think they bother to wait for us?" Skullcruncher asked, knowing full well that neither of the two could fly any faster than 300 mph in their robot modes - speed significantly slower than that of Thunderwing's even with the scientist carrying Blackwind.

"By following only learn we can." Weirdwolf said and turned his gaze upwards and activating the thrusters in his feet.

"Hrmph. No reason to waste time down here I suppose." Skullcruncher grunted and launched himself into the air after his only real friend within Decepticon ranks.

Thunderwing trailed behind the combined form of Darkwing and Dreadwind, Blackwind still cradled in his arms. From what little he knew of the two other fliers he had assumed they would take a decent lead now. He hoped that there firepower was increased in this mode. He wanted to be able to blast or smash through any obstacles in their way.

He turned his scans back towards Weirdwolf and Skullcruncher who seemed to be delaying for some reason. He wasn’t sure what the two warriors had to discuss, and Darkwing and Dreadwind had taken on the extra cubes as he had ordered. The fact that they were slower in the air then the rest of them meant they should have scrambled immediately to join them. Speed was of the essence now, for Blackwind’s sake and for the stability of the samples.

With that his thoughts turned to Blackwind. She seemed to be stable enough for now. His fuel was still flowing into her and circulating through her systems. It was enough to keep her mental circuits functioning. That would be enough to keep her memory active and from being wiped out. Hopefully it would be enough to keep her cognitive functions working on an unconscious level. Still he would need to get her to a repair facility as soon as possible to make sure she could regain full functionality. He carefully brushed some scorched metal away off of her face.

Darkwing and Dreadwind opened fire, blasting through some debris and walls and clearing out an opening for the rest of them to follow. The Decepticons roared through the openings the combined fliers made. They poured more firepower ahead of them and Thunderwing dodged the debris. At least with one last blast at a weakened portion of the surface blew open a hole revealing the dark sky above sprinkled with stars.

Darkwing and Dreadwind flew out of the opening, breaking apart into their separate vehicle modes. Thunderwing followed shortly thereafter. >>”Darkwing, Dreadwind, Skullcruncher, Weirdwolf, once you’ve reached the surface head for the Tower. Deliver the cubes to Shockwave’s laboratory. I will take Blackwind for repairs. You may all go to recharge and repair whatever damage you might have taken.”<<
