That Bot wrote:To answer a question from the first post:
Slug is Slag. It's his new designation, not a new character. He goes by it in FOC and IDW. "Slag" is an offensive word in British English and Hasbro is trying to be more conscious of their international markets.
Slog is Sludge. I'm not sure why they changed his name.
Strafe is Swoop. Dunno why they gave him a completely different guy's name but he fills the role of "pterasaur dinobot".
That Bot wrote:I essentially view them by family. Grimlock is a large theropod. Usually a t-rex, but sometimes liberties are taken. Swoop is a pterasaur of some kind. Sludge is a sauropod. Until we get more than one dinobot in a single continuity that meets these specifications, I think it's safe to say they're essentially the same thing.
That Bot wrote:You have a point. But it seems that Slog is meant to be the Bayverse incarnation of Sludge, and Strafe of Swoop, rather than being, respectively, a completely new character and a dinobot-ized version of an obscure G1 dude. But I don't know honestly. Strafe does nothing to make him stand out personality-wise in the film and Slog, of course, doesn't exist, so who can really say?

I find the SDCC G1 deco set to be very telling that these are a version of those G1 characters.
