Do voice actors get respect?

Postby Ericus Prime » Thu May 31, 2007 4:58 pm

I've been thinking about something. Do voice actors get enough respect in the entertainment world? I think that guys like Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, and Scott Mcneil, guys that do so much probably don't get enough recognition or respect. What do you guys think?

Sadly, yes. People have forgotten about the men and women that brought their childhood cartoons to life.

Japanese voice actors get plenty respect. The world of voice acting is being taken so much more serious over there.

That's because their anime industry is about the same as the American Movie industry. Whereas American's see cartoons as a kid's thing, Japanese have an anime for everyone.

But no, voice actors don't get much notice in America. Non even Frank Welker, Peter Cullen, or Scott McNeil.

I generally have to explain to people where they might've heard a voice before, and a lot of times, they come up blank. Even Cullen, Welker, and especially McNeil. (Given that I can't think of a single thing he's done that isn't intended or SEEN as intended for kids.)

unfortunately they dont, but Thats why there are conventions like Botcon, Comicon, and E3 where they can get the adoration of the people that count US. also the people who Direct these Voice actors don't get enough recognition. I think the main reason for the lack of respect is, most the Animated stuff on the big screen is aimed at kids and while it might not be insulting to any adults intelligence it does nothing to challenge it as well. Also Videogame cutscense don't get enough attention, MGS had one of best stories of any medium But you rarely hear about it from anyone else outside of Video Game Community I would love if there was a show on television that would dedicate a hour to showing all the Cinema sceens from one game from beginning to end.

BAD idea. And for two good reasons: One: You even play Xenosaga? Half the game (The game is about 80 hours total) is cutscenes. They're like ten minutes long!

Two: Then there's games where playing it a second time might unlock a different cutscenes. Then there's games with no FMV at all, which seem to be very common nowadays.

Well there's one easy solution to this problem and I'm sure all agree with me on this:

Stop making animation aimed at kids and start making animation geared torwards teens and adults that ISN'T a Comedy.

I generally give higher regards to Voice Actors than regular actors due to them mostly being just normal nice guys rather than being big headed jsrks.

Good luck getting anyone to take it seriously.

It's a cartoon, and in America, cartoons = kids stuff. Even if you make it a dark, scary show, it'll get burned for attempting to scare kids. Despite the fact that it wasn't aimed at kids.

The Show could be a two parter or how ever long I did play Xenosaga the cutscenes in total where under 6 hours long. I beat Xenosaga in just over 44 hours of play time. As far as diff scense go leave to the Directors to pick the best scenes as for for games with In game cut-scenes they dont make the grade, unless the Voice acting is top-notch.

Good point, South park taught us this a long time ago.

I'm not talking about somthing dark and scary, I'm just tlking about a show that would be a bit more mature.

Somthing along the lines of Mainframe quality shows, thats the type of thing I want to see on screen.

Voice actors get plenty of respect in certain circles. Fans and fellow actors notice them and admire their work. Frank Welker is very well known in the entertainment industry, I've seen interviews on voice acting and he's come up just randomly like he needs no introduction.

Granted they don't get recognition from people in public because their faces aren't well known. Considering what many screen actors go through, this could be a blessing. At conventions they attend, it's a different story.
