Actually, by not naming him Ultra Magnus, that shows they don't want to do that. Dino and Q were suppose to be Mirage and Wheeljack. It's lame the toys will still be referred to as such.

They certainly couldn't have called Sentinel, Nemesis Prime, that would have been too obvious.
They do have some concern, not as much as other adaptations, but sentinel being magnus would have been worse.

well said.

and just because they don't look like boxes running around doesn't make them ugly. get over it.

anyone else notice that there were nods to two G1 story lines in the movie?

and what.. the movie universe can't be it's own universe? it HAS to be the G1 universe?

they try to use the names that we know because that's what the fans want. and i guess you missed all of the characters that they did well..

i love G1 as much as the next guy.. but there's already a G1.. this can't be something new, for new fans? i thought sentinel prime was a great choice for the movie. he's a character that i've certainly never cared for. and now he's got a major role and is in the spotlight. i think it's great. bringing new life to an old name.

Hhmm. Here's a clean cut case of someone putting another person's argument in my mouth. where the hell did i mention G1??? I'm glad you're a G1 fan, many of us are. Actually, I'll be a good sport and answer your questions since you seem to be a person of assumptions:

"anyone else notice that there were nods to two G1 story lines in the movie?" Sorry. I didn't see it yet. Give me a few hours.

"and what.. the movie universe can't be it's own universe?" Absolutely.

"it HAS to be the G1 universe?" No, but again, who mentioned G1?

"and i guess you missed all of the characters that they did well.." You mean Mikaela, right? lol

"i love G1 as much as the next guy.. but there's already a G1.. this can't be something new, for new fans?" Sure! But, uh...who mentioned G1? I respect the movie-verse as something new and for what it's done for the franchise as a whole but I still think the movie designs are fugly. If you are tired of hearing that then YOU get over it.

I guess I'd prefer they use new names, if they're completely different/new characters. :-?

I'd love for them to have brought in Ultra Magnus as a fellow good guy so Prime had another heavy hitter to go with his bunch of cars. May be he can join for 4th film.

Soo, not much for the comics, then? You know, the one where Magnus betrayed and imprisoned Prime and his crew because he believed Shockwave was interested in the good of all Cybertronians?

Also, wasn't Ultra Magnus hungry for the Matrix in Robots in Disguise? He forced Optimus to merge with him hoping to be able to absorb the power of the Matrix, but he ended up having equal control over their combined form. And then he barely gave a slag about the Autobots in addition. Pretty much a jerk.

Yeah, Magnus has had his flaws over the years.

I'll give you mad props for making the attempt but honestly, I'd have a better chance of making my ex-mother-in-law see reason than what you'll have convincing most of the folks here that the Movieverse does not have to follow the same course as G1. Primus could come falling out of the sky with sparks flying out of his a** and decree that the Moviverse was indeed separate and folks still wouldn't believe it.

Yeah, I was slightly disappointed that the movie didn't follow the novel/original screenplay to the letter and that Mirage and Wheeljack were renamed but I got over it real quick. I'm in my late 30's, I grew up with Transformers from the very beginning and by all rights I should have more basis to complain than a lot of folks here but, unlike many, I can embrace and enjoy the changes and just roll with it. It's a toy brand, it's a hobby, it's entertainment and if folks are taking it THAT seriously, they need to step back and rethink their hobby.
I'm actually glad that the Movies have only lingering hints/remnants of G1 because that means it's something new and fresh for my own kids but has just enough of the old elements that my boys see my excitement and ask about it and that leaves an opening for yet another TF history lesson from dear old dad about the characters of 20+ years ago. My 12 year old can identify and appreciate TF's from before he was even born and that interest would not have been there if this stuff had all just stayed the same so you hard core complainers might want to lighten up and take a cue from a family with 2 generations of collectors.

Now as for the name change from Magnus to Sentinel...from a "don't piss off the finicky fan-base" perspective I think they did the right thing. There was already so much pressure to make up for the shortcomings of RotF that they really needed to watch what they were doing with this one so I commend their choice in that respect. Did they HAVE to do it? No they didn't and rather than the populace bitching about what may or may not have been just be thankful that you got the choice you did because, as far as I'm concerned, the fandom really doesn't deserve it and certainly wasn't owed anything. Not these films, not the changes that were made, none of it and the gratitude that IS shown by the fandom quite frankly sucks. I won't be the least bit surprised if no one else picks up the franchise further down the road because I can't think of anyone else who would want to put up with the b.s. that comes with dealing with the Transformers fan-base.

My guess is initially Ultra magnus was chosen for DOTM. Due to his rival brother hood with optimus prime in RID. and due to Ultra Magnus being the supreme autobot leader/teacher in the animated cartoon/toy line.

Personally Ultra magnus from Rid or Animated would have never acted like sentinel prime in the DOTM movie.

Rid ultra magnus may have been optimus prime's rival in the Rid cartoon. but Rid ultra magnus would have never went to the extreme by killing any autobots nor kill any humans on earth. nor switch sides & join the bad guys permanently.

Animated Ultra magnus was never a evil robot.

ANOTHER THING,I don't think a fire truck alt mode would have suited the ultra magnus character. as being a fire truck is optimus prime's thing in RID,Cybertron & animated.

I'll admit my biggest beef about the DOTM Sentinel prime toy were the 85% all red color.

I probably would have like ultra magnus's color scheme on the dotm sentintel prime toys. as his colors would have been various colors & just a more eye pleasing colors. like white, blue, red. I'll admit as far as being realistically colored it would have failed. as sentinel prime's red color is more realistically colored for that fire truck.

Since this is in a way a thread about Sentinel Prime, I'd like to throw in this chart;

Turncoats In The TF Movies

Movie #1
*None

ROTF
*Jetfire - Autobots

DOTM
*Sentinel Prime - Decepticons(ish)

Anyone notice a pattern? So if they're going to proceed with a 4th installment, my guess is that there will be at least one Decepticon that will go Autobot or it will be like the 1st one; no turncoats at all.

Don't forget about Wheelie in ROTF. So.... it was time for an autobot to switch sides.

the twins' vehicle modes appear at the very rear of the initial Autobot convoy for a couple of seconds, and thats it.

That does not make sense. So the movie CGI was completed way in advance?

Whatever the case, I would have been fine with Ultra Magnus. It would have been interesting.

That is my question. I've always been under the impression test screenings are done when the film is close to completion but not so close that changes can't be done. As we've seen in video, the security guard on the set in Chicago (8/27/10) states to the crowd that the fire truck parked behind him is Sentinel Prime. That's almost a year ago. As they say during congressional hearings, who knew what, and when did they know it?

Yeah, I agree. I heard that Bay is going to be responsible for the x-men reboot. Wolverine will shoot lasers out of his eyes and cyclops has a metal skeleton. Professor X has blue fur and is acrobatic. You know...something new for the fans. :)

If they're doing something new for new fans then why use old names?

Who knows when they decided? There have been so many character changes during the course of these movies: Prowl (and Soundwave) to Barricade, Devastator to Brawl, Sentinel Prime to Ultra Magnus to Sentinel Prime, and I'm sure there's more. The movie crew can never make up its mind on names. Sentinel Prime was already being discussed before the first movie, and was even mentioned in the second, so there had to be some argument over the past several years on what to do with him:
"He's SENTINEL PRIME We haven't used him but we've had him on hand for like four years."
"No, he's ULTRA MAGNUS. The fans want an Ultra Magnus to be Optimus's brother."
"I let you make Devastator last time, so it's MY turn to make a character."
"Nuh uh, you got to have Soundwave too, so I get to name another one too."
