According to the blog, it was the test screening that drove the change to Sentinel Prime. However we have to wonder if Hasbro had a say in this change. Ultra Magnus has always been a heroic character and doesn't match the role that Sentinel Prime plays in DOTM.

The blog also states that they re-used the Ultra Magnus head as what the Apollo 11 astronauts step on and uncover as they explore the ship.

That does not make sense. So the movie CGI was completed way in advance?

Whatever the case, I would have been fine with Ultra Magnus. It would have been interesting.

That is my question. I've always been under the impression test screenings are done when the film is close to completion but not so close that changes can't be done. As we've seen in video, the security guard on the set in Chicago (8/27/10) states to the crowd that the fire truck parked behind him is Sentinel Prime. That's almost a year ago. As they say during congressional hearings, who knew what, and when did they know it?

Turncoats In The TF Movies

Movie #1
*None

ROTF
*Jetfire - Autobots

DOTM
*Sentinel Prime - Decepticons(ish)

Anyone notice a pattern? So if they're going to proceed with a 4th installment, my guess is that there will be at least one Decepticon that will go Autobot or it will be like the 1st one; no turncoats at all.

Don't forget Wheelie in ROTF.

^Oh, never mind then.

Whoops, forgot all about him.

This is actually old news. I believe memeber albershide posted this up some time last year. I remember seeing the exact same photo of the screen casting with Ultra Magnus. I'll see if i can find it..

No wonder SP's transform mode looked similar to that of TFA version.

Actually, by not naming him Ultra Magnus, that shows they don't want to do that. Dino and Q were suppose to be Mirage and Wheeljack. It's lame the toys will still be referred to as such.

They certainly couldn't have called Sentinel, Nemesis Prime, that would have been too obvious.
They do have some concern, not as much as other adaptations, but sentinel being magnus would have been worse.

well said.

and just because they don't look like boxes running around doesn't make them ugly. get over it.

anyone else notice that there were nods to two G1 story lines in the movie?

and what.. the movie universe can't be it's own universe? it HAS to be the G1 universe?

they try to use the names that we know because that's what the fans want. and i guess you missed all of the characters that they did well..

i love G1 as much as the next guy.. but there's already a G1.. this can't be something new, for new fans? i thought sentinel prime was a great choice for the movie. he's a character that i've certainly never cared for. and now he's got a major role and is in the spotlight. i think it's great. bringing new life to an old name.

Yeah, I agree. I heard that Bay is going to be responsible for the x-men reboot. Wolverine will shoot lasers out of his eyes and cyclops has a metal skeleton. Professor X has blue fur and is acrobatic. You know...something new for the fans. :)

If they're doing something new for new fans then why use old names?

Didn't the twins switch sides in the first flick? maybe I'm remembering wrong. Been a while since I played it.

You're thinking of the ROTF prequel comic, and I believe it was actually a less than clever facade.

Who knows when they decided? There have been so many character changes during the course of these movies: Prowl (and Soundwave) to Barricade, Devastator to Brawl, Sentinel Prime to Ultra Magnus to Sentinel Prime, and I'm sure there's more. The movie crew can never make up its mind on names. Sentinel Prime was already being discussed before the first movie, and was even mentioned in the second, so there had to be some argument over the past several years on what to do with him:
"He's SENTINEL PRIME We haven't used him but we've had him on hand for like four years."
"No, he's ULTRA MAGNUS. The fans want an Ultra Magnus to be Optimus's brother."
"I let you make Devastator last time, so it's MY turn to make a character."
"Nuh uh, you got to have Soundwave too, so I get to name another one too."
