Dreamwave??

Ok...I get the part where Dreamwave comics went under, but I'm curious why some people think its taboo to talk about them. Why are people shying away from talking about them? Honestly, Dreamwave produce some of the best transformers comics to date (art-wise). Remember, Don, guidi, and a sprew of other artists made their name through them. So, I'm curious. Can someone enlighten me as to why we're not supposed to talk about them. I had a short relapse in comics and year and when I came back, my transformers comics stopped. Why? Someone tell me why. I want to know! I detail. Thank you

I didn't know it was taboo. I'm not really into comics at all these days (and haven't been since I was in middle school many years ago, and even then I wasn't reading TF comics), but I did really enjoy their take on Beast Wars that they did for Botcon etc. I really wanted to see that story continued.

I like what they did (or at least what I've seen of what they did) much better than IDW, but I'm kinda on the anti-IDW side of things I guess, if only because they seem to humanize the characters far too much (though understandably given the fact that they have to make stories compelling enough to last hundreds of issues so it's par for the course with comics I guess).

Isn't it more along the lines of Pat Lee being a pariah?

Outcast, you'll hear that especially in Indian communities. :-B

Does it have something to do with Matt Moylan's Dream-Slaves articles?

Where'd you get the idea that the subject was "taboo"?

It's not taboo, just really old news. I enjoyed most of their stories especially their War Within, which at the time was the first look into Pre-G1 mythos that the fandom really had. But due to egos, and money (or lack thereof) they folded like origami.

Most long time fans were about when all this went down and there were discussions abound during the time. But now there's very little to talk about that cannot be found on TFWiki, so what's the point?

I just thought it was. Cuz sometimes someone brought up Dreamwave, another person post something like, "lets not talk about them!" And lots of things like "oh, Dreamwave?" I'm not anti-IDW or anything, but their first impression of transformers when they took the helm kind of turned me away. Too human-centric and the art was plain. Background has very little details and the robots were kind of plain. I guess the new stuff is getting better (with Don, Guidi, wildman, etc). Hopefully it gets better. I'll give them a second chance. I mean, I love all that is transformers and the comics are what makes the character come alive.

You'd be better off discussing it in the Cartoon and Comic forum.

Yeah, DreamWave had really good products when it came to comic lines, but when they went under it seems the quality went with them. Until Regeneration One, iDW produced mostly TP. Simple, non-involving stories and sub-standard art plagued the many TF comics they produce. After ReGen started, I tried to get into MTMTE and even RiD, but the art just turned me off completely. Too bad, I was interested in the stories. But I can't enjoy something I can barely look at. And yeah, it's Pat Lee's fault. he was in charge of DW and was very greedy, ripping off everyone else involved.

That's too bad. I actually like their take on the entire comic line. Pat Lee. I actually met the guy a few times. Cool guy. But you know, his art style is spot on transformers. Hopefully, idw can hire him as an artist with the books. Just with the arts. I'd like to see these companies try and forgot about the past and bring together great transformers talents. Come on, he guy brought back transformers for the new generations. He has talent

I actually liked that they tried to play the human angle...I just didn't like how they played it. It was a bit tedious having a Transformers comic where most of the Transformers were mindless slaves to the human villain who was prowling the Earth to reclaim their bodies. It defeated the purpose of having sentient alien robots.

However, it did make an effectively satirical allegory regarding the adult collectors that were the comic's target audience...

Never been into the comics, but one thing I can say about the Dreamwave comics is that the art style was...off. Skewy perspectives, legs deforming extensively (come on! This isn't the G1 cartoon! Do what Gundam did and make the hip panels articulated so their pelvises aren't one solid block for Primus's sake!) mega foreshortening mistakes, way too...rounded, just...ugly. It looks like they tried and failed to make it into a manga.

I would disagree on that: War Within was, in my opinion, excellent. Shame the last issues were never released.

Dreamwave had a few interesting ideas, mostly in the War Within comics, but otherwise was fairly overrated, IMO. In retrospect the artwork was nowhere near as good as everyone thought it was at the time. I think the modern coloring on it made it look better then it was, especially compared to the older style of the previous Marvel books. The writing outside of War Within eventually devolved into a convoluted mess of plot holes, continuity errors and attempts to cash in on nostalgia. The fact that Pat Lee essentially stole money from people and even took credit for other artists' work is just icing on the cake, and basically ensures he'll never work on a TF book again.

To the opening post, it isn't really taboo to talk about, but it is a bit played out now. The fact that so many writers and artists were cheated and are still bitter about it does help lend a negative connotation to it.
