Ever had to do any manual surgery on yoru figures?

Postby DvDqNoC » Fri Jul 13, 2007 8:14 pm

Well my Movie Deluxe Jazz, I noticed, had a problem where one of its knees came out more than the other. It really annoyed me because when it stood, it stood slanted. So I personally unscrewed the leg that came out less and clipped off a piece of excess plastic that was in the knee part. Now my Jazz stands perfectly even!

Also, my Movie Deluxe Brawl had a paint problem on the left (his right) tire thing on his shoulder. There was a small thing of green paint on the black tire (probably from the paint that was used to color his body). So I took a black sharpie and colored over the green. There is a slight difference in the black of the original tire and the sharpie, but its a lot less noticeable that a dab of green paint would be.

I did these things instead of returning the toys because its a lot less work, saves gas money, and saves embarrassment (I'm a little older than the usual 'toy playing' age, atleast in my opinion).

Anyone else had to do some manual surgery on their toys?

I do surgery on almost all my toys...cause I am always looking for that extra inch of articulation. I just don't understand certain toys where they could have saved on plastic if they'd leave certain parts out or smaller or shorter. I usually use just a pocket knife and cut or shave off the plastic...And the most common surgery I do is shaving off plastic pieces that lock on to a ball joint like the ankles etc so they can be posed more realistically.

My Classics Jetfire came with a faulty spring in one side of the jet pack. Opened it up placed the catch side of the spring in a small amount of super glue and set it in place. After drying the gun now properly springs out of the pack like it should without the spring slipping.

Fixed Megatron's feet from the Prime vs Megatron 2 pack they were assembled backwards.

i just in fact finished some manual surgery on my movie megatron. I took the spring from the fusion cannon and switched it to the claw arm so now the fusion cannon stays out when i slide it and the rocket claw shoots out now.

Motto: ""Not good enough for G1!""
I bought one of the recent G1 Bumblebee keychains, took an Exacto knife, & removed the 'hoop' on the bumper that connected to the chain... Pulled out a black sharpie, & made the bumper all black again... Now you can barely tell it was originally a keychain!

I've also taken a red Sharpie to G1 Jetfire's nosecone (it's not horribly noticeable, unless you're up close).

I've disassembled my Alt. Prowl's legs & I did the "Leg Swap" on him to make him look more "G1"...

Oh, and I've been forced to remove an orange plug from a Masterpiece Megatron, using a blow drier, knife, & a pair of needle-nosed pliers...

So, while I've not had to correct mistakes, I have preformed "elective surgery" to a few figures...

He's assembled wrong. You have to un-pin his forearm cuffs.

BIB Ultra Magnus is a famous case, but I had a G1 reissue Dirge that had the air vents on his legs all messed up, one was all the way in his leg and the other was placed backwards. Opened him up and placed both of them in correctly.

Energon Prowl. On both the regular and Swat versions I've fiddled with the legs so that the screws ended up facing the other way. It means that the screws would now show more obviously on the arms in shirt mode, but I display the regular one on his own in bot mode and the Swat one powerlinxed to Checkpoint as pants so for me it's a fairly major improvement.

I had to do this one too. I fiddle with some figures or remove parts if I feel no need for them. I never permanently alter something though. BW Dinobot has his face armor removed, BW Rhinox has his face armor switched to the opposite sides so they close behind his head and look better. He also had to have his shoulder pieces switched too. I removed Destructicon Scourge's overly large arm cannon to allow better arm articulation. I also switched the shoulders on Alternators Camshaft so that the paint detail shows. Nothing too fancy just easy fixes that don't require cutting.

I did that with Camshaft too.

It was surprisingly difficult to do. Those joints were very tight.

Aside from the Alt. Prowl leg switch, I would have to say my Energon Highwire/Kicker pack has had the most surgery. It seems they must have installed the autobot crystal in Highwire's chest wrong, since the backing of it with the slot tracks that the head uses to slip down were not aligned properly. That took about 90 minutes of open spark surgery to correct, since the piece could not be removed, it had to be remolded into proper shape. But when his chest is pulled apart, his waist and arms come out, not to mention that theres a screw buried in plastic that holds him together inside. It was touch and go for a while there, but the little bugger pulled through, working better then ever. :D

I have had to touch up the paint on a few transformers, file down some rough edges, use some clear nail polish on some joints, and even swap some legs/panels around.

The only figure I have had to do anything close to surgery on was my MP02 Magnus (and event hat didnt fully fix him).

I've been lucky.
