Sweet lord, that Soundwave looks amazing, enough to bring me out of my lurker shell and actually post for once. Fans have been asking for this since MP1. And the news on the additional cassette is great news (though BBTS's 31% markup is complete crap, but this is why I won't buy from them anyways). I'm really hoping Takara isn't going to gauge their customers and release a different cassette or pair with every possible repaint they can muster up.

My only concern is the scale, if he's not at least as tall as Starscream then I'll be sorely disappointed. I'm still not happy with the MP scale change starting with MP10. :BANG_HEAD: Seeing Sideswipe and knowing he won't at least be as tall as MP9 Hot Rod made my decision to not buy him pretty easy.

I think still going to wait for the inevitable Hasbro release of Soundwave, that way I'm pretty much guaranteed I'll get most all of the accessories and all the cassettes in one purchase and he'll be much cheaper.

It seems MP Sideswipe doesn't look too out of scale with the other deluxe Classics figs. I think I'll pass on Red Alert (since I actually have his Generations fig) and go for MP Sideswipe and the inevitable Sunstreaker. I love Lamborghini's, so Sideswipe is a no-brainer.

Soundwave looks promising. Awesome looking proportions, details and sculpting in both modes, and his head looks fantastic. The fact that the fig is pictured with the prototypes of Rumble/Frenzy, Ratbat and Ravage give me hope of at least a multi-pack in the future. Because I certainly won't be buying any repaints (not even Soundblaster) just for another cassette bot.

Hate the fact that his energon cube is an Amazon.jp exclusive, though.

Didn't notice the fake wheels. That's good attention to detail.

And it really cuts to the heart of why this mold can't be shared by Sunstreaker and Breakdown as in the Classics line. An MP should go the extra mile to be like the characters they represent - adding the wheels on Red really show this. A little detail in the right place. You can't just slap a new head on and call it a day like in Classics. That's great for a $20 toy, but a $120 toy? No thank you.

I don't see that. MP10 stands the same size as Rodimus, which is barely an inch taller than Hot Rod himself. Based on the size comparison picture between Sideswipe only comes to his waist. Sideswipe should be just as tall as Hot Rod. Sideswipe looks like a mini-spy.

Unfortunately new new MP scale has completely screwed early MP collectors out of having a consistent and accurate series collection.

Ohohoho, YES. This is amazing. Has me all super excited for the MP line again. I hope all those accessories are included, aside from the minions. And I hope when the minions come out they cost less than Sideswipe. I NEED RAVAGE.

WildcatOn3 wrote:According to BigBadToyStore, "The addition of Lazorbeak to the MP-13 has increased costs by 31%." Is that a **** joke?!

lol, I think it's just a silly excuse for "Oh crap these things cost more than we expected, we can't afford to sell them for such a low price". But it's an okay price for a figure I'm going to really, really love. So perhaps I will make this happen after all. Also, it's a good thing I'm not interested in many 3rd Party offerings this year beyond Green Giant. It's time for official toys to take the spotlight. 8)

Well, unfortunately they're also going for alt-mode scale, which makes it hard to have consistency in bot modes. It makes perfect sense that Hot Rod and Sideswipe should be the same height it bot mode, but since Hot Rod was also designed to be Rodimus Prime and making Sideswipe any bigger would make a huge Lamborghini, it's the best they can do. Inconsistencies in scale are just something we have to live with as Transformers fans. Especially considering the sizes of characters in the cartoon varied from episode to episode and sometimes even scene to scene...and then there's the whole mass-shifting issue and, well...yeah.

Rodimus was designed to be primarily Rodimus Prime because in Japan they didn't get the Movie until years after Headmasters. No Movie first, less attachment to Hot Rod. The Hot Rod aspects are secondary as they were making the 2010 leader in 2010. That's why he didn't come with Offshoot originally, he was never a Targetmaster over there! Sideswipe is to scale with Optimus in both bot and alt modes.

And as an MP collector for nearly a decade, the "new" scale doesn't bother me much as it started with MP-03 Starscream and continued with Grimlock and the Seekers and so forth. So it's not that 90% of the series is out of scale, it's that the original MP Convoy and MP-05 Megatron (and Ultra Magnus if anyone cares) are huge. Takara has reimagined the Masterpiece line into an all encompassing G1 celebration and while these seem like their first steps in that direction, it's the path they've been on all along!

I'm sure that due to their lack of size they won't be labelled such, but rather a MP-13n side.

You don't consider this Laserbeak a masterpiece? It's probably the best version of the character ever. I hope we get a better look at Ravage and Frumble soon.

Great looking masterpiece Laserbeak. Too bad they couldn't make the canons on his boosters a little longer.

he won't be.. the scale really changed with grimlock and Rodimus.. if you read the post above.. they explain it pretty well.like zodconvoy said (which i believe is one of the best posts in this entire thread) the hot rod/rodimus toy was supposed to be mainly for rodimus prime. it wouldn't make any sense for sideswipe to be as tall as him.

plus, if we want all of the autobot cars.. i'd rather them stick with this scale. they'll be cheaper, and we can get more of them quicker.

mp01-04 was just entirely too large. it really makes having any of the larger figures impossible. with this scale we MAY* be able to get a devastator, or an omega supreme.. while still having it be in scale and reasonably priced.

i personally wouldn't mind replacing my entire generation/classics collection with masterpiece figures. because you know that each mold for each character will be as close to screen accurate as possible.

having red alert is a good example.. with the fake wheels on his shoulders.. same mold, and it's something they easily could've skipped, but they didn't..

I don't know, I'm not feeling sideswipe. If this is a MP this needs to be uber faithful to the original character design.

G1 Sideswipe in bot form does not have a flat chest like that, the chest is tiered to look more robotic. You would think they could have designed a Masterpiece where the front end of the car breaks apart more to look more like his G1 self.

Also the face sculpt just doesn't have the Sideswipe feel to me. The classics headsculpt didn't either.

Thanks for the reply on the pile drivers.

I was wondering if either SW cannon & blaster or those pile drivers will be able to store inside SW or if he even has a battery cover.

with the other cassettes they should come as a for pack rite?.

Agreed, as it was billed as Rodimus Convoy when being released. They threw in the Hot Rod mode as a nod to his origins with western fans. As Hot Rod, the toy is incredibly out of scale. If you watch the movie you will see just how much Hot Rod grows when the Matrix turns him into Rodimus Prime. Hot Rod should be about be the height of the Autobot symbol on Rodimus Prime. With MP09, it is level with the lower edge of the silver strip under the windows of MP10. That is the perfect height for Hot Rod and in scale with MP12 Lambor (guessing since I don't remember seeing Sideswipe and Hot Rod in the same shot). Its a shame they couldn't make Hod Rod shorter but sci fi and real life just aren't compatable sometimes.

that's a concept that a lot of fans seem to struggle understanding lol.

i still have my MP09 as hot rod on my shelf.. but that's because i ABSOLUTELY love hot rod.. and his face is perfect. i can live with an "oversized" hot rod. plus, i can't recall him an sideswipe being in too many scenes together lol.

if takara is smart, they'll give us the prowl mold next. he was another favorite of mine. and we could get smokescreen and bluestreak out of that mold. i seriously cannot wait for that.

I haven't watched the G1 cartoon since I was a kid, but if memory serves, the car bots were more or less rib height standing next to OP. To me at least, the Classics Autobot figs are in reasonable scale with MP-10. So as long as Sideswipe doesn't dwarf Classics Red Alert, I consider them to be in relative scale.

I'm basing the scale on the G1 cartoon, which admittedly inconsistent at best. But it mostly had the car bots (Prowl, Jazz, Sideswipe etc.) considerably shorter than OP (up to his ribs IIRC), which IMO makes MP-10 scale well with my Classics figs.

I can't comment on MP-09 basically because I never bought him.

In any case, I remember an interview with Takara stating that MP-10 is now the new size standard, which all following MP's will be scaled with.

I am very familiar with the statement that Takara made in the translated article nearly 10 months ago that the MP line up would take into consideration scale. However, it doesn't guarantee anything. MP Soundwave could be two inches taller, or two inches shorter, or the exact same height as MP Starscream.

Did anyone watch the video? I'm wondering if there are magnets at play. For example when he transformers Lazerbeak or when he puts it on SW arm and shoulder. Made me think of those Bakugon type toys and all the possible uses te magnets could maybe have. Just a thought, like launching the cassette using
Magnetic force and having it instantly transformer as it does so.

Can not wait for this (already had it on order since I first heard) now I just wish we could have a MP Overlord, Galvatron, and a retooled Megatron minus the weak legs and smoke stack on his back.

They hid the Condor transformation from us. One guy transformed it while another guy covered it up with his hands so we wouldn't see how it transforms.

Can not wait for this (already had it on order since I first heard) now I just wish we could have a MP Overlord, Galvatron, and a retooled Megatron minus the weak legs and smoke stack on his back.

I mentioned this earlier. If you look at the pics where Laserbeak is on his shoulder, you can see that Laserbeaks feet hook into the shoulder ridges and on the outside of his wrist there is a protrusion where the feet lock on.

Thanks for mentioning it again. I kind of see the wrist part your talking about. Still wish this worked on a magnet system though then there would maybe have been less worry about friction clip ins. But I'm far from complying though, this figure is what I've been waiting years for.

It don't seem that hard to figure it out though. From condor mode:

-Turn the wings forward, then fold them in
-Pull the silver weapon mounts to his sides, over the wing joints
-Fold the weapon mount wings downward to wrap completely around
-Straighten legs out, then turn feet around
-Push head in

Seems pretty simple IMO.
