G1 Bruticus (original)

Postby gbm » Thu Nov 29, 2012 7:39 am

Does anyone here own a G1 Bruticus? I was contemplating a purchase of one, to go along side the newer FOC one.

Can anyone comment on the awesomeness, or non-awesomeness of it?

Thanks

G1 Bruticus will always be awesome for me simply for the nostalgia value. I grew up with these guys. However, if G1 isn't your cup of tea, you may be dissapointed. Here's my 2 cents: FoC much more complex transformation, G1 has about 4 steps for each limb. Size wise G1 stands from his feet to head at 22cm, FoC come in at 29cm. Due to the size of FoC members being larger, G1 may seem a bit anemic. However, proportion wise, due to G1 onslaught being a voyager'ish size figure, his limbs don't appear as large as FOC.

hmmmm, makes sense.

Well, I'm a child of the 80s (born '75), so this is right up my alley. Thought it would look bada** standing next to the FOC one.

Found a great price on all 5 G1's....only $120. (with shipping)

I think I'll go for it.

I don't have a complete G1 Bruticus (just Onslaught, unfortunately) but I do have RID Ruination (plus a knockoff in RID cartoon accurate colors). It's one of the better Scramble City type combiners, IMO, I hope you like yours when you get it.

I always liked the Combaticons over the other combiners because of the variety of vehicles. The Protectobots had some variety too but I could never get my head around a motorcycle being the same size as a helicopter (don't make me compare a jeep to a space shuttle). Ahem. I say go for it, Onslaught is pretty much my favourite Decepticon so I'm biased but they're a cool set.

I have him, plus Superion and Defensor to compare him to. Of the three, he's by far my favorite combiner.
The leader has a good transformation, looks plausibly good as a truck and has a useful base mode.
The Bruticus head and kibble looks powerful and the limbs have decent robot modes and character-wise, they're the best combiner team.
Superion always felt too boring theme-wise with five planes and looks skinny, and while Defensor is well-proportioned, his alt modes aren't as fun.
If you like the FOC Bruticus and want to make him even more awesome, definitely consider to give him a little family.
Heck, you might want to get the Energon Combaticons (and 3rd party upgrade) and Power Core Bombshock & Combaticons to go along with him. And maybe Universe Onslaught.

So I was about to spring for an brand new Encore version....but from what I read, even a slightly used G1 version is far superior to a mint Encore one.

Truth to this?

Quality wise probably. I heard the reissues have cheaper plastic. You could go with G2 too, if you can stand the colors. I need to get myself a G2 one.

I own the Encore version and even though I don't have a basis for comparison it is a great G1 combiner. To own him is a definite case of nostalgia being born in '77. The Encore release is a bit pricey so if you can find him at a good price new or used you won't be dissapointed.

Should you decide to pick him up try to get your hands on WST Shockwave (Military Operations Commander) to add to Bruticus...pretty freakin' cool dude! ;)^ :VEHI:

G1 Bruticus is an excellent toy, if you enjoy G1. Solid individual alt modes for all the members and good robot modes for 4 out of the five members (Swindle isn't that good, but he's earned his pass by being a cool character). Onslaught is excellent in all modes (although I've always been a bit disappointed by his lack of articulation in alt mode: he can't turn... But then again, nor can Motormaster, with whom the problem is even more jarring).
I also especially like Vortex (interesting transformation) and Brawl (simple transformation, but very solid lifelike alt mode).
Given a choice of Superion, Defensor, Menasor and Bruticus, I'd choose Bruticus (although adding Computron to that lineup would make my choice more difficult, to be honest).
I'm so meta, even this acronym...
