G1 Masterpiece Skyfire

Postby Wikkid » Sat Feb 04, 2006 9:42 am

Tfmaster invited me here so I figured I'd lay up some pics of my second custom. The Smoked-screen beside him being the first. Anywho, I learned alot from this bash and may be making alterations when I do another one. Namely the chest panels being too large giving him a stubby look. To correct this, making the side slots of the cockpit shorter would allow for the chest pieces to be smaller in order to conceal them. Another change will be to create movable kneecaps. (As Skyfire had some pointy ol knobs) but couldn't here as they'd interfere with the arms in plane mode. The cargo bay is currently removable but I've divised a way to make it part of the overall design next time.

The cargo bay and cockpit both open. There's a full control panel I cut out of the Rhino rig from MASK fame. One of the seats was also used. I'll be getting a HUD viewscreen sticker and other monitors later.

All non Prime parts were hand made from steel. It's painted using Sikkens Autobase and clearcoat system. Same stuff that's used on todays cars making it resistant to UV rays or even most chemicals. Paint applied by airbrush and cleared using a conventional HVLP gravity feed gun. It weighs just under six pounds

Anywho, here's the transformation.

Image

Stand it up using the usual Prime foot transformation

Image

Remove the cargo bay. Extend legs. There's a cover around back that flips open the same as Prime had to conceal his head. It flips back here all the same to allow the arms to pass. Shift cockpit to one side and slide arm around to back. Twist cockpit the other way and repeat with other arm.

Image

Cockpit down with both arms around back.

Image

Arms swing to side. Chest panels flip in.

Image

Chest panels slide in and lock onto cockpit concealing them little weapon pods. Arms down and fists out.

I forgot to mention that the backpack hangs out during all this making it unstable.

Image

Now the backpack pivots up into place and the wings slide in. And that's all there is doods.

Incredible work there Wikkid. I love the fact that you actually made it with sheet metal.

Welcome man! I'm glad to see you made it over here.

May I make a suggestion?

Now that you know basicly what and how you would go about things differently why not just sell this one one ebay, make a decent profit, then just invest in more materials and a MP Magnus.

This way the parts will already be white in key areas like the arms so the red doesn't look like it's bleeding through. (A problem you brought up over at TFans) And secondly since it's still fairly fresh and wanted on people's minds you might be able to make a decent enouph profit to buy a couple more prime molds. (More MP Bashes!!!)

Anyhoo, there is always room for improvement in this hobby as you already know and I personaly never really consider any of my Kitbashes "Done" just "Good Enouph".

Keep up the great work man. I really can't wait to see what you do next and it's cool to see you made it over here.

Measuring tools (micrometer, ruler/measuring tape, square)

Just the bash was $100.00 Canadian which was for the Prime. I wouldn't consider tools a bash cost cause I use them for automotive restoration. Also, all shop supplies are free as my boss doesn't charge for materials on anything we do.

Gorgeous work. But I have to ask, what did you need a micrometer for?

Why wouldn't you need a micrometer?

Etalon makes good ones.
Later there will be something better here.

I was considering making a G1 Skyfire for my next project.
Looking at yours makes me reconsider. You did an amazing job..really stuning. I'll probably make one but I know that it may never be as good as yours. You really put your heart into this one! I love it! Despite some comments you got about his legs too short or whatever, it may only help you make another one even better. Still, this Skyfire IS a masterpiece!Making another is not neccessary, you've already got first prize with this one! :D :D :D
Incredible!

Mon dats Wikkkiddd!

Seriously man. You've done such a pro job that it almost looks like it came straight out of Hasbro's labs (you know, the imaginary Hasbro where every TF is a fan fav?)

You deserve the highest compliments on this. Simply amazing.

Thanx for the comments doods. I'm gonna try to get around here more often. I didn't even know we had to submit pics for the galleries until a week ago. I just thought you doods displayed those that were worth displaying. Anywho, I'm currently in pre-planning stages for a toon accurate fully posable Shockwave that should fit in with my G1 figures.

And I made a mistake about the micrometer, I actually meant caliper. I used it to make sure every part that required two pieces (Chest, etc) were the same size.

LOL! I knew it! Thanks for mentioning that. Some people probably though me even more of a freak after that mic comment.

Can't wait to see more!
