Machine Wars was more of Hasbro's way of saying "okay we don't know how transforming animals are going to take, so we'll sneak out a small line of transforming vehicles at the same time", contingency brand, not revival.

It's a very very rarely used term used by fans to describe anything that could fit into the G1 continuity that is not G1 or G2. (with G2 only really existing as a toyline, and a Marvel Comic).
RID is referred to as RID, while the Amarda, Energon, and Cybertron series are often referred to as the "Unicron Trilogy"
