Game of the Decade!

Postby fowlowl2626 » Tue Dec 22, 2009 5:55 pm

My game of the decade is probably Resident Evil 4 just because I found it the most thrilling game to play through, but I still really want to try psychonauts. :)

p.s. OoT was released in 1998, therefore does not qualify.

Meh, RE4 was good, but it suffered from having more escort missions than most people would like. In fact, half the game is an escort mission. RE5 rectified this in that, though there HAVE been problems with the AI partner, at least that partner is capable of fighting back rather than needing to be saved after coming within five feet of an enemy. Likewise, both games suffered from an overabundance of "Press X to Not Die" segments.

For me, I think I need to make a list (With no particular order):

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess:
Take Ocarina of Time, completely gut the worst parts (That means you, Navi!) replace them with similar but much better versions (That means you, Midna!), give it the marked increase in graphics and sound that I don't feel right mentioning (Comparing an N64 game to a Gamecube game like that isn't really fair), kick the story and characters up a notch, and then kick the combat up a notch as well. Then you have Twilight Princess, easily as good if not better than OoT.

Shadow of the Colossus:
A massive world, second only to it's massive bosses. The fact that this game is simply one big boss-rush is negated by the fact that the bosses themselves are large enough that several of them qualify as platforming missions. It's a great big game with great big monsters, basically. The character and map design were also top-notch, as were the graphics.

Half-Life 2 and its Episodes:
Valve's mastery of facial animation? Check. Sense of humor? (The AR3 Conversation in Episode Two) Check. Fantastic action? have you USED the Gravity Gun, or the Super Gravity Gun? Very check. Creepy as hell? "We Don't Go to Ravenholm." Check. AI partners who are highly competent to the point that YOU'RE slowing THEM down? Check.

Team Fortress 2:
This is what would happen if Pixar made Counter-Strike. Likewise, unlike your typical online shooter, it receives new gameplay changes all the time. Not just bug fixes or new skins. Entirely new gameplay modes, new maps, new weapons that give you much more options in how the game is played (Decapitation is now my new favorite thing in this game, sorry backstabbing) new voice files, etc...well, unless you decided to buy the 360 version, in which case I can only apologize for your waste of money. All it's missing is a single-player story mode. The supplementary material just isn't enough.

EDIT: Actually, the single-player mode isn't so non-existent, they're currently beta-testing some competent AI bots, who right now are only capable of playing King of the Hill, though they do play a pretty good game of it.

Psychonauts:
The fact that this game sold very poorly is such a shame. If you haven't played it, you have directly contributed to the downfall of humanity. It is easily one of the funniest games ever (On Pyrokinesis: "Never use it unless it's very very important, or very very entertaining!"), with some of the best gameplay ever. That this game didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel is sadder than an orphan puppy alone on Christmas Eve.

If there were a game of the Decade award, I would either go for Fallout 3 as the most likely candidate, followed by Half-life 2 and the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1. All 3 are shining examples of their genres (and yes, I noticed that all 3 fall into the first-person category)
Next up on Pimp My Jeager.

ive played all those games, but i still think re4 is still better, but twilight princess would without a doubt be in my top 10, and orange box as a whole.

RE 4 was good, but I'll always curse it for unnecessarily changing the series. World of Warcraft is a good contender, there aren't many games that keep people playing for 5 years.

Definately Sly 3 for me! Greatest F*king game EFFOR! I love how you can run around giant-ass levels and just jump random people and steal their money! Thats my favorite part of the game. IMO Sly 2 has a better story mode, but you can only play it once. Sly 3 you play it as many times as you want, plus after you beat the game, you can run around in different levels and steal random **** and money from people. My favorite level just to explore and jump people, is Vinice Italy, cuz Ive always wanted to go there. The main reason I love this game so much, is because of all the memories of playing it. I would just wake up one saturday and play that mo-fo until 12 PM, its just a fun game! I dont agree that this game should be rated E10 It atleast should be a T rating. In short, greatest game ever, so fun to run around in, story is fun. And the ending, oh boy. Saddest ending ever in a video game! Not actually in terms of sadness, but its just depressing for me. Because it clearly leaves room for a sequal, but its been 6 YEARS! And the same company went off and made that poopy game, Infamous. Some of you might like that game, but I frekn hate the balls out of it. Image

My only problem is that there's so much walking. Manaan in the first KotOR has to be one of the toughest missions to complete because it's so tedious to walk all over the place.

but they know how to tell a story, and they know how to cram in enough side missions to make another two games. My only regret is not owning a 360 to play Mass Effect 2. I know I'm getting The Old Republic, though.

I literally burned out my first copy of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from playing it so much, I never done before or since, although I did were out the laser on my Xbox 360 from over playing Mass Effect and DVDs.

You do realize that Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are out on (and coming out for) the PC as is Dragon Age: Origins?

I know, I have Mass Effect on PC, but I have to turn down the graphics to get it to run. Since I assume mass Effect 2 is going to be "prettier" as most sequels are, I'd rather have it look nice and run well on 360 rather than just run nice on PC.

From the looks of things, though, Dragon Age: Origins looks like it would run fine on my PC. So maybe I'll have to get some cash together.

Yeah, I played infamous, and I hate it. Every time I try to explore the city theres guys every where! On trains, on buildings, coming out of doorways, they are litterally coming out of your ass. And the fighting style is like a poor 3rd person shooter mixed with the Force Unleashed, minus the lightsaber. I see what suckerpunch was doing, appealing to other audiences and all. Example: I dont like Ratchet and Clank, and until Insomniac made the Resistance games, I had NEVER heard of them. I see what they are doing, but it just doesnt appeal to me. Another thing that scarred me away from this game, is that people were bragging about them making Sly 4, then they said that the new game was to be announced. My mind was soooo set on Sly 4, that I stabbed my desk when I heard it wasnt Sly 4. I slit my wrists, yelled in anger, and cried in my corner in a straight jacket.(I stab my desk alot, you should see it! It has scratches and holes and crap) But yeah, thats why I dont like infamous. You can kill me, critisize me, blow up my house and eat my remains, but you will never change my opinion on that game, it just scarred me for life.

If you're surprised about being attacked in Infamous, you're gonna freak when I tell you about the enemy encounter rate in every game ever made ever. (Hint: They come at you frequently)

From what I've played, the game isn't like that at all.

I read the title of this thread and could only think RE4. Nothing else. RE5? Haven't finished it, but it's so far really awesome, though I'd have to give it to RE4 since RE4 seems like a newer concept rather than RE5 being an improvement over that newer concept. (RE4 is more an improvement over RE3 than RE5 is over RE4.) What AI problems are there in RE5? I'm only a fraction of the way through, but I haven't experienced any problems... other than that %#$& keeps taking my stuff! :P

Evil_the_Nub wrote:RE 4 was good, but I'll always curse it for unnecessarily changing the series.

Unnecessarily changing the series? You mean story or gameplay? If it's gameplay, then I have to strongly disagree. I think it was a completely necessary change. It makes the older games look like 8-bit wanna-bes.

Might I also suggest the Rock Band games? They're taking the gaming world by its balls. Also, though I haven't played it *sniff* Metal Gear Solid 4.

Honorable mentions: Heavy Metal War, Urban Dead

3. Mass Effect

1. KotOR I. and II. - can't decide. The first was complete, but the second was more fun, felt more "free", the jedi classes from the start and the jedi prestige classes added a lot more replayability. Too bad it was rushed, and I hope the Restoration Project will be complete shortly.

I played the PC problems, and I never really had any problems with the AI. Except when they try to give me stuff I don't need or want, but that's usually very rare. The AI never even TRIED taking my stuff, and if they did, I could just take it back.

Re: Game of the Decade!

Shadowman wrote:Meh, RE4 was good, but it suffered from having more escort missions than most people would like.

That this game didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel is sadder than an orphan puppy alone on Christmas Eve.

the last paragraph was harsh :(

ps. i did finally pick up psychonauts and its pretty good so far. B-)
