Despite the recent GI Joe: Retaliation news, I was shocked to find the toys at a local Target...

Wave 1 was released to retail but that's it. Everything else is being held back until 2013

Huh. I knew that Adrianne Palicki was Wonder Woman in that TV pilot but didn't realize D.J. Cotrona was Superman from the unproduced Justice League movie.

Man. I just heard about these Dollar General exclusive GI Joe figures. I must have those Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow figures because those were the figures I had as a kid!

Joecon coverage http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format ... 1670552853
Probably the biggest reveal being a new Micro Force line of minifigures. Series 1 of these is going to feature 80 with about half of those shown so far. I'm hoping to see a LOT more Cobra troop builders among the remaining 30odd figs as a couple of Troopers and a Viper don't really cut it in what's likely to be a blind or part blind line. Lets see some BATs, EELs, Crimson Guard, specialist Vipers and Iron Grenadiers, at least a couple of sculpts of each please Hasbro, make the doubles worthwhile.

I have no idea what they're thinking do a line like that? Who's gonna buy it? Kids? Kids don't even buy the mainline, we know that. I hope to God sales don't affect the other lines.

This is Hasbro we're talking about here. So are those quarter machine rejects what they're releasing until the Retaliation line? I was hoping they'd re-release the 30th anniversary figures that were impossible to find. Which would be just about all of them, but that would be a smart decision.

It was a pleasure to see Larry Hama again at Comic-Con. I miss his spotlight panel but I'm glad he was a special guest of the convention. I already have a ton of stuff signed by Larry so I was content on bringing the current issue of GI Joe: A Real American Hero, the fun Comic-Con issue.

Image

Across the way, I also met Herb Trimpe. Great guy!

Image

I bought a Larry Hama designed shirt from Epic Proportions. The guys said that if I showed Larry my receipt, he would draw a sketch for free!

I already have a Hama sketch so I asked if he could do a Snake-Eyes sketch for a friend.

I was going to bind my Cobra comics to collect the entire Chuckles saga but it looks like IDW is making a Chuckles hardcover in November!

Image

GI JOE COBRA LAST LAUGH HC

(W) Mike Costa, Christos N. Gage (A) Antonio Fuso & Various (CA) Antonio Fuso
The critically acclaimed COBRA series gets an oversized hard cover edition to tell the story that changed all of G.I. JOE and COBRA forever. His name is Chuckles. He is G.I. JOE’s top undercover agent and he’s just infiltrated a top secret, highly organized terrorist organization, but deep cover takes its toll. An action packed thriller from beginning to end this book contains the whole Chuckles saga.

I picked up the GI Joe: Field Guide, which is a collection of animation model sheets from the 80's show similar to The Transformers: The Ark book.

Cold Slither!
Image

I don't remember this happening.
Image

I also don't remember these Transformers-looking robots appearing. I'll have look up this episode.
Image

The synthoid episodes with Shipwreck were terrifying, even when I watched them a few years ago. The animation model sheets of this episode is even more scary...

At Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo, I saw a guy wear an Alley Viper costume. I've seen several Cobra Vipers, officers, Destros, Baronesses, and Cobra Commanders but this is the first I've seen of an Alley Viper.

Just like the Transformers IDW Collection hardcovers, they're collecting the GI Joe run in this format.

Looks like Cobra will not be a part of this line of hardcovers. At least initially.

Image

GI JOE IDW COLLECTION HC VOL 01
(W) Larry Hama, Chuck Dixon (A) Tom Feister & Various (CA) Nick Runge
It’s a new era with new challenges, and to face these challenges the United States military has forged a new group of the best of the best, G.I. JOE. Starting with G.I. JOE: ORIGINS read from the beginning the whole story of how G.I. JOE came to be and their realization of a shadowy group that keeps popping up wherever trouble is.

$49.99

Jonboy Meyers has been doing the IDW Marvel reprint covers after they used the Campbell covers. I really dig his stuff. I saw him at Long Beach Comic Con yesterday and got this awesome Storm Shadow sketch!

As a kid, I’ve always loved “The Viper is Coming.” It’s the one where someone calls Barbeque’s home and announces “This is the Viper” which sounds ominous and threatening. GI Joe preemptively attacks Cobra around the world but doesn’t find “The Viper.” It turns out to be a misunderstanding, The Viper is really the Window Wiper.

Image

Image

I thought it was hilarious as a kid and still thought it was pretty clever when I rewatched it in the recent boxset.

Image

Today, I noticed one of my students reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I remember these books as a kid as well. The student was reading a short story called “The Viper” in the book. When I glanced over, imagine my surprise that it’s essentially the same story as the GI Joe episode!

It’s a very brief one page story. The line “This is the Viper” and the punchline is the same. I don’t remember reading “The Viper” when I was younger. Then again, I don’t remember about these scary anthologies other than their gruesome pictures.

Image

The copyright in the book is from 1981 while the GI Joe episode broadcasted in 1985. I’m not accusing the GI Joe writer David Bennett Carren of swiping to cause a ruckus. Plus I'm sure most of the cartoons I loved as a kid were inspired by something else. I just think it’s fascinating that two things I enjoyed as a kid had something in common!
