Gorenography

Postby GrimSqueaker » Wed Jun 13, 2007 6:12 pm

s anyone else sick and tired of what is happening to horror films.

A coupl eo' years back Saw came out and it was exciting, and refreshing and I freaking loved it. Sadly since then there have been about a half dozen accual horror films released, the rest have all be bloody gorenography, for those of u who dont know gorenograohy is a film with excessive ammounts of blood violence and gore in place of a script, good actors or anything interesting or scary happening at all.

I hate em-

Lets have a little less hostel and more Se7en, Nightmare on Elm Street, Night of the Living Dead, etc.

Also can anyone tell me where all the monsters have gone? When was the last big budget monster movie, I am thinking Slither 2 years back, but i aint certain.

Slither was released in 2006.

Last decent Horror flick other than slither (IMHO) released recently was Dawn of the Dead 2004.
Not a sheeple.
Think for yourself, don't let the magic TV box and social media do the thinking for you.
Question EVERYTHING!!
Just because you have a youtube review channel doesn't make you special.
No, I am not friendly online or in real life.
I look forward to attending a Botcon only to settle matters with idiots in person.

You're absolutely right, someone should make a monster movie.
I don't even want to see movies about serial killers and psychopaths, I get enough of that in the evening news.
I live in SE WI and there is a story of a werewolf of Bray Road. I would love it if they took that idea and ran with it.
It doesn't even have to be true, just something about werewolves or a slathering beast of some sort that Alec Baldwin gets devoured by.
I am so tired of the same old popular story of kidnappings and slaying of teenagers by some dude with mental problems.

I'm a huge Saw trilogy fan because of how mysterious and thought-provoking they are, but I don't enjoy any of those other pure gore movies such as Hostel and so forth. I completely agree that most horror filmmakers nowadays have given up on originality and only choose which instrument will be used on which body part. Total cr@p.

Indeed.

With a movie like Highlander, part of the gimmick is the bloody swordfights. (Well choreographed, mind you) The beheadings are going to be bloody and gory, it's expected.

When it's something like that, I might not always be comfortable with it, but I can accept it.

....cutting people up just for the sake of doing so is no.

EDIT: An excellent horror movie, that actually provided enough chills and jumps that got to you, and included gore (without excessiveness) was the original Final Destination. You gotta admit, it was a damn good flick.

Creepy, bad case of deja-vu.

Everything from this entire thread, the responses, me saying "deja-vu" and me having a pot of water boiling for ramen.

But yeah, all horror films now are a bunch of jump-points and ass-loads of gore. The directors don't care about plot, or any story or character development. They just want to find a new way to kill someone.

To be fair, I never considered the remake of Dawn of the Dead to be horror. I counted it as an action flick. With Zombies.

I love horror movies, and I am a big fan of gore movies, but I agree with the dominant opinion of this thread. Lately gore has taken the place of actually horror in horror movies as well as taking the place of acting and story line. The more recent movies are all maniac by the side of the road or wandering psychopath or the SAW variety. PErsonally, SAW was brilliant because of its ending but SAW 2 was a wear ripoff and I didn't see SAW 3.
I also agree we need more monster movies. My favorite genre of film is the 50s/60s atom age drive in B movies, and nothing can beat aliens from a flying saucer suspended by string or radioactive monsters that are just spiders superimposed on the film. 'Monster' movies these days are just cruddy vehicles to showcase 30 seconds of CGI monster. For some reason THE CAVE is popping into my mind. Then, the monsters aren't even very good.
The psycho killer genre still has mileage left in its tank, but it is horribly overdone and underdone as well. All the inclusion of gore has cheapened the effect that goriness actually has on an audience, and the gore has become the star of the feature while rapidly losing its star power. In the 70s we had terribly horror movies becuase everyone stole from the Texas Chainsaw MAssacre which was itself a classic. But then we got a bunch of horror movies that spent the whole budget on red kayo syrup and powertools (TOOLBOX MURDERS anyone?) and eliminated anything that would have helped the movie along. The monsters we get are way overdone (more zombies???? Ugh.) and the stories just suck.

I saw JEEPERS CREEPERS II years ago, and towards the end when all the surviving kids run off the school bus and into the cornfield, there were like 7 or 8 people. In the final scene there's like 2 or 3 of them left. What happened to the others? There's no explaination, they were just gone. HOSTEL was inexcusably bad, just bad, an unwatchable movie not becuase of the gore but becuase it was a piss poor story with assinine characters. Wow, some college kids go to Europe and act like dicks, then they die! My favorite part of the movie was that I watched it at home, and my DVD remote features a stop button. Horror movies work becuase you develop an interest in compelling characters; you don't want that guy to get killed becuase you like the character. Todays' movies are just a list of poopy young actors who are fodder for the knife of the maniac. Lame.
Again, I'm a fan of the gory stuff. I've got Traces of Death and all that stuff. The Italian directors who are the 'gor masters' like Argento and Feluci used some gore, but their films had good stories. The gore was an accent to the film itself. That has been lost someplace.

I love Bobby, he's a riot. I thought the thread was going to be about Burn's HMW char, Gore or even possibly Al Gore

I've never liked gore myself. I prefer psychological thrillers or ghost stories. My favorites are Stephen King films, the Hannibal series and the Omen. The original Shining was way off Stephen King's vision and I was pleased when he redid the movie. I think the second version is far more frightening than the Jack Nicholson version but I do love them both. And I like The Omen because you're left not really knowing if the boy really is the son of satan or if his adopted father is just nuts and caught in a series of unfortunate events. I did however enjoy Final Destination because I thought the story line and the death scenes were quite original.

The last American Horror film that scarred me was 'Darkness Falls'. The rest have all been gore-fests whose trailers are barely watchable. That said:

I love Japanese Horror. Aparently I'm afraid of little Asian girls. lol. The Ring (thr first time I saw it) scarred the crap outta me. The grudge (the last five minutes) scared me so bad I stayed up all night and watched Boomerang to counter acted the "scary-ness".

I want to see the Messengers though. That looks like a good horror movie.

I love horror movies but the new gorey stuff just bores the crap out of me I'm not moved by it at all. Give me a good psychological horror or just a cheesey old monster movie any day.

P.S. I'm both dissapointed and relieved that this thread was not about Al Gore doing porn.

*shutters*

I hate that noise.

The great thing about the Grudge is that fact that the scariest parts really arent anything really scary. The worst part for me was after the ghost girl crawled down the stairs and the Main Charcter backed up against the door and looked up and the ghost girl's head was in the door way and it snaked down and looked at her. That's the part that made me stay up all night watching Yogi the Bear.
