It is definitely cheaper this way. Basically, once a mold is made, there is little additional cost (just maintenance and mold repair, maybe some storage costs.) If the cost of the mold can be spread out across 6 (or 7) figures, then the cost per is much cheaper with only the plastics changing. Now, they did do the missiles, but I wonder if that was a separate mold because they didn't include them with the conehead figures.
All that said, I might have been willing to pay $50 if this set included the conehead modified weapons. However, the $40 price-point was very good, in my opinion, and I'm not sure how much better this would have sold at $50.
