The Mistika one is pretty good too, although I'd probably be painting him into his Toa of Light colors rather than Toa of Light = Shadows.

Yeah I was hoping when that one came out, that lego would release like a walmart or lego store exclusive of Mistika Takanuva in gold an white, instead of grays and silvers

I just watched all that old bionicle stuff. Man, nostalgia is dangerous in high doses. It can make you FEEL things. Sad things.

It's not just because I miss it though. It's all those Christmas mornings, times at the store when I would ask for the new red guy, that kinda thing. It's like it all just got swept under the rug. Lego threw away it's greatest creation. And I am at a loss for words as to why. Hero Factory is fine at face value. But it's not the same. I wish time travel were possible. Id'e relive the my childhood over and over untill I die. Plain and simple as that.

Go to 0:12 to skip the crappy intro.

So this is what's next huh? You see that keetongu wannabe? That's disgraceful! They ripped off makuta too! and the rest just look like "Hey, I was bored, so looky wat i bulted!"
The only one I can really say i like, is Speed Demon. You gotta admit, hes pretty cool.
The rest are just, WHY? Usually I'm so much more forgiving about Hero Factory, but this time, just no. NO.

I hadn't bought anything Lego in years, but when I saw Drill Dozer last year on vacation I caved and bought it. He's pretty interesting. I admit that the frames they're using now don't have the nice utility of the old bionicle torso bricks in terms of building things that aren't torsos, but they're quite nice for what they are, with joint connections aplenty. Recently I picked up Splitface, mostly because it was on sale, and I'm quite happy with it; also picked up Jawblade for myself on a whim (today actually) after having seen a review and thinking it looked interesting.

Once I had it in hand though, the whole Shark with arms bit became a bit...odd. So I moved some parts around and suddenly!

I LOVED Bionicle to bits back in the day. I became an absolute nerd when it came to the background, delving into every bit of story. It's not often that the storyline for toys is so rich and detailed. Granted, the newer ones had a lot less story than the originals, but still.

I always loved building my own, and coming up with ever more insane creations. My pride and joy was a member of the Makuta brotherhood I called Makuta Xor. He had flaming horns made from silver Gali hooks and the black Vakama Hordika flame claws from the Tower of Toa set.

The Glatorian line kinda killed it for me though. Good for parts, and little else, and even then the new hands and heads look out of place.

Pardon my french, but Hero Factory can **** off. Some of the weapons are quite cool, and I can see the parts being great for Transformer customs, but that aside...no. Dick move, Lego, you killed off my favourite Lego series of all time. And I'd only just forgiven them for discontinuing Exo-Force, which was basically Lego Gundam. Damn it was cool.

RIP Bionicle. We will miss you.

In all fairness, they did wrap it up. Quite well, I might add, which is more than can be said for a LOT of franchises. As in...there really wasn't anywhere else to go with the series. Bad guys defeated, and the remaining heroes were left standing on a reunited plane of bio mechanical goodness.

Hero factory is quite good for what it is. The designs are cool, the parts are great. They tend to be very posable and sturdy, and don't do gimmicks much. Especially on the larger sets, you can tell there's a certain amount of love that goes into 'em. (Also, XL Furno has a CAPE  It's kind of awesome)

Ooh, I didn't know there was Bionicle discussion here. If I can weigh in on the Hero Factory debate, the parts are great. They could be better, but if used properly they can produce great shaping, here's an example of something I built that used a substantial amount of HF parts. The link is for a Deviantart page BTW

I've always wondered: Just how similar are Bionicle/Hero Factory sets to Construct-Bots? Do they both use the same principle like "skeleton with extra parts" or is there more to it? :-?
The resident Rewind... well, half of one

Yeah, it's the same principal, but it's executed differently.

The biggest difference, as I see it, is the primary connection method for parts to the skeletons.

Constructbots use 5mm pegs and c-clips, while Lego's Hero Factory builds use Ball joints exclusively, and 3mm peg holes for detail pieces. Hero Factory also has round connection ports and square axle ports on some bone pieces and torsos.

Hands on Constructbots are 5mm holes, while hands on Hero Factory/Bionicle builds are those square axles.

Example:

Here's the inside rear of the main half of the figure, with the backpack containing the cape and arms removed:
Image

And here's the backpack part. It connects using those forward-facing round connectors to the torso.

To be fair though, the Bionicle construction method is a bit different, not to different, but noticeably so. There were multiple eras of bionicle, and with those eras, there were multiple types of construction and articulation.

2001 was bionicle first proper year, with constructions being simple, and focused around simple, or complex gear movements depending on the figure size.
Image'
Image
It was around 2003, and 2004 when the figure began to focus less on the gear based movement, and rather on ball jointed articulation:
Image
Image

Around 2006 saw gears phased out, and the structures became more monotonous,
this set is from 07, but the concept is the same Image

Around 08, Bionicle focused instead of putting each of the sets in a standard format, but rather making a central theme, in which the charcters were built around, leading to similar parts and construction methods being used between sets, to different purposes and affects

That said.

The general consensus I've seen says stay away from the scorpion one unless you've gotta have it. It's pretty much non-posable and the gimmick doesn't work particularly well. The other sets are great though!

My (totally non-biased) favorite has gotta be the ice-themed archer. The Minotaur is pretty hilarious, too. I can't say I care much for the Skull Grinder, but I may buckle and get that set just for Ekimu.
