I had to put my dog to sleep yesterday.

She was 15 1/2 years old. My wife and I got her as a puppy, not long after we were married. My wife worked at a McD's, and she was in the drive-thru, when someone drove through with this cute little puppy that they were going to have to take to the pound. So naturally, my wife brought her home. She was our first kid. She's been with us since 1997, through everything. But her health was failing, and she had an infection that was going to require surgery. Her life-long vet, who recently retired due to health reasons of his own, and the vet he referred us to, both told us there was no good option that could be offered as treatment. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make. We stayed with her, through the end. It was quiet and peaceful. I cried like a baby. It wasn't the first time this week, or the last. Hell, I'm crying now. I keep expecting to see her come into the kitchen, or into the living room. Or it's "I'd better go take the dog out." It's just hard, it's so hard. I don't even know why I'm telling this here, I've just got to get it out. I called off work yesterday, and I was already off for today, but I've got to go back tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to it, but at least it will get me out of the house.

I am so very sorry for your loss.

Our companion animals truly are like our children, and losing them leaves a huge, vacuous gap in our lives. They enrich our lives in so many ways. A lot of people just don't understand that special bond.

I myself am currently battling for my cat of 14 year's life due to an oral squamous cell carcinoma.

God bless you and your family during this difficult time.

Thank you. It's getting, not easier exactly, but I'm coping better.
Good luck with your cat. I hope it works out.

I feel for you. I know how hard that is. loosing someone close is a terrible thing. never understood how some people can casually say well it was just a (insert pet type) when youve been toegther that long it leaves an empty space in your life and heart. all i can say is i hope you continue to find your way to deal with the loss.

Heya.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Grieving, if permitted and not distorted, still naturally takes up to six months at least, so go with the flow. Don't hold back whenever you have energy, emotions or thoughts to send to your little friend. Let each moment be, for both of you.

Things like this are a big blow, we have no choice but to take the whole of it when it comes. My sincere best wishes.

well, it's never too late to say this...

I'm sorry man, I know that a dog can be a brother or a son to you, I love my parents dog and I feel like he's my little brother, I wish he could talk so we could chat and stuff, I'm sure he'd be a goofy ass dude though.... I sometimes think what I would do if he passes, he's sick at the moment, but we hope it's nothing serious... but I feel you homie, hope you and you're wife are doing better.
