you have to admit....WHAT??? Aggg. I was getting into it/
I have been into transformers since 1984.
While I love G1 I also love new innovations and takes on the characters.
I prefer official Hasbro releases of stuff for the most part
I'm not a huge fan of Japanese original Transformers media or designs.
It's easier for me to say which are my LEAST favorite toy lines: Beast Machines, Robots in Disguise.

IDW Transformers: Dark Cybertron Finale (DC 12) Review

Motto: "Till All Are Pun!"
As You Were
(Spoiler free-ish)

WARNING: While the review does not contain spoilers for the issue at hand, it may reveal previous plot points from previous RiD and MTMTE issues.

Synopsis
IT GETS EVEN BIGGER! Okay we lied when we were talking about last issue… but this issue is as big as they come. It’s all come down to this moment—every scheme, every lie, every moment of heroism, every relationship, every rivalry… if CYBERTRON falls, so falls the universe!

Image
What he said

Story

As March comes to an end, ReGeneration One concluded, Conspiracy is over, it's also time for the IDW ongoing Transformers crossover to do the same: the culmination of Dark Cybertron is here, after months of plotting, scheming, stalling and more scheming on behalf of Shockwave, James Roberts and John Barber. And by months, I mean all the way back in Spotlight: Shockwave, Shadowplay and Shockwaves - so years, really.

Image
Things, so many things

If I were to do a summary of where we are in order to get to this issue, I'd be writing for ages, so make sure to check out the Previously page to make sure you're caught up on all that has gone down. But we are here, on Cybertron again, with all the cast in one place - including the dead - the Ammonites attacking en masse (70 billion is a big masse) and Shockwave collapsing time, space, reality, the universe and everything into his giant, one-eyed purple 42 self.

Image
Maths

Take Barber's penchant for continuity issues and their stitching, Roberts' flare for dialogue and their overall plotting skills, and this is what you get. Jhiaxus, Starscream and Metalhawk deal with each other in not entirely surprising ways. Brainstorm and the Dead Universe survivors (sort of) banter and bicker. Punches are thrown, blows are received. Dialogues and monologues abound.

Image
Of course you do, Brainstorm

But the overall, overarching main big bad and true protagonist of the story has been, and is up to this issue the once fabulous senator Shockwave. Seeds were scattered way way back, and the reaping comes now - with a conclusion that is actually really satisfying for a number of plots. Not all of them, but more on that below.

Art

Phil Jimenez returns to work on layouts as he did all the way back on Dark Cybertron #1, with pencil work this time by Brendan Cahill and inks by Brian Shearer. And I like it, I really do! They handle very big shots really well, and the panelwork is astounding in some places. They also manage to imitate, without copying, Milne and Griffith's styles in some particularly impressive splash pages, too (see above).

Image
..okay

It does help that the colour work is once again attended to by the technimagicolourist Josh Perez. There is a sense of continuity with prior styles while still retaining the differences where needed (mostly in softer hues and lines in faces). And there is a lot of light(s) in this issue, natural, artificial, explosive, fiery, timey - he covers them all well, as expected.

Image
Dem shadows

Tom B. Long does a marvellous job with lettering, too. A lot of explosions, fizzes and particularly noisy moments are well worked by him, and there's some nice nifty font work going on in dialogues too. The covers are fewer, but by now means lees impressive: Phil Jimenez and Romulo Fajardo Jr tackle both cover A and the massive Metroplex wraparaound retail incentive, with a gorgeous Casey Coller and Joana Lafuente Shockwave cover B (in the thumbnail).

Thoughts
Spoilerish ahead

I said above that, while the issue does conclude the Dark Cybertron arc and storyline really quite nicely, it does not show an actual conclusion. Is this a bad thing? No. These are ongoings. The issue has set up the next three (two plus one) series very very nicely, while rounding off what had to be done. We get Megatron's change of ..everything, Optimus' return as a Optimus, the Decepticons a bit at a loss, and a reluctant Cybertron in the hands of a Starscream again.

Image
Are we..?

If the initial issues of the event were a bit slow in build up, the later section of the run definitely picked up, quite nicely too. There wasn't the usual feeling of rushed endings from MTMTE or the lull from RID, and the pivotal role played by everyone's favourite purple cyclopic robot was, well, pivotal, but also nicely, at times movingly, executed. I feel both satisfied about the run and intrigued about Dawn of the Autobots. Bring on next month!

Well, I'll say this. That was a far better wrap up than I was expecting, and leagues better than what Regeneration one got.

So for upcoming storylines we have soundwave being pissed at megatron, joining up with galvatron, windblades story, Optimus primes return to earth, Starscream having to deal with the fallout of the Dark Cybertron story and what its done to his reputation and standing as Cybertrons leader, and Megatrons conversion to Autobot and Joining the lost light.

Are you ready for what comes next? I'm just hoping the writers are. Thats a lot of plot threads and im really hoping all of this has been planned out as well as they are letting on.

As for the comic, It was pretty much a good time all the way through. Shockwave gets some redemption at the end, and considering he was shot by both Megatron and Optimus, it looks like the possibility of him returning is slim and none.

Precisely. So much stuff left open for the next series, without leaving the current plots hanging too much. Very nice indeed.

I'm a little concerned about Megatron's change of heart/ideology/actions, especially from a political reading of the character's evolution, but I'll be very interested to see how it evolves in MTMTE from next month on!

IDW BROKE TRANSFORMERS!

This entire issue was a train wreck. IDW has changed Transformers so much I don't know why I bother reading it. The characters don't talk or act like I remember them from childhood. They all sound like people you would meet in a Starbucks... and it doesn't matter how big the battle is or how high the stakes are, the action still comes out as corny!

You do realize that as of this year, transformers is thirty years old as a franchise right? I should hope they dont talk or act the same way. Heck, one of the things that bugged me about furmans "-ation" run was that aside from some interesting ideas here or there, it was all the same ideas he was hashing out years before. Regen 100 is also guilty of rehashing a lot of furmanisms, I like the guy and think he has good ideas, but I'm happy to see the franchise move foreward and embrace new ideas. Orion Pax as a Mel Gibson type rouge cop? Cool. Prowl as a scheming two faced bastich? I like it. Bumblebee as a leader who's idealism runs off on megs and shows him the error of his ways? Thanks IDW. Hell, Im sorry to see certain angles, like starscream wanting to earn leadership honorably yet still scheming and power hungry, dropped from All Hail Megatron. Furman was removed from the main series for a reason, and my only regret was that it took a few years for IDW to see that the man just didn't have many new ideas in him.

^Thanks for stopping in with the info!

I really like how this tied up so many dangling old plot threads. It seems like Shockwave, Jhiaxus, Bludgeon, and Monstructor have been showing up at nearly random in the IDW books since the get go, so it's nice to have a resolution to that.

I'm still not entirely excited for RiD's Earth-based story, but we'll see how it goes. The early look at those three pages of Thundercracker being goofy was pretty cool.

I'm glad to see the route IDW is going, there needs to be a lot of change, because if things don't this franchise would just go more stale than a 30 year old chocolate cookie. As much as I loved the old series as a kid, I like to see other adaptions of the war between Decepticons and Autobots, and with all wars, people do end up going to the other side, it gives these characters more a more dimensional persona, rather than this is us, we keep it this way. Or whatever lol.

Right, yes, they broke Transformers. That's why their comics have failed miserably at every turn. How dare they.

Seriously dude, if you don't like it, then for God's SAKE don't read it. You torture yourself and others by doing so. All you EVER say about the comics is how much you hate them.

i didn't entirely buy his evolution, the speech seemed a weeny bit forced, even given the situation, but i think that's because i'm suspicious of him by nature. i'll be one of those autobots you know ain't ever gonna trust that. that being said, i am well looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

I think the biggest problem with him is that the Megatron from the Dark Cybertron story arc (unless he's gone full-on delusional or has developed partial amnesia) could not possibly be the same Megatron from the Spotlight/Megatron 4 issue run. The Dark Cybertron Megatron is a very believable character, one who started out with an ideal, gathered a support base but then it turned into something much larger than even he could envision. Not too dissimilar from how things happen today and, all too often, the person at the helm has to adapt to the growth if they want to maintain a semblance of control over their creation. As his movement grew and evolved, he had to do likewise or be left behind. This Megatron is actually a victim of his own creations growth unlike the Spotlight Megatron who was painted as a ruthless master of his creation and in control through every step of its growth. Similar if not identical ideal right from the start but we would never have seen the Spotlight Megatron reach the same conclusions and adopt the same philosophy as what the Dark Cybertron Megatron has.
So it certainly isn't that this Megatron (DC) is an unbelievable one, he totally is. It's just that the creative team didn't follow up on things properly. From a really skewed perspective, that team is actually in the same position that I mentioned above: Their creation grew beyond the point of what they could handle and they tried to adapt and things just fell apart, leaving plot holes and continuity errors. Life imitating art imitating life.

Bet you all didn't see THAT perspective coming from a guy who is otherwise a cynic and a complete and total ***hole towards everyone on here. :P

My recap of what happened:

Metalhawk magically comes up with a solution to throw the ores out of balance. Megatron and Optimus talk Shockwave out of destroying everything by getting him to remember his past.

I'm sorry, but that was a big letdown after all the buildup. It felt too easy a solution to the whole thing. I might have thought about actually subscribing to the series, but not after that.

While I agree it was a bit of a letdown, that's only because my expectations were so high. Metalhawk's second round of self sacrifice I could've done without, and Shockwave remembering his older self was a bit odd, especially since the last time his logic circuits went nuts he didn't revert to his pre-Shadowplay mindset.

And, I'm still irritated by Megatron's heel-face turn. IDW (and Roberts and Roche in particular) have done a solid job of making Megatron sympathetic, or at the very least understandable in his goals. If this had happened immediately following Chaos I might buy into Megatron being repentant, but the events of RID #13-16 make that a bit hard for me to swallow, when Barber positioned Megs as an over the top bad guy. Am I really expected to buy Bumblebee's death bothered him so much? The change feels forced; though I'm curious as to where it leads in MTMTE, it's not off to a good start thus far.

That said, an entertaining finale, and a shame that Senator Shockwave is finally gone from the IDW-verse, but that was the only logical result. Because this issue was a bit rushed and slightly disappointing to me, I disagree with Va'al's review for... the very third time ever, and give it a 4/5.

I thought it was pretty good for what it was, but I'm going to do a full re-read soon to see if I enjoy the story better as a whole, rather than a bunch of separate, often messy parts.

I am quite excited for the books moving forward, especially season 2 of MTMTE.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

I did that. I got 10, 11, and 12 all on the same day, then re-read the whole. It's Definitely better as a whole than separately, save for all of the "previously" parts.
