A lot of younger girls like Yaoi. I know There's a type of Manga aimed at older women (forgot the name of it though).

How popular is Gundam over there? I've seen videos where Japanese girls scream in joy when they here TM Revolution begin singing Vestige. It's a really cool song, but he looked really gay singing it.

Like an Asian Elton John.

Probably the same reason men are into lesbians/yuri.

A reason that no one knows of.

To get out of the "boring old" traditional rule of boy meets girl and boy gets girl. Or, maybe it's a backlash at the immense popularity of lolicon over there, heh. :P Either that, or we "ladies" like cute boy/man getting on with cute boy/man just like you guys like girl on girl action. And - Transformers are no exceptation here. (Not really a fan of slash myself.)

Japan is truly the mecca of comic books for EVERYONE, even the elderly folks 100 years old and over?! And do I have to travel to Japan to appreciate the wide variety that Americans don't seem to get. (Like most bookstores and libraries only seeming to carry nothing but tiresomely cliched fantasy adventures where young uniformed schoolkids suddenly end up in and Gothic Lolitas. This stuff seems to be confined only to the tween and teenaged audience here in America.)

I am not really surprised by all the nervous breakdowns in Japan, which seems to strictly enforce such rigid rules as well as impossibly high expectations for its young people not to mention apathetic attitudes you mention here. I also read that some young people (especially males) got so fed up they just went and locked themselves up in their rooms for a long time. What is that situation called, BTW? I think it starts with the letter "h".

You seem to know so much about the modern Japan culture.:D

Probably same reason guys like Yuri (Girl X Girl). I'm don't read Yaoi usually, but sometimes I just can't help it.

They're so ikeman! :P

But some of Yaoi branches on Pedaphilic. Check out Lovless and you'll know what I mean. It's kinda like Zatch Bell with Kitty ears and chains.

I know broken Japanese. For sentances I use a phrase book. I know it's kinda cheating, but hey, I'm still learning.

I can count to 20 though. :P

It depends on where you go, what you do, and who you talk to.
For instance, Tokyo has many tourists, it is a diverse city and quite often people will speak English. Especially in train stations, department stores, museums, and other touristy spots.

Kyoto on the otherhand is a very traditional city and sometimes it is difficult to find people who will speak English (even if they know how to speak it).

It's really good to bring a phrase book in my opinion. Most Japanese under the age of 40 can speak some level of English, but they are too scared to try. (Remember embarrassment means a lot to them).

The Japanese level of service is incredible. Customers are always treated like kings. The Japanese will never shun you if you can't speak their language like in Paris. Instead they will spend copious amounts of time trying to communicate with you in sign language and broken Japanese make sure that you understand train times, menu choices, directions, etc. However, with that said- when you pull out your phrase book, you will see a glimmer in their eyes and they will thank you for making their job easier.

Thanks for the info Stormrider, I think I'll stick to Tokyo then when I eventually get round to visiting Japan. As for Yaoi I knew a lot of girls who are in to it to varying degrees, I guess it is just the same as men looking at Yuri.
Anyway, since you brought it up Stormrider I'll ask about festivals! Been to any? And if yes what did you get up to? Oh yeah and since you're a teacher does your school have a culture festival?

Yikes, we just had an earthquake!

My apartment building rocked back and forth and then rumbled for about 20 seconds. It was bigger than usual, so I woke my roommate up and we both ran outside.

Earthquakes in Japan are known to come in twos. First the little one comes and rocks the buildings, then 5-10 minutes later the big earthquake comes and destroys the buildings. After 10 minutes we went back inside and turned on the TV. It reported that it was just a lone earthquake this time. Phew...

Earthquakes can be a little frightening. Nagoya, the city that I am in, is about 40 years overdue for a monster earthquake. Geologists predict that this monster quake will be bigger than the one that struck Kobe, and level the city. So today, no Tokai earthquake.

Wow, I just read about that quake, it was around a 7.1'er.
Do you live in constant fear that a tsunami will hit after the earthquake or do you just get used to it?
The construction business must be great over there since we never see Japan as broken down for very long after a quake like other places like Iran.
Is construction a viable job over there for Japanese who don't do well in school?

You guys do realize that the reason for these things is to support heritage, Phallic symbols were semi sexual in antiquity they were mainly a symbol of fertility and prosperity heck in rome it was common to have a household god who was named Priapus, and he was pictured actually weighing his extremely large genitalia against food or gold to show the owners prosperity, more than sex thats what these penis statues and festivals are for mainly.

Ya, big stone wieners are just flat out funny. I thought the Wiki entry pretty much cleared up what it was all about.

You know what would be hilarious? A Kendo stick that looks like a Wang! I have a putter I won in a gold tourny called the "Pudder". It's pretty graphic.

I live about 10 miles from Nagoya's port, so I am not too worried about tsunamis. However, along the coast people do live in constant fear. Hokkaido tends to get the worst tsunamis. There was a giant one 20 years that killed everyone on a small island up north. The wave was monsterous and moved faster than a speeding train.

Everytime there is an earthquake a news report will be given on the TV indicating if a tsunami was detected.

Unchrasimatic wrote:Anyway, since you brought it up Stormrider I'll ask about festivals! Been to any? And if yes what did you get up to? Oh yeah and since you're a teacher does your school have a culture festival?

Yes, my high school has a big cultural festival in September. The start preparing for it in June. They make floats and decorate the school. It's a big process.

Azura wrote:Have you been to a Penis Festival?

Not yet. The penis festival is next. -Honto(true) :D

This month was the Naked Man Festival. Basically three men aged 16, 28, and 46 run around a temple naked. Hundreds of other men, who are also naked themselves, chase the three males and slap them. By slapping them, they have passed along their sins and are pure for the year. The three misfortunate males are then cleansed by the temple priests.

I have never been to it, but I have seen pictures and it definitely looks strange.

Here's a photo from another festival in May.

Image

As you can guess it's a kite festival in Hammamatsu. Each kite is manned by 20-30 people. About 120 giant kites fight over a two day period. The object is to wrap your kite line around other kites and drag them down. Sometimes 6 kites will be wrapped together and 100 people are tugging them down. It's a pretty cool festival to see. :D
