Josh Vallse Gallery COMIKAZE update! And More Robots

Motto: "Build a Giant Robot? Sure it's safe, I mean...it's not like two Stars from a childhood tv show are going to hotwire it and take over the world....right?"
Hi there,
I'm an art guy. I've worked in teh industry for a few years, and have worked on licenses such as Thundercats and Voltron, Bratzs, WWE, few small FX houses and some Game concepts here and there.

Anyways, here is a bulk of my own work. These first few pieces are form an ongoing Transformers Film myself and others were contracted for a summer camp for kids. Here is a pencil render of the Heroe's head (Heavy influence from Primes design)

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... ncept2.jpg

And the Villan, named Destronicus

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... estron.jpg

And the working prop I've built for the film of Destron's head. I designed it to simulate the Decepticon logo with the head dress and crown armor

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... ure018.jpg

Artwork for the hero Autobot and how his costume should end up looking like

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... obot02.jpg

And concept art for the Decepticon truck featured in our car chase sequences

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... nTruck.jpg

And how the truck actually turned out

And for those of you curious as to how the footage is turning out, please check out my production blogs I have set up here....

Motto: "Build a Giant Robot? Sure it's safe, I mean...it's not like two Stars from a childhood tv show are going to hotwire it and take over the world....right?"
And here is some stuff I worked on for Voltron, Copyright 2009 Jakks Pacific. Did it for a sales pitch they were presenting.....

Black Lion with more of a traditional take:

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... ntDark.jpg

Black Lion with more Transformer influence per request of the marketing staff:

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tfolio.jpg

Now, mind you these were rendered back on March, and I admit when going into rendering these pieces I was thinking of how the new TF2 movie might go about designing Ravage. Now, months later, after seeing what it is they went with....I would have mailed Hasbro my artwork and begged them to reconsider had this artwork not have been copyrighted. Oh well.....now for the green lion!

Green Lion pencil rendering:
Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... enLion.jpg

Green Lion Digital Painting:
Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tfolio.jpg

Voltron Profile Digital Painting: This piece won me a spot on the designing team. It was the first piece I did, and I knew right away before I tackled any of the lions...I had to see what Voltron was going to look like. Thankfully, the Design Director at the time was pleased with my interpretation.

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tfolio.jpg

And an update of the Robeast Menasor! I keep the colors and overall look of the original intact, but boosted alot of upgrades to match the style set forth by the Lions.

Digital Painting:
Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tfolio.jpg

Voltron Body. So in the middle of designing the Lions, I get a call, "Designs the body for us now! Marketing is pressuring us to get your take on how Voltron would look pieced together." so with only two of the five lions down, I hammered out this piece in which the only two detailed elements you can see are Voltrons torso, Left arm, and wings being they are made up of the Black and Green lions.

Digital Painting:
Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tfolio.jpg

And finally my favorite and hardest piece I worked on to date. Voltron battling Menasor inside a meteor colony. The digital painting took me days, whereas one piece will usually take me three to four hours, pending on how clear an ideal I have and how clear the direction I recieve is. But the sheer scale of this thing, and the explosions and sword effects demanded my further attention. Plus it was the last piece I worked on for the license, and I wanted it to look Aces.

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tfolio.jpg

Alright, I'll have more work robot related soon enough.

Alright, this piece will be a long way coming, roughly finished towards the end of August or the beginning of September. But I just wanted to share a preview of my take on movie Unicron.

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... ersion.jpg

I'm trying to portray how huge he is by including small cities worked within his outer armor and holding this tiny character who when I revise and start fleshing out this piece, will be even smaller. I'm including alot of the facial hair-shrapnel included in Jetfire, but used it more as an armor asthetic. Also, I wanted to keep a very humanoid face only because he looks more god-like. And I'm sick of these Decepticons looking like insects with their facial features. Soundwave just looked like a beetle when he was speaking.....Fallen looked like some kind of Hornet or Weta. Even Ravage, who was a feline body class....looked like some kind of bug. For Unicron, I don't think insect works well, because he's the very opposite of small. So instead I went with Sapien, so when he appears walking admist the stars it looks like a DaVinci painting. It's an awe inspiring sight. Not a giant bug.

Moving on, here are the photos of the production shoot I recently finished of our decepticon vehicle featured in our ongoing short film.

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tion02.jpg

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tion07.jpg

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tion06.jpg

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tion08.jpg

Image
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... tion03.jpg

For those of you curious, the complete front of the car was reworked. We added a grill on top of the existing grill, a Decepticon logo where the chevy symbol is. The entire bumper isn't the original. And the armor plating on top is fabricated out of steel because it had to be sturdy. We were ramming this beastie into piles upon piles of debris. So we needed it to last. Also, this armor plating will make the front chest armor of the robot rig itself (Head featured in the first post).

Hopefully I'll have some images of the robot Rig itself. I'm planning on filming the rig again this Weekend, hopefully followed by a photoshoot that night. There s footage of the Arm rig and a rough cut film clip featured in the first posts' link to the ongoing Production blog. Take a gander for more in-depth looks into what I'm creating, and leave comments here and any feedback as always is welcomed.

Back to work filming and creating, more coming soon.

Hey!

Interesting stuff here, it looks great. Do you guys have a website or something?
If you think I could be helpful on some parts let me know. I did do a little
Transformers 3d modeling, but haven't really touched the movie style yet.
I do think I'll give it a try after I've finished my Amazon game demo.
You can view my stuff on my website www.heliora.com

How many people are working on this?
Are you trying to make a film like the Half Life film?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1UPMEmCqZo
There was also a cool movie about a mysterious box, made by dutch people.
I can't find it right now but I'll search for it some more.

Thanks man. Website? Only thing I got going on s a production blog hosted on my Myspace page Here.

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuse ... =496403752

It's actually a two part blog with a third part coming around the bend being I keep running into storage capacity issues ha ha ha.

The overall project is for a childrens summer camp in August...the 9th I believe. So the guy you see featured in the vids is actually one of the speakers and councilors and the robots will make up a majority of the set itself on stage. So its very much it's own beast verses being more of a fan vid like the Halflife vid you posted (Which was pretty cool). Our crew is rather large, with members taking on multiple roles of stunt drivers, camera drivers, robot operators, movie extras, actors, so on and so forth. Average of 10 or more people. If anything, this film is a nod to the movie style. Complete with car chases, quick action cuts, extreme close up shots, crashes, and an explosion which is in the works as we speak. Only thing I was missing is a hot chick, which anyone reading this is more then invited to be featured in our sequel...if there is one ha ha ha. :P

Speaking of sequels, if we do have one dude your more then invited to be apart of this. Again sorry for the timely reply but as you can see bu the pics above, I've been hard at it to get this film completed by the deadline. And I still have one more robot to build! Gah!

Alright, I'm back to work, more cool pics and giant robots coming soon! And if any of you guys are on m-space, hit me up!

The film and the project have been completed, now I'm just working on rendering out the film and hosting somewhere so I can post it here. Till then, some pics of our hero bot affectionately named Alpha Primus,

Image

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... rime05.jpg

And more production pics coming soon, I'm planning on having another separate photo shoot of Primus but that may be a long way off. But I will get you these images very shortly so keep an eye out.

Oh BTW, The Primus bot is a workable suit someone can climb into and move around in (Limited movement mind you) and the swords on the right hand retract as well as the gun in the left hand. Fun facts :D

Very cool work. The Voltron art is especially cool. It brings back vague childhood memories of the cartoon for me. Time to find some clips online to refresh my memory. :)

Thank you.
Yes the Voltron license was alot of fun to work on, now if only they could get the film out of production hell and moving forward.

I also did some Thundercat movie contract art, but that was strictly a toy concept. And being its a organic lifeform, not really in place on this site.

I was going to move forward with a Vehicle Voltron concept, but the company told me to strictly stick with Lion Voltron.

In terms of Transformers, I'm still rendering out the final pieces of the film so I can post them online and share them here. Also, now that this project is completed, I'll begin working on more movie based artwork on the most debated character here on the forums, Unicron.

Thanks! Nice to meet you btw. Yeah I try to give it my all in everything I'm apart of. And I'm glad you like it. And with that, more updates!

Yes, I finally finished the short film I sought out to complete back in what seemed to be ages ago. Just a reminder, this film was contracted for kids, and what we did is show them this short film first, then reveal the robots on stage for them to see after the fact. This is caught on film as well. Also, just a heads up, this film was done for a childrens bible camp....thats right, Robots and the Bible. So go on and click and enjoy, because I konw your curiosity is getting the better of you right now ha ha ha.

Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoNDkAzR13c

Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY53TytUydA

Now here in part 3, Youtube decided to be stingy with their audio....nd because I included a song at the end credits, my audio was flagged, bastards. So I'm including two links, one to the you tube vid fo visual eye candy, and one to the buzznet channel for audio stimuli.

Part 3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_FMCQ2lmew

http://mrjoshvallse.buzznet.com/user/vi ... mers-film/

Hopefully it works. Anyways I hope you guys enjoy, was lots of fun and work to complete....and I'm off too whatever other adventure there be waiting for me.

What there is, is quite good. I was sad that there was no robot fighting(yet) most because it looked more like you would pull it off the farther in it got. Really impressed with the villain. The pics arnt anything compared to seeing it move. Cant wait for the hero to move :P

Thanks again. Yeah, I wanted a more raw battle between the two bots, but for what we had to do, and the time frame we were given....it just didn't seem like it could be done decently. And I'd rather not do something right or at least decent verses do it wrong. I am entertaining revisiting this world with more of an action scene for our hero bot now that the stage aspect has run it's course. Now I can afford to blow bits of the robots up, so something in the future to look forward to. But again, thank you for your support and I'm glad you enjoyed it. If anything I'm really proud of the car chases shots we were able to pull off...those didn't come easy ha ha ha.

Also, some more production pics of the Hero bot while it was in progress. You can make out more detail and see exactly how long those spear/swords are.

I know, hence why I posted a second link to Buzznet. The Buzznet vid has the audio, I left the Youtube link up however because they have a better quality vid. Still, youtube lost major brownie points with me....those jerks.

I really think you should post pics of Destronicus and Prime in the scratchbuild forum. You'll get more views on them and they're worth sharing! A shot of you with Prime would be good so we can really see how big he is.

Done and done. Thanks again for the interview opportunity. I only have one pic with Primus really and thats more of me building the bloke. I'll try to find it and post it sometime soon. However if you look at the movie in the shot where we pan out to see all the children, it gives you a general ideal of how big he is.

I'll see about revisiting this world in the future, right now I'm looking for art jobs in our flourishing economy

*Sighhhhhhh.......*

Alright, stay classy everyone.
Josh

P.S. I'm going to look into finishing the Unicron treatments I previewed above, so stay tuned.

I try to make it a goal to post artwork everytime I respond here in this thread...so to make up for my later two posts, I present more production pics!!!! Most of them are from Lake Arrowhead, including pics of the crew and one of my father the welder...sporting a rams cap ha ha ha. Others are new, giving a better look at Primus after i stold them from the producers camera.

Here ya go,

WOW, I really love your takes on Voltron. They look amazing. The coloring that you used gives it somewhat of an abstract look which I think is great. With the black lion I like the 2nd rendering better, but I do think that the original tail, but maybe with the length of the 2nd, would look better. Also, the head looks a tiny bit small for the broad chest/shoulders, so possibly making the "fur" on the sides of the face wider and longer would look even better. Kind of like the Shield Ligers from Zoids. I'm definately not knocking your work, it looks great, and actually, I would love to have a print.
The full body Voltron and the 2nd rendering of the black lion would be a hard choice as my favorite. The combined Voltron gives that human element which makes you feel a bit connected to the machine/artwork, which is some of the draw to the imaginary worlds of Voltron, Transformers, Zoids, ect.
Anyway, you have great talent and I hope to see more as you finish the Voltron concepts, and would love to one day see the same with Zoids and your take on the movie concept Transformers.

Hey thanks, means alot.
Yay, another Zoids fan, there are so few of us left out there ya know. My fav was Berserk Fury, hands down. Next to that was Liger Zero. In fact, hold on a minute.......

Ah here it is, some fan art for us Zoid fans, pencil rendering I did waaaayyyyy back when I was still in college.

Image

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn12 ... fanart.jpg

Liger Zero fused with a BLOX Zoid, think it was Falcon something or other, was a japanese release. Don't think it ever made it to the states. *Sigh*

The Voltron art was my fav license to work on to date. Sadly, the project never moved forward, however the art director I was working for at the time made sure they knew who I was, so hopefully something will come of it in the future. I would like to have worked on it longer, and I agree with your observations for the most part, just an issue of money with these guys though. *Sigh*

My fav pieces are the Voltron vs Robeast and the Profile pic. The Profile Pic was the first piece I hammered out then worked it backwards to figure out what transformed where and went where. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

Thanks again, glad to meet you, hope you enjoy the fan art.

The pencils of the Liger Zero fusion look great. I know that they made one that was the Liger Zero and a Pheonix = Pheonix Liger. My bro has that one. I'm hoping that they release the other Zoids anime that was done in Japan as an extention of the war saga. I really like the concept of the organoids, like zeek. I thought that they should continue with that show, but cartoon network seams to screw a lot of shows by inconsistancy until the ratings plumit.
Thanks for the response.

No prob, and sorry for the late reply. My computer crashed and took Photoshop with it. I have most of it up and working now though, so I hope to get more artwork up here soon enough. I was working on a Unicron Movie treatment which is partially featured here. I've since finished this pencil rendering and can now begin scanning and Matte painting. Hopefully I'll have something soon here for you and everyone else.

So till the Planet Eater comes,
I'll be off trying to finish it ha ha.

You got a great gallery here. Sorry I never replied earlier. Your drawing style is very unique. It has a water color-esqe look to it.
