Should be scaled to be the size of MP10 in vehicle mode, but is a completely new mold, with no inner/white robot and turns into one large robots.

I know they run certain legal risks in doing so, but they really should have gone for spot on show accuracy for this thing, otherwise it really has no place on a modern MP shelf.

It looks pretty cool and all, but it won't look right standing next to the likes of MP-10, Lambor and Soundwave, who all look exactly (or damn near) like they did in the show.

Won't fit at all size wise, this will stand about 6 heads taller than MP 10 Prime, so it's going to be a bit taller than MP1.

See, this thing looks cool, but style wise it fits better with Classics than it does MPs, plus the size of this really just makes it kinda pointless. A shame though, since it looks amazing.
But you know, this is by KFC and is gigantic and considerably more complex than their Perceptor, and seriously I'm not prepared to shell out that kind of money on something that is essentially a stand-alone piece.
Shrink it down to about Voyager though and you'd have a sale with me.

Then I suppose I'll be keeping FansProject's City Commander for a few more years.

I know, it's impossible to make a Masterpiece Magnus. If they had done this as a Classics that the size of the G1 toy, I'd be in for it.

The chest looks a little off, perhaps, but not enough to bug me. What bugs me the most is the cab of the vehicle mode. The slightly curved roof, especially. As a figure allegedly designed to fit in with a Masterpiece collection, it should be a little more faithful to the G1 design.

Of course, I'm griping over something I have little interest in, anyway. I'm happy to plug holes in my Classics collection with third party products, but I've never felt a great need to go that route with Masterpiece figures. (Well, for full figures, at least. I'm happy to add third party accessories to them.)

Even if Has/Tak made an official Magnus, not sure if I'd get him. Cassettes aside, I've never gotten a repeated Masterpiece mold. I might think of making an exception and getting a second use of the MP-10 mold if they ever recolored him white and gave him a proper transforming car-carrier trailer, but even then only if he got a Hasbro release, and I'd still have to think about it.

One thing that has always bothered me about Magnus is his lower legs. They usually come out looking like blue tree stumps on the toys with little flexibility. I would like to have a designer keep the G1 look but make the lower legs a little more dynamic or fluid looking.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me. I might still get this, but if I do, it's staying the hell away from my MP shelf. I still believe Takara's going to do one proper. This will be one of those oddball figures that stands alone in the corner thinking about what it's done :P.

Well, it's official. MP-22 is Ultra Magnus, with a transforming trailer, based off of the MP-10 mold. Let us hope that KFC Toys was not too far in the development process with this, so they can just quietly move on to other projects...

Yeah, I'm sure that will happen! Well, for their sake, I hope either MP-22 really sucks, or KFC can release their figure fast and for a dirt cheap price.

I preordered MP-22 before I even knew this was a thing. I hope they didn't get to making the molds yet! Maybe now they have the incentive to downsize it to Voyager for Classics. Love my City Commander but it might be time to change it up.

The info off TFW is that they're still moving ahead with this since this will be 1 robot as opposed to Takara's white Primt with armour.

Can't say I care to get either, but I'm one of those guys who think a perfect Magnus would include the toy's "White Optimus" aspect, even if it was hardly used in fiction.

Any time there's talk of Ultra Magnus in the third party forum, people are always saying -- even if they like City Commander -- that they'd like a new third party Ultra Magnus for their Classics line. For me, City Commander does it just right. To me, having a shared cab with Classics Optimus Prime is a nice call back to the G1 toy. (Yet the cab forming a separate robot is always the first thing people want to get rid of!) And anyway, in my mind when there's already an official product, it isn't the place of the third party manufacturers to replace it. At most, they should augment it. Which is what City Commander does. Any other third party design is likely to not incorporate Has/Tak's existing Ultra Magnus toy, which to me is a non starter.

Given what I said in my last post re: Classics Ultra Magnus (which I was writing as you posted this), I certainly agree! I wouldn't necessarily be specifically keen on "White Optimus," but having Optimus and Ultra Magnus have identical cabs... which you can only get if the cab is based on the MP-10 mold. So Hasbro wins.

And I don't like third party companies doing figures Hasbro's got covered. I'm willing to cut KFC a tiny bit of slack, I suppose, as theirs was announced first... But still, Takara'd been laying hints this could happen since MP-10 came out! So still a bit presumptuous on KFC's part to start this project.

Third parties should augment collections of Has/Tak product, not replace their product.

In regards to 3rd parties not treading on Habro's heels, I'm not sure I can agree. Sometimes it seems like a time waster, but if we were strict about this then Herc and Giant wouldn't exist since we already have Classics Devesator. Hasbro and Takara may do a character, but a 3rd party take often offers something different.

As for how that relates to Magnus here, it does seem more like a wasted effort to me, but maybe it'll provide a cheaper product. It'll have to. And some people HATE the white Optimus aspect of Magnets, for whatever reason.

Devastator is a rare exception... I'd argue that Has/Tak never really did a Classics Devastator. They took a non G1 Devastator and repainted it in colours that didn't even really look like G1 Devastator, and tried to call that Classics Devastator!

Which I suppose is more a matter of the individual figures, which is where this "Classics Devastator" really falls apart. To me, for any gestalt figure the individual components are just as important as the gestalt mode. Let's look at this "alleged" Classics Devastator. Three of the members are green. That's fine. Two of them are dark grey or black... How is that Constructicon colors? And the sixth one... Wait, there is no sixth one! That may work for an Energon gestalt that homages the G1 gestalt... But don't then go turn around, give that Energon set a crappy repaint, and call it the G1 characters. Because all six of the individual characters aren't there.

Of course, my arguments above do have the disadvantage of making it all a somewhat subjective thing. I can argue against the need for upcoming third party Perceptor or Blurr figures by saying Hasbro already did them, and if the alt modes weren't exactly G1, then oh well, that's why these are Classics updates. People can say that invalidates my above argument against the official Devastator, because, "Of course it isn't exactly G1. It's Classics!" And on the other hand, people could look at my arguments above and say, "Well, I need my Perceptor to be a microscope! And the official figure doesn't cut it!" Really is a no win situation.

But, of course, this is supposed to be a "Masterpiece" figure, which is quite a different animal to Classis. Masterpiece figures are supposed to have an extreme fidelity to G1, but in larger scale and modern toy design. Unless Takara really screws this up, there's absoloutely no need for KFC to be covering the same ground here. Only way KFC to salvage this is to shrink it down and try to market it as Classics... but then we return to my circular argument about it already having been done.
