Okay, with regards to the
actual quote, I think it's quite clear that, rather than them not giving a "rat's ass", they've actually tried to strike a balance with this movie by appealing to both fans and non-fans. That, in my opinion, is worthy of a salute.
It's clear from this, and previous interviews, that the producers as a whole have tried to cater for everybody. Whether Bay himself has is another matter, but the people around him are at least trying to be fair.
Look at the quote again.

He doesn't say, "We're not doing this for the fans, we're doing it for those that have never had contact with the franchise". He says we're trying to cater for both. It's not fair to pounce and cry "sacrilege". Reading is a rudimentary skill.
