Doing decent animation is anything but easy. If it were easy, I would have made something much better and longer.

You're right, doing decent animation is far from easy. However, any animator worth their salt will tell you that in this business 10 seconds of quality animation will get you more work than 5 hours of mediocre animation. Difficulty is never an excuse for poor quality.

It was harder than I thought to get the animation fairly smooth while at the same time maintaining that low-animation that old videogames use. My biggest gripe is that the Mario figures have no leg articulation. That bugs me. I was hoping to have their legs in motion while walking. :/

Easily rectified, just take it into flash and make the joints a symbol set. It might not be in the spirit of true stop motion, but it'll get the job done. Alternatively if you're willing to do a bit of learning and you can't afford adobe software there's always calico monkey or even the Gimp. I've never used calico monkey before, so I cannot speak on it's quality, but Gimp should do just about everything Photoshop does. (and Photoshop does do animation)

I have CS5. I prefer to do the actual stop-motion as opposed to 2D flash animation. But I know what you're talking about. I've actual got more experience with stop-motion than with flash but I'm learning both. But good idea all the same.
