I have tried a few times actually with other lists but I usually dont get as much response until I make my own list of my own opinion. It's like some people only feel compelled to give their own opinion once another one is proclaimed loud on the front page. I dont mind either way as I love interacting with everyone about these awesome toys, just wanted to give you an idea of why democracy has not always been the most interactive approach.

But I cant resist your avatar's beautiful eyes, so here's for you:

As for best beast modes and cars, since its only top 5, it might be tough and restirctive. Like, for cars, since we are looking at the best car modes, its pretty much just g1, alternators and MPs that I'd be looking at. But if I go, say, best lambourghini, then I could throw in maybe a movie figure or RID Prowl. Same goes with animals. Best dinosaurs, felines, water based animals would be more precise than best animals.

True, but some time from now (years?), you could do the Top 5 beast modes and draw from the previous lists such as: "Best dinosaurs, felines, water based animals". You could pull from only the previous lists, or use all of your research.

How about the weirdest looking Transformers. Off the top of my head, I would include ROTF Fallen, Prime RID Soundwave, Thunderwing. Those guys look alien, even to Transformers. Doesn't someone even say to Soundwave something like "are you even Cybertronian?"

Thanks! Been enjoying the lists and the discussions!

I have enough for about 3 years now (not all finished of course) so yeah thats exactly what I will do with the car transformers, thats a great idea!

I am working on a "most indistinguishable alt mode" list right now and the Fallen is on it :)

Wow! Three years, that is awesome. I was wondering about that. It seems like a lot of time and effort involved. It makes sense to be nice and prepared.

Thanks for the compliment. Love the work you are doing, thorough, detailed, extensive, very fun! Thanks!

The overrated and underrated lists are currently in development. It's interesting because the ones in the underrated list (currently contemplating Leader Jetfire for instance) arent exactly the best toys ever, while the most overrated toys are still really good just not as perfect as everyone is saying (currently contemplating MP 10 for instance). But I guess that is the point afterall, I just hope no one hates me after those. I will make sure those appear a bit later after people get a sense of what I look for in transformers toys.

Also, I didnt know FE Arcee was overrated. Now that time has passed, people are even recommending the RID deluxe toy over her. She scales better too.

IDK, I just remember a lot of people bashing the RID figure for not being as good, when, IMHO, the FE is kinda crappy.

A recommendation for your underrated list: beast hunters Deluxe upscaled Windrazor, really, really fun to play with.

Also I can see those two lists being analysed a lot. Your going to have to get ready to defend your opinion :) underrated and overrated are all in the eye of the beholder.

Good points Wolf,

Hey Will,

What will you use to judge overrated and underrated? Just general feel from shelves and forums? Every once in a while people say "I didn't think that one was..."

What is your criteria? Lot's of hype and then the figure falls short? Lot's of talk but the figure is underwhelming? No talk/hype but a great figure?

Just curious.

I believe the best way to make those two lists is to have an extremely biased opinion but to argue it. It will surely have the longest blurbs in comparison to other lists. If I go for a general opinion, I wont be able to defend well enough. It must be figures I own and feel strongly towards and I must express it clearly. But yes, the boards definitely come into the picture when determining why I believe something is underappreciated. Generations Jetfire is a great example since there is a whole thread on this site dedicated to why he is junk. I dont think he is and I will defend that. Other underrated figures will be the kind that went under the radar or that are hated simply because they have a flaw (ie not show accurate) that detracts from how great the figure truly is. My number 1 for underrated will be a figure no one cares about and that is not part of discussions. It will be a figure I feel should be talked about and remembered.

For overrated its the reverse. Easy example, AOE Leader Grimlock is on the best of the year lists and I dont get why. I find a lot of flaws with that toy and while people do acknowledge his flaws, he is still well received and I am very fearful of that since he sets very bad precedents for reasons I will further explain when we get to those lists in a year from now (too much to post before that).

I hope I explained my criteria well enough.

You have, though it's the first time I've heard talk of grimlock being good, I'd heard his voyager version was supposed to be the best.

Feel like maybe each and everyone of us should do our favourite five and explain why we like them so much, even to the point were everyone else despises it. I mean, statically speaking, someone must love the Prime Airarcnid deluxe!

Looking back, only one person said he was the best of AOE:

ScottyP - Leader Grimlock; pick a deco. Looks and feels like a Leader-class toy. Transformation is challenging, but intuitive and fun. Brings out the presence of the character quite well, and has some really great articulation (minus the obvious thing-that-will-not-be-named). While they might not have hit screen accuracy very well on the mold, I can't think of a single Grimlock figure from AoE that really does. I've got to give it to this guy for being just a big pile of fun and passion in a line that was, at times, sorely lacking in it. Honorable mention to Evasion Mode Optimus Prime, who was a hard one to not type for this answer.

So yeah, not too overrated. I guess he wont be on the list afterall. You know, the underrated is a much easier list for me than overrated. If you guys think of any, let me know, they might remind me of something I missed.

And I dont think anyone likes Prime Airachnid.

Oh man, does that mean I should add FE Cliffjumper to the underrated? he's one of my all time favourites. Dont know if he should count though since the reason he doesnt get praise is due to low distribution and not many people getting him (he never came to the states even when the other FEs eventually came) which doesnt really make him underrated. Just like Beast Hunters Cyberverse Commander Ultra Magnus.

WOOHOO! Back on the list and staying there. It's not that he is great but he does not get as much hate as he should. I have so much negatives to say about this guy, to the point that I think he is the worst precedent for a leader dinosaur transformer. It will be biased, but well supported.

Why should he get more hate then? Is it just, in your opinion, he sets a bad precedent for any future leader class dinos (though I don't think we'll get to many unless jurassic world sparks a new Dino fever and tf jump on for the ride)

Instead of replying quickly, I decided to write a draft of what I would actually write if I were to have him on this list. This will give you an idea to the approach I might have. The main thing with the overrated, is about letting some toys get away withi things I think should be criticised:

I just don’t like how the toy has gotten away scott free with some of the laziest designing/ engineering of all time. I know Takara handles the engineering but I never know how restrictive they are to Hasbro’s design. I am aware that Hasbro’s cost cutting does limit and frustrate Takara’s engineering capabilities. Leader Grimlock is on of the best cases of this and he really feels more like a bad omen for where the line might be going, even more so than the one steps and simplified transformers.

The best example I can give you to show my disdain for this figure’s design (also, just so we are on the same page, I am referring exclusively to how the toy is designed and in no way to the character model), is the exposed feet and hands in robot mode. There was no attempt made to even try to hide them. The unarticulated hands are just behind the dino feet while the robot feet hang off the side of the dino’s hips. This is unprecendented in Grimlock’s design along with the design of every single other dinobot in this line (INCLUDING THE MORE AFFORDABLE VOYAGER!). Some are able to hide one set but not the other. Both Slog and Slug manage to pull off not showing any robot bits at a far lower price point (budget too?), and I will never stop pointing back to the G1 dinobots which managed to hide their hands (they didn’t have any feet to hide though). Even deluxe Robots in disquise grimlock as cheap and simple as he is doesn’t have everything so obvious out in the open.
It’s not the only part of the design that is super lazy. I rally hate how the tail and lower back are partformed in the dinosaur mode. It reduces a lot of the potential for an inventive transformation and gives a fake idea to the transformer’s bulk. It is also insanely frustrating how they screw up in the articulation too. I spent 50$, at last let me pose it properly. But no, the elbow joints are ratcheted ball joints which limit the poses you can give. Added to the lack of wrist swivel, you fail to get a decent angle for Leader Grimlock to hold his weapon properly.
It's worst when this is the case for the big centre piece of your toyline. Along with Leader Optimus’ giant backpack, Grimlock exposed robot kibble is quite a let down and a great example to support how lazy the designing has become. I hate how this marks a precedent for it. And this is no hyperbole, these leader toys are a precedent for how little you are getting at that price level. These were the first ever leader toys to not have electronics and that has been copied in the current generations line.

We are no longer 1985, we can get interesting transformation with decent articulation. If they can do it for the lower priced ones, the better do it for the ones that cost upwards of 50$
