Michael Bay on Transformers Dark of the Moon 3D Blu-ray Color and Brightness Issues

Depending on your equipment you may noticed some color and brightness issues with the recent Transformers Dark of the Moon 3D Blu-ray home release. Director Michael Bay dropped by his Shoot for the Edit forums and had the following to say regarding these issues:

The reason some 3D TV color on some systems might not look perfect? Well because there is no standards in 3D. It sounds stupid doesn't it. When we color transfer we spend weeks on a single format. Six weeks on the feature, then weeks additional on DVD, then weeks more on 3D. Every single shot might have brightness windows color moves high light adds. My colors on almost every one of my films have had almost perfect color space scores. I'm the guy who did the first - film to digital - digital transfer release on a movie - Bad Boys 2. I know color and telecine equipment better then almost any director out there. But when I started doing my 3D transfer with the most talented color telecine expert in the world, my buddy Stephan. He told me 3D is ****. There is no standard to the equipment it is the wild west right now. So if it looks bad it's your product. We aimed color space for the most the equipment that has the biggest market share. In our room it looked perfect. So I'm sorry but it's your equipment. Tell the business to standardize and it will all look perfect in the future. Sorry.

I have an LG 47LW6500 using a PS3 for the 3D Blu-ray playback, and the color is perfect! Maybe those having trouble could change the brightness settings on their setups. All the 3D Blu-rays I've watched look great! If you're looking for something (in spite of the "Not Full 1080 HD" argument)I can suggest the LG's in the LW6500 series. Sure the 55" may of been bigger, but in our living room it would of been way too big. It can also up-convert anything to 3D. Up-conversion isn't perfect, but it's cool. My family loves it! Especially, the little one!
"The Cat in the Hat knows a lot about that!" in 3D anyone? :D
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

So everything looks great on my end. I had a friend come over and explain really quick what Telecine means, and because he knows some pretty damn big words, I think he's the best there ever is and ever will be. I also like saying I'm better than everyone at everything I do. Now as for why my 3D BluRays don't look good in your house? You bought a Vizio from WalMart on Black Friday because that's all you can afford. Not my problem, its yours. I'm not broke, so it looks great on my setup. Go buy something better and it just MAY look slightly better. I mean, what else are credit cards for? Sorry (not really).

Am I the only one who read it as this^?
I seriously don't like him as a director, and his response to a problem is "go buy a new 3DTV/ BluRay Player/ Glasses"?
Thanks dick for telling me its my fault and to go buy better stuff.. He's really shown why I don't support his "movies", if you can call SFX porn a real movie.

Way to misinterpret.

The only thing he said is basically put a call out for 3D technology to have a standard developed so that 3D looks the same on ALL tv's. Thus people won't have to go out and buy different equipment for different movies.

He never said you had to go out and buy different technology, just that if it looks bad on your screen, it's because your technology isn't compatible with his because there's no standard.

Bay is a dick as usual, but he's also right, which he usually is about these kinds of things.

I have a Samsung 3D TV from 2010, and the 3D on it looks better than the 3D in theaters, pretty much without exception. Transformers 3 looks awesome on it.

I'm laughing my A**off right now (and yes, I'm probably going to come across as an even bigger prick than a lot of you think that Bay is, and I don't care).
Stuff like this is EXACTLY why I have been scoffing at the idea of 3D TV since the beginning. It's too $%&@ early in the development of the technology and, here's the worst part, all of you know it and you still buy the @$#% things because you just HAVE to have the latest, coolest High Tech stuff out there!!! Bunch of freaking lemmings or sheep is what you folks are and you deserve the crap results you wind up with.

Or maybe when I finally got around to upgrading my TV from a standard-def to HD, I got the one that had the best picture, and since it just happened to have 3D, I figured I might as well by the blu-ray movies I want that include it. I put literally no thought into 3D at all when I bought my TV, it's just an added bonus.

You were right about one thing though: I do think you're a prick.

i'm willing to bet whoever can even spot these "problems" are probably really really tech savvy folk. i'm sure most of the general population (myself included) wouldn't even notice it. can't count how often i read reviews about picture problems that i dont notice even after its described.

hell a recent example is the first Lord of the Rings EE, with all this hoopla about "green tinting", i didn't see a thing and it looked the same to me. now thats not saying these issues aren't real, just that 99% of people probably wont notice.

as for this particular case, i do have the 3D package but no 3D tv since i just got it for the extras and have no interested in 3D so least the 2D version is apparently not "broken". lol

Great call there karellan - Same here, I hadn't updated my TV since I got out of the Army in 1997!!!! Yes, I know that's too long but unlike what T-Macksimus thinks us poor people with a family to raise can't seem to do much better!!! Other things are more important. So I got it @ BB for the 3 year pay off deal! I bet people now a days can't even imagine going a day without watching TV, my wife and I went just under 7 years. No antenna, no satellite dish, no TV period! I still have the ancient thing in the bedroom though! LOL! I never in my life imagined it had gotten better after all these years. I live in the sticks here but with the antenna I get 48 channels! Well, most come in all the time according to weather changes, but the picture is awe inspiring. We have talked about when our taxes come back trying to get a satellite dish. So, T-Macksimus, we are not all rich and fancy! It was simply a gift to my family for Christmas. It had the best picture quality, and was affordable. It also was listed as compatible with my Nvidia graphics card. I work on computers, that's what I do. TV I could care less about. But I did do my research before buying this TV. I research everything, that's just me. I understand the argument about it not being full 1080 HD because you only get 1/2 of the signal per eye, because the lines alternate, which would reduce the signal. I get that, but with 14 free pair of glasses with the set, 3 free games with the PS3, great picture and sound, which is compatible with my already owned 1000w sound system, who cares! The trade off is it works perfectly for me and my family! Besides if all else fails, I can up-convert whatever I want to 3D! It is bright, perfect picture quality, 1000 times better than it was in theaters, and these glasses do not give me the massive headache I left with. They are light weight, and don't need to be charged up all the time. Plus, it was affordable! Less than I'd of paid if I'd bought my setup as separate pieces. I plan on paying it off with our tax returns, but for $65 a month without any extra finance fees if paid off within three years, who can argue! All this with the added benefit of being able to watch all three movies in 3D! 1 and 2 up-scaled and the last one just as it was released! Think before you judge there people! Not all of us are out to beat the proverbial "Jones'" here. I for one am already old enough to understand that if you don't jump the gun, but wait on things, everything comes down in price, and there are even better deals after holidays! Patience helps the wallet!!!

I still can't see the difference between a DVD and a Blu-Ray.

The only difference I truly see is when you go from 480 to 1080, you get the boxes (pixalization) like on a really crappy .flv video sometimes!!! But with the quality of DVDs now a days, there truly isn't any. Not as noticeable when there is. What little bit there is, is gone in like 1/2 a millisecond as the next frame pops up! The first two movies look great even up-converted quality wise. Honestly, I have watched DOTM multiple times and just can't find what is mentioned. I'll just keep right on watching it, and will probably never see it. Even the regular DVD looks great in HD! So who knows. Maybe Bay is right, it could be their TV is already going bad. I've seen more than a few HD monitors come back, and when I worked at Wal-Mart I seen the TVs come back two or three at a time some days. With all the capacitors in them, they get hot, the caps on them swell up and then one day things go bad, picture dark, etc. Then you come home one day and turn it on and all you get is a black screen. Power light is on, but no one is home!

I couldn't have said it better myself. 3D is crap right now.

Let me know when I can see something in 3D without those stupid glasses that make everything too dark.
I do not blame Michael Bay for crapping all over a huge part of my childhood. He just directed the scripts that were given to him. I blame Orci, Kurtzman, and Krueger, who seem completely incapable of concocting a story that even halfway makes sense.
