I understand the deal with TF 4 and the deal about it being a continuation not a reboot. This is the same deal with the upcoming 2nd Mass Effect Trilogy.
It is going to be a continuation not a reboot set in that same timeline/universe or a 1,000 years thereafter unknown little to nothing is known on ME 4 other than it will not have Shepard or Shepard 2 aka Shepards Offspring/Children.
A new MC, A new Cast of Characters yet in the Mass Effect Universe.
The same is going on with the 2nd Transformers Trilogy with TF 4 going back to its original TF 1 roots focusing more on story lesss on characters that made TF 1 the awesome movie that it was also that and the way they handled the cast & robots together truly made Transformers epic.
TF 4 is largely going to be the same set 4 years after the events of DOTM. New cast of humans though some old ones may still be around.
Also I have my own theory on the redesigns after the events of DOTM they were severly damaged they scanned new upgrades and changed once again new Alt.Modes equal diffrent looks.
