I never thought I’d say this, but I can identify with Megatron.
IDW’s recent Megatron Origin # 1 has done what many may have considered impossible, make Megatron, the ruthless dictator who controls the Decepticons, the very same guy who made millions of children back in 1986 cry when he killed Optimus Prime, someone you can feel sorry for. Someone you want to root for.
Why, you ask? Well, it’s easy.
He didn’t want leadership, he was forced into it. And all because of an all too familiar thing we have here in 21st century America: downsizing.
Of course the fact that I myself am going though downsizing having just been laid off as of this writing may have something to do with it.
Even though I have always been a Decepticon fan since the original TV show and comic books came out in 1984, I never really hated the Autobots. Sure, I rooted for the Cons wjhen they killed Prowl and the others in the movie, but I never really felt hatred or anger toward the Bots. At least not until the Autobot senate laid off Megatron and his co-workers, even going as far as possibly killing one for telling the senate off. Megatron’s actions after that killing, killing a guard himself in a fit of rage, is understandable, and adds to the sympathy we feel for him. Especially when Megatron sees what he has done, and regrets it. A far cry from the Megatron we know he’ll end up as.
I look forward to reading # 2 in this series. Who knows, maybe we will be able to see other “inhuman” Decepticons in a whole new light, and in return, see a bit of ourselves in them as well.
