New PSP is slimmer, lighter.

Postby Robinson » Wed Jul 11, 2007 8:52 pm

What a way to kick off the Sony E3 Press Conference. Kaz Hirai has revealed that a new version of the PSP has been redesigned, ready to be released in September. So, what's new in this version? Good question. Check it out:

33% lighter
19% slimmer
improved battery life
video output
same screen as the current version
still supports UMDs

From what we could see, it didn't seem that much slimmer, but I guess we'll find out when we get our hands on it. Overall the new design looks very similar to the curren one. It'll be worth it just for the increased battery life and video out support. The new PSP will be come in several designs. Piano black, Ice Silver, Felicia Blue, Lavender Purple, Rose Pink and a special pure white version with a picture of Darth Vader on the front. They will be released in bundles. One with a 1GB memory stick and Daxter and the other with the Family Guy "Freakin' Sweet" UMD. The Darth Vader design will be released in a bundle with Star Wars Battlefront. Each pack will cost $199. Great value.

The new PSP will also feature improved data streaming abilities to lower load times and will be able to charge its battery via USB. Sounds great to us! Will you be picking one up when it's released in September? If so, what colour?

Wow sweet, looks like i'll be picking one up when it reaches the UK. thanks for the update dude. colours i like are Silver, blue or white (coz my bro has the original black)

Direct charge from USB sounds good, i didn't know the original didn't charge when you insert it into the usb port.

Yeah that describes the PSP alright, a media player as it certainly isn't a games console due to poor design and lack of original games.

The design is fine for me, I never got into the dual analogs and really never even messed with playstation before my wife bought me the first one. I've always wanted to be able to hook it up to a tv though so you can watch the movies on something bigger than a 3x5 screen.

Two of those are derivitives of stuff thats on the ps2 and Megaman is a remake. Im talking about original games like Lumines and LocoRoco, you know games that actually have something to offer that isn't a cutdown or modified ps2 game, something the ds has in abundance with games like Brain Age and Trauma Centre.

As far as original games go DS does have psp beat, as far as "mature" level games psp beats ds hands down. Whether they are ports or not. Additional features of the psp put it in another league than the ds because of the movie, and music aspect, internet connectivity, as well as additional features that get added with new firmwares. I dont know if DS does the firmware updates like psp because nintendo just started them with the wii.

I think I'll buy the PSP soon, but for use as more of an mp3/video player, instead of getting an ipod video player or something like that.

Some PSP games I'm interested in are Killzone, Daxter, Lumines, and the 2 Socom games.

Exactly. PSP offers console-quality gaming in the palm of your hand, DS is just another gameboy upgrade. If you like "original" games for children with crappy graphics then the DS cant be beat. Like everything Nintendo does is just an upgrade or a gimmick, and the DS is the biggest gimmick of em all (besides the debacle that is the Wii) with the lame touch screen and games (most of which dont even fully use the PDA style feature).

I will say that the PSP has been lacking in the interesting games department in the past, but then again i have been away from the portable gaming scene for some time and i may have missed out on some new and interesting titles. Last PSP game i bought was GTA:VCS (again, another reason to PSP is better, GTA IN YOUR HANDS!), but future titles like God Of War cannot be ignored and by default beat the crap out of ANYTHING the DS has to offer. That said id rather a handheld port over endless lame brain age stupid mario touch screen crap all the time.

Not to forget you can watch transformers on your psp, and listen to "the touch" and look at pics of your transformers collection :p. DS doesnt do that. Then theres the internet and wireless connectivity the PSP has.

In a way, the PSP is the last thing Sony ever did right.

Hey shadowman, looks like im a Sony fanboy as well eh? :P

Meh. They still didn't wow me. Sure, it's nice to have a choice in colors and I thought the ability to use it as a movie player for you TV is cool, but it's still a slight improvement on a broken system. The fact that he used Spiderman 2 to demonstrates how it works is evidence of that.

On a related note, I was hoping Nintendo would have revealed that rumored DS with the closer together screens and more comfortable grip. Definately would have upgraded to that from my old DS "Phat".
