New to Transformers Collecting

Postby BeeastmodePrime » Fri Aug 16, 2013 6:54 pm

I've been collecting Anime figures and Marvel figures for a while and I'm getting bored so I've decided to switch to Transformers. I've started to acquire Generations and Universe line. But I was wonder what are some must-haves or vintages, I should try to acquire to make my collection look like a Transformers collection? And is it better to get many deluxes and legends or invest in premium figures? All comments will help.

I think it goes without saying that regardless of what line of TF's you're collecting, you should have a G1 Optimus Prime.

Found a loose G1 at Chicago Wizard World but the guy wanted $350, it's just waaay to much for me, but I did get a incomplete G2 for $8.

Just collect what you find cool. It's your collection, so choose figures that YOU like. It's not a willy waving compitition with everyone trying to out do each others collections.

Did you watch the TV shows? What era was your first introduction to TFs?
I'm more of a G1 aesthetic kinda guy, as I was 5 in 1985 and that's what I grew up on. Other guys/gals grew up with (as an example) Beast Wars which they would treasure more than G1.

It's all about what makes you happy ;)

Weapon: Battle Blades
Welcome, we hope you enjoy your stay in this hobby for many years to come :)

The best thing to do when starting out is to just try out different stuff. There are parts of the toyline for everyone - 30 years worth after all. Curious about Scramble City combiners? Grab a limb or two. Wanna know if you like Beasts? Loose Beast Wars stuff is very cheap. On the fence with Masterpiece? Acid Storm will be easy to find.

The great part is that if you pick up stuff you don't like, I can almost guarantee there'll be someone around that will pick it right back up from you. Just remember to always have fun, experiment, and enjoy this wonderful eccentric world of colorful transforming robots!

Oh. And get a boxed Roadfire. You need one, in order to learn the secret handshake.

There's a handshake for that? I guess I never got taught since I opened mine.

id say just get what you want. if it isn't your taste, style or whatever don't buy it.

your collection will look like a transformer collection as long as you have a few and they are what you like.

I have no idea why he wanted 350 because it was already loose just standing there, probably thought someone's dumb enough to get it.

Thanks for the advice but I do have more questions, do yall open your figures and displayed them on shelf because all the Transformers collection I've seen online are always open, doesn't that reduce the value or TF collectors don't care about value and only for the love of collecting because most of my Anime and Marvel are MISB? And is it good to get Asian exclusives and 3rd party TF over Hasbro because I wouldn't trust getting 3rd party Marvel Legends, than why would I get 3rd party TF?

Welcome to Seibertron.com, BeeastmodePrime. Great to have another person from the Chicago area here on the site.

If you're starting out with the newers Classics/Generations/Universe toys, just grab some of your favorites. Work your way up to some of the more expensive ones. When I was working extensively on completing my collection from 2000 to 2007, I bought the less expensive figures first and worked my way up as deals and opportunities came my way for more expensive figures. It just depends on what your looking for out of your collection. I wanted them all so that I was my approach. Everyone's got different methods. Another way is just to get the prized pieces that make you really happy and content to have.

Keep us posted. We'd love to hear more about your collection as it comes along.

Is there a limit to spending on a TF, last week I found a Metroplex but no MP Soundwave, so I picked up Metroplex. But at 130, that's the most expensive toy I ever bought. Brought it home and everyone was giving me ****, well isn't it too much, how much do yall spend on your most expensive TF?

Weapon: Battle Blades
My most expensive single TF was $450.

Most expensive single purchase was $850 for a full set of DVD Linkage Microns :x

Most months I get at least one thing that costs over $100, though, it wasn't always that way. Even still, bills and life expenses (groceries, gas, a night out once a week or so) should always come first! The most expensive TF you'll ever buy is the one that prevents you from getting something you actually need.

Welcome

I try to spend about $30 a month. Though, I suppose that all depends on your income, disposable income, and dependents. I bought Metroplex and I am glad that I got him. It is a good buy. I still have toys that I played with from 1984. I have some sealed Beast Wars. But what makes me the most happy are current Generations toys.

MISB works well for Marvel and Anime, it keeps the dust off of them, they are easy to dust, and they act as a nice display. If I had lots of money and space I would buy two Transformers, one to keep in the box and one to open. Most of us on the site collect for the love of Transformers and not to retain the monetary value, meaning we open the boxes. It is hard, but for Transformers it is the thing to do. They are part action figure, part alt mode, and part puzzle. You aren’t experiencing the whole toy unless you transform it. Additionally, being able to display it in robot mode or alt mode is a lot of fun. And you can change it through out the year, you really do get two toys in one. I can have a flight squadron for six months and then I have eight infantry units with jetpacks for the next six months. You don’t need too many vintage figures because the new ones look great. I stick with Hasbro, an occasional Takara when Hasbro doesn’t deliver, and I don’t buy 3rd party toys.

Recommended buys:
• Lots of Generations like you are doing. Springer and Sandstorm are incredible figures if you don’t already have them.
• MP Grimlock (I don’t have money or space for a lot of MPs and most of them will be out of scale, but Grimlock fits well with deluxes)
• Jetfire Classics and or G1 Jetfire
• Beast Wars Transmetal (I love this line, great toys, many look as good as current Generations)
• Unicron
• Primus
• Seekers Generations
• Scourge Cybertron – (the best dragon Transformer ever made, simple transformation but awesome figure)
• Big Convoy – Beast Wars Neo – He is being licensed in Korea or somewhere and is 100% legitimate, and at a very reasonable price since they are producing him now. Yes he is a shell former (you have to have at least one) but he is a wooly mammoth in beast mode, and he is Prime in robot mode, and looks awesome, he has a good Matrix that can come out, a ton of weapons, and is overall awesome!

The only must haves are the character's that you like. I'm mainly a decepticon fan so I tend to only get those figures. But I do have a lot of g1 character's and beast wars. I just started on prime and generations.
