Order of IDW comics

Postby nolga supreme » Tue Jan 13, 2009 3:44 pm

Hey all,

Anyone know the order that the comics should be read in. I am thinking continuity rather than release date. I figure Shockwave and they Dinobots should come first then stormbringer. Really I am trying to put the spotlights in context. I know some don't relate like Kup. (that one is just bizarre)

We should probably sticky a topic like this as it is a large and confusing topic.

Anywho here is my suggestion, I doubt it is correct, but it's close enough that it should not affect continuity too much. there are some Spotlights that can be read between individual issues of the "-tion" books but I have listed the "-tion" books as a whole entry.

Start off with: Megatron Origins if you wish, otherwise skip it.
For now AHM ties into continuity, as does McCarthy's other work, so next would be Spotlight Blurr.

Spotlights Shockwave, Soundwave, Ultra Magnus and Nightbeat are must reads, Spotlight Hot Rod and Sixshot occur before the main story, but as for when I do not know.

Follow it up with Infiltration and Stormbringer, Spotlight Kup, Escalation, Spotlight Galvatron, Spotlight Prime and Spotlight Blaster.

Next up is Spotlight Arcee, Devastation, Spotlight Grimlock, Spotlight Cyclonus, Spotlight Hardhead, Spotlight Double Dealer and Spotlight Sideswipe.

Follwed by Maximum Dinobots and AHM.

And last but not least: Spotlight Wheelie.

Spotlight Ramjet occurs around Escalation (I think) but do not quote me on that. I am unsure as to where Spotlight Mirage fits as to the best of my knowledge it is out of continuity and a stand alone story (as may be Ramjet).

Okay is this getting us close.

Megatron Orgins
Shockwave
Dinobots
Stormbringer
Soundwave fits here somewhere since he know what Bludgeon is doing after Shockwave disappears.
? Blurr
?Magnus
?night Beat
?hotrod
infiltration
?Sixshot falls somewhere in Escalation I think. But I can't find my issue. I thought they made an astrik not about it.
Escalation
Spotlight Kup
Spotlight Galvatron
Spotlight Prime
Spotlight Blaster
Arcee,
Devastation,
Grimlock,
Cyclonus,
Hardhead,
Double Dealer Would this fit better closer to hotrod spotlight but before he arrives on earth?
But cyclonus, hardhead, doubledealer and sideswipe are part of Revolation.
Sideswipe.
AHM

Somewhere Ramjet, mirage, and wheelie fit. I also thought Kup was a standalone. Though how Kup from his spotlight becomes kup of AHM is a mystery. But I may have missed his upgrade.

I combined what i_trunks had and what i have just read. This is very confusing.

I wonder the writers are keeping their stories in line. We know that Furman is a master.

It's closer to:

Megatron Orgins
Spotlight Blurr
Spotlight Shockwave
Spotlight Soundwave*
Spotlight Ultra Magnus
Spotlight Sixshot
Spotlight HotRod
Spotlight Nightbeat
Stormbringer
Infiltration
Spotlight Kup
Spotlight Ramjet()
Escalation
Spotlight Galvatron*
Spotlight Prime*
Spotlight Blaster*
Spotlight Arcee*
Devastation
Spotlight Grimlock*
Spotlight Cyclonus
Spotlight Hardhead
Spotlight DoubleDealer
Spotlight Sideswipe
Spotlight Mirage()
Maximum Dinobots
AHM
Spotlight Wheelie*

* Indicates that the events in the comic take place in various times, however the placement is based upon the main book not flashbacks.
example: Spotlight prime has Flashbacks to events occurring prior to Megatron: Origins, but the main story is set between Escalation and Devastation.
() Indicates not 100% sure of placement, may also be out of continuity.

That looks good. While I have all the books out this week I will read them in that order. THanks a lot. I bet there are others who are starting to scratch their heads at this.

Spotlight: Kup is a problem because of the continuity error in it. Spotlight: Blurr Kup looks nothing Spotlight: Kup Kup even though Spotlight: Blurr takes place seemingly as the war is spreading. Then in AHM Kup looks just like he did in Spotlight: Blurr

Considering that Kup isnt with the Wreckers in Stormbringer I would say his Spotlight takes place sometime before those events.

I'd say that the crash occurred pre-Stormbringer, (as in waaaaay before) but the majority of the events, and the conclusion of the comic could (and I believe do) occur post Stormbringer, and before Revelation begins. So that's why I have placed it there.

Spotlight Wheelie is in a similar boat, we see Wheelie asking for help in Spotlight prime, but the rest of his story must occur post AHM (probably very post) since Reflector is in it.

For now it can be chalked up to just an art inconsistency, and will most likely remain one as long as McCarthy's works (AHM, Spotlight Blurr, upcoming Spotlight) are counted as being part of the main continuity.

I agree with I_amtrunks. Kup's crash is a very long time ago. Then they rescue him much later. His look is artistic license I guess. Is the outback that prime has a flashback to.?

Weapon: Buffalo Missile
Is AHM actually a part of the IDW-verse, or just kind of a "what-if" story?

As much as it pains me to say so, AHM is in continuity with all the previous IDW titles, bar Hearts of Steel and the Beast Wars series.

It is the follow on from Revelation and Maximum Dinobots.

"Pains you to say so" :?: Is the writing that bad? I actually haven't read any of it yet because I only buy TPBs, and it won't be out until spring. I'm always a little behind as a result, but it's just easier for me.

Another question: It follows Revelation? I guess I thought it followed Devestation, after the Autobots leave earth to investigate Garrus-9.

AHM follows devestation, revelation, and Maxium Dinobots. I think these stories all take place within days or weeks of each other. After the main Autobots leave Hotrod and sunstreaker on their own against Scorpinok. Of course we have to wait until the end of the Dinobot story for confirmation on what happens.

I gave the comics a read through in the order we thought they should go. I took some notes of notable events. They are not complete and there may be errors since I could not read my writing. But I think these are right. There seems to be errors concerning Wheelie, the Insecticons orgins, Soundwaves place in time and Reflector. I noted these.

Megatron Orgins—(Bumber Dies), Sentinel Prime mentioned, Sentinel or Zeta prime dies, Swindle already swindling.
Spotlight Blurr—Kup in “normal” looking as he will appear in AHM,
Spotlight Shockwave—Plants energon on Earth and other planets. Will lead to his disappearance and Bludgeons orders to clear the lab. Disappearance of the Dynobots.
Spotlight Soundwave*-- Confusing tale because arrives after Shockwave, By 1984 he is a tape player but ravage and Laserbeak are separated. Gets blown up in the volcano but appears somehow in 2007 in a thrift store? Introduction to Skywatch.
Spotlight Ultra Magnus-- 1st appearance of Scorponik, Zarak, and nebulous. Zarak Dies? Replaced by human Dante.
Spotlight Sixshot-- Missing
Spotlight HotRod—Dealer/Doubledealer. Hotrod’s mission is the orb (not correct name) story continues in Double dealer.

Stormbringer, Nightbeat and Infiltration are could be occurring at the same time.
Stormbringer— Intro to Thunderwing, End of nebulous. Intro to Ark 27. Technobot team introduced.
Spotlight Nightbeat—Intro to the portal continued in Hardhead. Mircomasters made from organics? Given head implant. Meets ark 32. Prowls message to Prime for infiltration issue 6 is received.
Infiltration— intro humans, Starscream finds Shockwaves energon. Intro Ark 19.

Spotlight Kup—Oddly built and left in serious condition possible brain injury.
Spotlight Ramjet()—Takes place within the time frame of Megatron and Primes fight in Infiltration.
Escalation—Dinobots and Shockwave found. Laserbeak and Ravage awakened by humans. Ark 32 arrives with Hotrod. Jetfire finds evidence of _____________Sunstreaker lost. Headmaster arise.
Spotlight Galvatron*--Ark one is Bezulie Expanse with Nova Prime/Nemeses Prime, Galvatron, Cyclonus, Jhiaxus all have gone made. Other side of Nightbeat’s portal found.
Spotlight Prime*--Kup is in repairs, Wheelie is shown.(how does this effect his spotlight?) First Gestalt appears in the form of Crazy Monstructor.
Spotlight Blaster*-- Kup appears in Thunderwings first fight Beachcomber is controlled by soundwave Who should be lost on Earth and Bombshell who isn’t created until AHM. ???
Spotlight Arcee*-- Hunting for Jhiaxus because he made her think she and her instead of he. Or some nonsense. She is insane. Story is set on Garrus –9 penal institute. Return of Monstructor who is stolen. Gestalt tech received by Baniztron. Combaticons are seen.
Devastation-- Night beat sets up for hardhead spotlight. Dealer plants seeds of idea to Hotrod to lead to Dealers spotlight. Autobots leave for Garrus-9 Hotrod stays on earth to find Sunstreaker and Ironhide.
Spotlight Grimlock*--
Spotlight Cyclonus—Part one of Revelation story. Intro Ark 12 Confirmation on Nova=Nemesis.
Spotlight Hardhead –he and nightbeat return to the portal. Nightbeat dies. Mircormasters go back to their old forms and Hardhead stuck or dead in portal.
Spotlight DoubleDealer –Hot rod learns the truth of Dealer finds orb and suddenly the autobots know tons of information. (plot hole)
Spotlight Sideswipe—Verity and Jimmy are revived by Ratchet but never seen or heard from.
Spotlight Mirage()—WHAT???
Maximum Dinobots—Story seems to want to complete the –ation stories and give set up to AHM. But both stories are confusing since the are printed at the same time.
AHM—Creation of Insecticons. (The same bombshell from Blaster?) Hawke GI-Joe ? Megatron figured out gestalt tech with the introduction of Newcomers to earth the constructicons. Sunstreaker no longer a headmaster? Hunter? Trion is a ship. Megatron has matrix, Kup is back but smokes a cigar, does not seemed to be revered as much as Springer made him seem in spotlight on kup.
Spotlight Wheelie*-- Reflector is dead but is seen with AHM. Something is not right. Quintison picture?

* Indicates that the events in the comic take place in various times, however the placement is based upon the main book not flashbacks.
example: Spotlight prime has Flashbacks to events occurring prior to Megatron: Origins, but the main story is set between Escalation and Devastation.
() Indicates not 100% sure of placement, may also be out of continuity.
