President Megatron

Got a great pic of G1 Op or BW Megs? Whether it's 2-D or 3-D it's welcome as is any other form of art outside the custom figure world.

President Megatron

Founder/Leader of the Decepticons, Megatron lives up to his faction’s name. He very rarely outright lies, but he bends the truth to near breaking point, highlights irrelevant but damaging factoids, and encourages the worst to be assumed -- all the while handing out buttons and banners proudly stating “You Are Being Deceived.” Megatron knows he doesn’t have to be liked, he just needs to make everyone believe the other side is far worse.

Although capable of holding his own in a fight, Megatron prefers to get other Decepticons to fight in his place. Some would consider this cowardice, hiding behind bigger bots; Megatron himself thinks of it as making the right friends.

_______________________________
So this is an idea that's been kicking in my head for a good while: an actually deceptive Decepticon leader parodying real-world politics. A bit of low-hanging fruit perhaps, but hey. Also somewhat inspired by Terry van Feleday's crazy detailed analysis of Bay's movie trilogy, at least in as much as Megatron's "disguise" doesn't really hide anything about him.

Gun mode's a shotgun since I thought it'd be easier for a limo to turn into that instead of something shorter/squatter. Plus, it makes a rather grisly contrast to the clean limo and bot modes.

Soundwave gathers, rectifies, distributes -- effectively controls information, on everyone and everything. He ensures that all hear HIS version of events, the version that best serves Deceptionism. All of history, of art and of literature, all opinions and individual thought, all of all supports -has ALWAYS supported- Megatron and his loyal subjects. Anything that doesn't, simply doesn't exist -- never existed. It was just a momentary lapse in memory on your part, an honest mistake, we all make them from time to time (excluding the mighty Megatron, of course, of course).

Soundwave is assisted by a veritable army of (typically diminutive) Transformers, primarily in gathering intel. He cares deeply for each and every one of them; not out of comradery, oh no, but because they all contain so much precious data. Even more if you lobotomize away those useless personalities.

_______________________________
Drones, biased news media, hypocrisy, and George Orwell, all in one bot!

While inspired by his Prime counterpart's noggin, this Soundwave's face is an actual camera lens -- absorbs everything, displays nothing.

I suppose it's a bit redundant to include a flash drive while implying Laserbeak (et al.) is one with wings, but I rather like the visual of SW gingerly holding a lifeless object while manhandling a living, sentient creature. Really sums him up.

A literal and figurative giant amongst the Decepticon military, Starscream believes a perpetual state of conflict is needed for the health of the individual and the community as a whole. You can’t be prepared for what life throws at you if you aren’t already on your toes. Anyone that dies along the way, well, they’d have only weighed the survivors down anyways. As Second-in-Command, Starscream sees to it that everyone follows his mantra, Megatron included. Of course, he could never take on the Decepticon Leader directly (it’s hard to go against up a 20-foot shotgun, even if he’s twice his size), so Starscream instead attempts to guide Megatron (and thus the whole Decepticon faction) towards HIS goals, fighting his wars and attacking his enemies, all to find any weakness in his Excellency’s character. If and when he finds those flaws, Starscream will expose them to the people so *they* can tear their leader to shreds and praise HIM as a hero.

All for the greater good, you must understand. the Decepticons deserve only the best to lead them, not someone who would, say, melt down memorials for scrap metal or inappropriately touch protoforms.

Megatron sees right through Starscream’s plans (mostly), and has been leading his Second-in-Command all along, not to tear him down but to build him up. Megatron fully expects Starscream to replace him one day, so the Decepticon Leader has been careful to pass on all his own guile and cunning to his would-be successor. And perhaps while he’s at it, a successor Second-in-Command to heckle and harass Starscream. After all, you can’t be prepared for what life throws at you if you aren’t already on your toes.

________________
Jets are far larger than trucks and tanks, a fact rarely acknowledged in Transformers -- in fact it's more likely to try to claim a 60-foot jet can somehow end up the same size as a 6-foot motorcycle. Riiiiiight... So anyways I decided to just let Starscream be a ginormous flippin' robot. And beautifully enough his size means Megatron doesn't have to shrink down in gun mode either!

Starscream's jet mode is based on the S-3 Viking, the only vehicle to earn the call sign Navy One... by delivering George W. Bush to his infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech. Subtlety!

Charged with security, Shockwave will go to any length to protect the Decepticon way. Anything that helps the cause is immediately justified for that very reason. If that means sacrificing a few freedoms, or even a few lives, then so be it. Fortunately, most Decepticons are willing to give of themselves for the greater good -- partly because they’ve been conditioned to do so, but largely because they believe themselves to be the victims in the Autobot-Decepticon conflict and thus are desparate to do something. In fact the people’s suggestions are often far more ambitious than Shockwave’s own.

Shockwave (more often his subordinates) scours battlefields for any possible benefits. Technology can be reverse-engineered, POWs can divulge enemy plans and/or be put to work (scientists are especially valuable), and casualties... an autopsy can reveal what killed them, and from there new weapons can be developed. Shockwave is obsessed with finding Autobot secrets, going so far as to “release” prisoners he stuffed with recording devices in the hope to uncover something, anything. But most of those bugged bots end up dead or drunk or lead incredibly dull lives, perhaps he needs a more proactive agent...

_______________________
So obviously I took a very different route with Shockwave having one eye. Soundwave already has a camera for a face and I didn't want to repeat that, and I guess the Halloween spirit got the better of me.

Shockwave turns into an Avrocar, a real-life top secret military flying saucer. Besides being a screwy vehicle that raises all kinds of questions, it's also 18 feet in diameter which would put Shocky in similar stature to Megatron and Soundwave.

That's a really cool interpretation of Shockwave's classic mono-eye.

If you decide to do the Autobots later, be sure to make them just as morally ambiguous. :)

For many Decepticons it is the dream, for others they are a nightmare; the Decepticon Justice Division takes loyalism to the extreme. The DJD serve as bodyguards for Megatron out on the field, taking on his alternate mode to serve as decoys for any would-be assassin. And in the unlikely even that the Decepticon leader is injured, the DJD are there willing and able to donate their parts. As one might expect, the Division has gone through quite a number of recruits. Luckily, the waiting list for membership is incredibly long - even after limiting it to those with the same spark-type as Megatron. Those that make it are completely rebuilt into walking torture devices, and are given one further weapon: a mask in the form of the Decepticon badge. This doesn’t do any physically damage (although some clever bots have found ways), rather it’s psychological: victims aren’t going against a group of thugs, they are going against Decepticonism itself.

When not directly protecting their leader, the DJD hunt down any that oppose the Decepticon cause: assassins, terrorists, traitors, rebels, dissidents, thoughtcriminals, etc.. While this sadly means culling some of their own Decepticon brothers, a great many of these “undesirables” have been successfully rehabilitated, every iota of disloyalty having been burned, torn, blasted, devoured, scrambled and otherwise removed from their minds.

____________________
Conceptually, these guys are a fusion between the original DJD and the Dreads from <i>Dark of the Moon</i> -- a trio of unmarked Secret Service/Police SUVs. Obstinately it's done to give Megatron a motorcade, though it also freed *me* from trying to come up with alt modes that weren't redundant with the robot modes.

Initially, all these guys would've killed/"rehabilitated" Transformers in a very meta way, akin to the Dip from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the Kragle and Poeleesh Remover of Niy-eel from The Lego Movie... but apart from unscrewing everything and ripping off those two movies I wasn't sure how to kill a plastic toy. And then my mind wandered towards slime-buckets and eyeball-monsters and subwoofers.
The hooks guy is taken from the description of the previous Vos -- it's not really apparent from the design but he can split into two; he hooks onto an opponent's limbs and drives off in opposite directions.

And that's it for this little project. Hope you've enjoyed it!

Decided to do some more of these:
Image
Decepticon society is a culture of fear and paranoia, of assuming everyone and anything could be an Autobot in disguise. To help keep spirits up, Ratbat offers many wonderful consumer goods: feel-good movies with simple plots (there'll be a dozen sequels and five spinoffs!), new alternate modes to change into (try a new form every year!), exotic planets to visit (travel to Rigels I - VI and Rigel VII is free!), plastic action figures (collect them all!), soma tablets in every flavor imaginable (a gramme in time saves nine!), and much much more! All proceeds go to better the Decepticon cause, namely by allowing Ratbat to offer even more exciting product.

Ratbat absolutely floods the populace with catchy and provacative advertising, even going so far as to modify his wing membranes to display them. Occasionally, by necessity only, Decepticon High Command will assume temporary control of all the monitors and screens (it's far easier to do this than set up their own) to bring important messages and updates... and to make sure Ratbat hasn't completely blotted out the state of anxiety they've been cultivating.

_______________________________
This time around, Ratbat's got nothing to do with Soundwave. At least, not directly...

Ratbat's car form takes it's general design from the Bufori Geneva and the colors from Goldfinger's Rolls Royce. Not particularly evident, but it also has gull-wing doors for that added bit of flash and battyness.

Developed by Soundwave, the Gobot is an entirely new kind of Transformer, one that only exists in cyberspace but can be endlessly copied and distributed. Acting as a (mostly) free downloadable "virtual pet", the Gobot is allowed in countless devices, where is covertly steals as much private information as it can find and sends it all back to Soundwave. Technically speaking everyone has agreed to allow the Gobot to do so, regardless of whether or not they're aware of it, by accepting the lengthy terms of service and by NOT opt-outing of being spied on. Luckily for the Decepticons, neither the humans nor Autobots seem to truly understand the internet they love so much.

_______________________________
Obviously this is based on internet "privacy", but it's also a bit of a thought experiment on where actual Transformer toys may end up in a few years. Gobot is meant to be very basic, generation one; the user just slides the limbs out and it's ready to play.

Despite the name, he's based off of "Reedman" from Revenge of the Fallen -- a two-dimensional cyclops made up of countless little spiders that go and steal things for Soundwave -- but "reedman" is a doofy name, "Gobot" is a lot more... marketably doofy. Plus... "different kind of Transformer", sets up nicely for humans effectively becoming cyborgs with their devices, etc..

Barricade joined the Decepticon Justice Division with the hopes of becoming one of Megatron’s personal bodyguards, but after finding his spark-type was not a match for the Decepticon leader (he is a match for Starscream though) he was instead assigned to uphold the law on a civilian level. Barricade takes his more realistic function in stride, after all a Decepticon mustn’t allow personal disappointment get in the way of serving the cause, and all who serve are equals regardless of their post.
...though he can still be a bit moody sometimes.

Barricade is partnered with Nickel – an excitable and optimistic recruit with a habit of spouting off Decepticon maxims. She’s just happy to support the cause in any way! However, Nickel’s enthusiasm and Decepticon conditioning can get the better of her, as she’ll occasionally chase after street lights and trash cans thinking they are Autobots in disguise. Nickel hasn’t had any luck so far, but you can never be too careful.

______________________________
Have you ever noticed how the human police in Transformers are billed as antagonists? Barricade's not so deceptive... granted that's a bit moot here since Barry's literally an officer instead of merely pretending to be one.

So... I've actually been making more of these but totally forgot to share them here. ART DUMP TIME!

Image
Soundwave has made use of innumerable underlings in his endless quest to control information. Their primary function is to gather, process, and store intel of every imaginable kind, both on the enemy and on fellow Decepticons (a loyal Decepticon has no secrets!). Every iota of raw data is invaluable, regardless of how mundane it may seem. As such, these lackeys will sacrifice their own minds and bodies to hold more, and more, and more, until they’re little more than barely-living memory cards. But even then one bot can only hold so much…

Prior to their ultimate fate, these Decepticons are often tasked with properly maintaining the collective information. Sometimes that requires creating helpful graphs to simplify complex social issues, remastering damaged recordings (Rumble does a perfect impression of Megatron, for those rare instances when a bit too much static interferes), discarding offensive works that do not fit with modern sensibilities, or just simply asking [citation needed] on dubious claims. Although largely thankless, it is a vital role that lets the Decepticon populace know what it needs to know.

_______________________________
My initial idea was that these guys would've all turned into actual drones, ideally ones used by news reporters. But that got dull and restrictive real quick (and searching "news drones" isn't very helpful), so I went with a mix of 'drones' and surveillance-related things.
Rumble and Frenzy are based on Boston Dynamic's "BigDog" - which, as a military pack mule, doesn't really fit the theme all that much, but since I used real-world robots with treads, wheels, and copter blades I thought I might as well go with one with legs.

BTW, that small text on Overkill (the dinosaur) reads "We Toys See Everything"

Image
One of the first true Transformers, Liege Maximo was instrumental in freeing Cybertron from its oppressive slavemasters/creators and the various alien invaders that somehow believed they had ‘bought’ them, as well as later forging mutual trades with those very same beings (on Cybertron’s own terms, of course!).

Liege Maximo himself originated as a ‘Military Hardware’ robot and thus he was a guarded and protective individual, suspicious of everything but endlessly loyal to his own cause -- traits which lead the modern Decepticons to view him as a spiritual ancestor. Some Autobots, however, claim that the Liege was instead their predecessor, citing how he fought for the “freedom of all sentient beings.” Other Autobots instead label Maximo a bigot, repulsed by his attempts to relocate their own ‘Consumer Goods’ ancestors to a planet of their own. (poor Autobots, fighting amongst themselves…)

Of course, the Liege Maximo was a bot of a time irreconcilably different from today. A bot utterly divorced from the modern era; no one alive truly knows Maximo as a person, or even knew someone else that knew Maximo as a person, and thus no one can say for sure what his views on anything are. Perhaps the Liege would have agreed with Decepticonism, or perhaps he would’ve sided with the Autobots, or perhaps he’d have opposed both. Heck, even basic facts about him are in dispute; for instance it isn’t particularly clear if “Liege Maximo” was even a proper name or simply a rank.
Still, Liege Maximo is a powerful symbol, an inspiration to the masses… and a tool for those with agendas.

_______________________________
Liege Maximo originally had an AWESOME design which absolutely begged for more than just a single panel loaded with speech bubbles... but then they made him Loki (like, literally Loki, but just a robot). Meh.

Maxy turns into a corkscrew-like spaceship piloted by five-faced tentacled weirdos you might've seen in an 1980s cartoon movie based on toys.

Image
Galvatron is a madman, so completely and utterly out of his mind it’s a marvel he functions at all. He rambles on about unicorns, break into a fit of laughter mid-sentance, argue with his scepter, names inanimate objects “Milo”, and generally makes frightfully little sense. On top of this, Galvatron presumes himself to be Decepticon Leader, expecting everyone (Autobots and humans included!) to follow his orders -- and as one might expect, said orders are bafflingly ridiculous, making sense to no one but Galvatron himself. If even that.

Some conspiracy theorists would have you believe that Galvatron is none other than Megatron! They claim that our Leader had met with a terrible fate and is now a slave to an evil all-consuming god from beyond the stars, and that this “truth” is being hidden from the public by Decepticon Command for just-as-nefarious reasons. Naturally, this is preposterous. All loyal Decepticons can see Megatron is alive and well thanks to his daily televised speeches or his frequent motorcade travels; truly fortunate Decepticons might even have had the privilege to see Megatron in battle alongside Starscream. All these Autobot-sympathizers prove is that they are even crazier than Galvatron.

____________________________
There, world, a stagecoach transformer!

A twist on the idea that Big Brother the original person is dead. Megatron himself is for all intents and purposes dead, but his physical remains have been reconstructed into another being entirely. Meanwhile the *idea* of Megatron is kept alive by Soundwave and the DJD.
Or it could all just be a crazy bot that just kinda resembles Megatron a little bit...

Image
Optimus Prime is the supreme leader of the Autobots, a position he achieved not because he won the hearts of the people but because he happens to hold a pagan trinket – the so-called Matrix of Leadership – which he claimed from the previous leader upon their unexpected death. Upon assuming command, Optimus has turned his back on mother Cybertron to adopt Earth as a new homeworld, somehow believing the lives of those small alien organics are worth more than his own kind. Whether the rest of the Autobots agree with him or not is meaningless; Optimus alone holds complete control over everything thanks to his mythical ‘Cog of Command.’ Ironic for one that claims to fight for freedom.

While nearly all Transformers have taken up alternate modes based upon human constructs, Decepticons adopt forms that reflect their personality and function while the Autobots universally hide their true selves behind common civilian automobiles. Optimus Prime himself has tailored his disguise to appeal to the average working man, to fool humanity into thinking he is anything less than an invading warlord.

Truly, we are being deceived.

___________________
Have you ever noticed how, in the live action movies, Optimus' very first action is to find a disguise while Megaton's is to correct people about his actual name? Optimus is still the good guy, but he's also the deceptive one...

I've been puzzling my puzzler sore over what *my* Optimus would even look like. In retrospect, COWBOY VS POLITICIAN seems far too obvious.

DECEPTICISION 20XX

Every four vorns (or 332 human years) the Decepticons hold an election to choose their leader; an honest election where the candidate with the most votes wins, which always happens to be Megatron. Of course, his opponents are carefully chosen to be easily defeated, comically inept strawmen that make Megatron look good simply because he’s not them (though not so inept as to become the stars of the election). Thus the Decepticon populace feels that they’ve both made an impact on society AND have successfully identified and routed out deceivers in their midst. Technically, not untrue…

This year, the opposing candidates are:

Octus is a proponent of manifest destiny, that the Decepticons have the sole right to the entire cosmos. Anyone who gets in the way gets exterminated (or at least kicked off the planet). Under his reign all Decepticons would have to join the armed forces in order to become a “true” citizen, not earning their full rights until they do so.
Of course Octus himself is infamously lazy and hedonistic, in sharp contrast of his idealized warrior-citizen, though he attests that his alien tank mode’s weaponry are more than capable of compensating. Not that he’d ever voluntarily join the battle line.

Scorponok would instead prefer to work with the universes other inhabitants, even going so far as to grant full citizenry to anyone who so much as visits a Decepticon-occupied planet. Scorponok has especially close ties with one organic world in particular, though he is quick to assure his fellow robotic comrades that he’s still loyal to the cause.
Scorponok has launched a number of exotic building projects, allegedly “for the economy” (though it often seems to benefit non-Transformer workers…). His latest plan seems to concern a massive fortress of some type, with himself as the head. But of course, he designed the thing and is running for Leader, why wouldn’t he be in charge?

Went thru quite a few ideas for this one. At one point I considered Sky-Byte and Scourge, as they'd be so focused on each other Megatron would be politically unscathed -- but given who everyone remembers from the old Robots in Disguise toon I quickly changed my mind. So I went with obscure-but-sorta-memorable Decepticon Leaders.

You may have guessed (or known) that Octus turns into a Dalek. Scorponok, on the other hand, turns into a tree harvester, specifically the Plustech Walking Harvester.

A legendary artifact from the beginning of the Transformers’ history (and likely even from before that), the Matrix of Leadership –as the name implies– marks an individual as the Leader of the Autobots, and is traditionally worn inside the chest next to the Spark. More than just a symbol, the Matrix strives to create the idealized leader, altering the very fabric of the body and mind of its hosts into what it perceives to be perfection. Initially it tried to simply re-create its original bearer, but after far too many repeated heroic sacrifices it changed tactics. Continuously absorbing the memories of all who possessed it (worthy or not), and paying close attention to how each bearer ultimately fails, the Matrix meticulously sifts out the best traits to craft an even better savior than the last. It is a slow, tedious business, but the Matrix is patient.

Said bearers are kept in the dark about being tampered with. The Matrix doesn’t want to deceive anyone, but its mission of a secure Cybertron is infinitely more important.

Decepticons have freedom but choose poorly, Autobots lack freedom (ironically) but get better results.
At least, that's the *idea* here. TF media's habit of having everyone besides Optimus who holds the Matrix be evil make all the cameos rather sinister.

The Matrix shell is based off a torso, partly for the meta-ness but mostly following the idea that the Matrix used to be someone...
