No, 幻灯 means "magic lantern", 幻灯片 means slide (or if you want to be very literal it means "magic light sheet"). You don't use literal translations for Asian languages. Each individual character means something but their grouping means something specific. The only assumption Chroma 23 made was in trying to figure what Kidzhao was talking about, but he was off by saying it was for viewing a slide show, he was thinking projector, too. 能看幻灯片 translates into "can see slides". You do realize that the little thin piece of glass you look at under a microscope are called slides right? That makes his canon a slide viewer, or in other words a working microscope just like the original.
