Heres my Classics UM repaint. He isn't entirely finished. I've gotta finish his other gun and add connectors to his should stacks and rocket launchers so that they can connect to the legs in alt-mode.
He suffered a bit of yellowing on the white parts even though i brought the most expensive matt-cote which promised not to yellow!

Anyway i hope you like him.

Man...thats fantastic! I would do the same to mine if he wasnt such a rare find. I love his face, you made him look just like movie prime with lips. I dont know if that was intentional or not but it looks great anyway!

But yeah, post the alt mode pics!

The only problem with it is that the paintjob and styling you gave him is his G1 armored mode that you painted him as, and his armored mode is only with his trailer attached. His straight cab and robot mode is white. He really is a white twin of Prime under his armor. IF you really want G1 accurate, he should remain white and have his trailer/battle armor.

Nice paint job, he still looks glossy. Your pictures are not that great either...try taking some photos outside using the sun for light.

Yeah but to be that accurate you gotta scratch build his trailer and armour, and for one thing you gotta be a bloody nasa engineer to figure out how to do that, and then the end result looks like a shoebox with legs. I prefer it this way. Awesome bot mode and cool alt mode as opposed to awesome alt mode and lame looking bot mode.

Well, I'm no NASA engineer and I did figure out how to do it. You have been over to the Who's Kitbashed Classics thread, so I know you have seen it, and no, the end result isn't a "shoebox with legs"

I did it this way because i don't like the whole idea of him being a twin of Prime. Anyway i thought that was first in the comics, not in G1. I can't remember. Anyway its just a repaint to make him look like UM, otherwise i would have done a scratch built trailer...but im a busy dude.

Besides if i wanted the white twin of Prime i would have just left it the way it was when i brought it.

well, it was in G1. Remember, the original G1 toy was a white Prime with a different trailer that became armor. The DW comics was just the first medium outside the toy to show him without his armor. He always was a white twin of Prime though. Also, even in the cartoon, his cab mode was white too. It was only the trailer that was blue and red.

No offense, but thats what it looked like to me. All attempts to do so have looked that way to me so far. The only one that doesnt is Hasbro's own 6 inch Tit magnus, and even that aint perfect.

That's because it's a mater of form following function. This is armor we're talking about. Armor that has to double as a functioning car carrier trailer. It isn't going to be sleek or streamlined. It's going to be broad, powerful and bulky. That is what armor is.

Indeed, but that doesnt stop the fact that with the armour on the figure looks dumb and lumbering, and not heroic and strong looking like his original design.
I wouldnt take form and function over looks since these are display toys, so they have to look good or they fail.

Sonray, the original design was a brick. It had hardly any articulation. The cartoon version took extreme artistic license. And, secondly, no, thes aren't "display" toys. They're meant to be played with. Magnus' armor is meant to become a functioning trailer that the other Autobots can fit on in car mode. It is all about function, not style.

Well thats a matter of opinion. These arent toys to me, and as soon as we take them and start doing things to them, they become creative works of art, not toys but whatever.

I prefer this version over a brick anyday, thats all.

I don't like "bricks" either, which is why mine is fully articulated. My point is that armor that is still functional as a car carrier trailer that can carry other Autobots is not going to be slim and streamlined, and if it can't transform into said trailer, then it is a failure.

You guys could go on forever!

The fact of the matter is that i based this repaint on the cartoon version of UM, from the original movie infact...not the original toy.

However if im correct they never said Magnus was a white version of Prime with armor on. He was just in one form and although his cab was white and trailer was blue and red, it always transformed into one thing. I believe it was Hasbros idea to make him the twin with armor because it was probably alot cheaper for them to make and then Dreamwave adopted the idea(i think thats right).

And i agree with Sonray, once we add paint to a toy it becomes our own. A personal version of a well known identity.

Hasbro is the one who created the character, and the toy did come before the movie. Secondly, the cartoon never said that he wasn't a twin of Prime under the armor. They jsut never showed him without it on. By the same token, we never see Ultra Magnus without his trailer either. Every time he transformed, he combined with his trailer. The cab itself was still identical to Prime, just white, even in the cartoon

Not really, because yours doesn't have a trailer, and the cab in vehicle mode is going to be the wrong color. That is the biggest problem wih just repainting the cab in the armored mode colors and giving it his armored mode head. That is only when he is combined with his trailer.

Um, okay, Tramp. But qwailo really isn't concerned with all of that, so why are you trying to bring him down by calling his work a failure? I think it looks fantastic -- I wish I had the guts/skill/know-how to take a brush to my own UM and give it a similar coat.

Major props to you for building an actual transforming trailer, Tramp, but -- no offense, seriously -- your UM does look more like a little fat guy or a shoebox with legs than the animated Ultra Magnus. I much prefer the appearance of this repaint even if his alt mode lacks the carrier. And since qwailo obviously intends to display the thing in robot mode, it doesn't make a lick of difference whether he has the carrier or not, does it?

Anyway, good job, qwailo. It really does look fantastic.
