Repro labels? Good, bad, or ugly?

Postby Broody Cuss » Fri May 30, 2008 1:58 pm

Reproduction labels...the purists wouldn't think of using them. For others, they're the best thing since the Takara reissues. Personally, I'd rather display a clean G1 with nice labels, perfectly applied, than a dirty piece with fading, peeling, or mis-applied labels.

Many of my vintage G1 figures have been updated with reproduction labels. I don't know if it detracts from their resale value or not, but I think it makes them look much better and that's what matters.

I've put my G1 collection together slowly over the years, carefully selecting and keeping the very best pieces. But no matter how tight the joints are, flawless the plastic is, or perfect the paint application, mint vintage labels are hard to come by. Let's face it, G1 figures relied heavily on labels. After 20+ years many are faded, peeling, missing, or were mis-applied by an anxious fat-fingered previous owner.

I'm picky about my Transformers -- a crooked faction symbol drives me nuts. Apparently I'm no the only one as a thriving aftermarket label business exists for TFs. Where does one start?

My first choice is to buy an original vintage label sheet. But these hard to come by, expensive, and don't help you with the factory applied labels. And sometimes even the original labels were mis-cut, making them less than perfect out of the box.

The best source for replacement labels is of course Reprolabels.com. I've been buying from these guys for years and their quality has gone up. They offer pre-cut (thankfully) labels for most G1 figures, including the factory applied labels. The quality does vary by figure though. A set of Omega Supreme labels is indistinguishable from the originals. The seekers, I would avoid, as the repros aren't as thick, nor the printed parts as reflective, as the originals.

Other than the variable quality, Reprolabels.com does tend to be somewhat slow for me with an average order taking 2-3 weeks from placement to delivery. I also recently had a bad experience with them -- I never received a $71 order. I've seen or heard nothing after 40 days and 3 e-mail inquiries. Poor customer service like that kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth since I've bought so much from them in the past.

Aside from Reprolabels.com there are the millions of Chinese reprints on eBay. These tend to be hit or miss. Sometimes they are very good, even closer to the originals than the Reprolabels.com varieties. More often though they're unusable because they’re so poorly printed or cut. In the end, I usually end up buying both kinds and choosing the best. This can be expensive and wasteful I know, but like I said, I’m picky about my TFs. :-B

Anybody have any thoughts on reproduction labels for their Transformers? Do you use them? Would you use them? What do you use?

I have purchased several sets from Reprolabels, and have not had any problems yet. Although they are not the same material as the originals, I'm quite pleased with the quality and in some cases they are more durable than original labels. My only small complaint is that they sometimes look a bit pixelated when viewed very closely.

I too prefer a nice clean-looking TF over one with old peeling original labels, resale value be damned. Of course original labels in good condition are better. If I were ever to sell any of my figures I would of course notify the buyer if they had reprolabels. As it is, most of my purchases have been for custom jobs, only my Jetfire has had a full label set. Speaking of the custom jobs, I love the ones they make, including the upgrade and Alternator sets (Jazz!). Great stuff.

Yar, like the wench above me said.

I've been dealing with them for years, mostly I get faction stickers for my kitbashes (i've been using the clear ones) but now and then i'll pick up a set to restore a figure.

I've gotten (off the top of my head), Sandstorm, Scourge and Galvatron. Scourge and Sandstorm were an absoloute mess when I got them. Stripped off all the old labels, cleaned 'em up, tightened the joints, applied the repro stickers and they look virtually brand new.

I've been buying from them too for a while. Since somewhere around 2002 and only one problem to date. It's the fact that I can't seem to get any response on whether they've even shipped my 40-day old order that disappoints me. :-(

Agreed, the upgrades are well done -- I finally have some decent faces on my G1 Ironhide and Ratchet!

they should be at tfcon, I could ask them if it doesn't show up by the 21st. I know there was a little bit of time they were quiet, but they went on vacation or something, I can't recall exactly. or if you want, just pm me your name and stuff.. I got their business card and I think they are a local call. Just checked... yeah they are. Next city over. Anyway, I can ask them myself.

It is highly possible it got lost in the mail.

Whilst I've been posting in this forum, I received an e-mail from Reprolabels verifying my order has been shipped and I should be receiving it soon.

Now how's that for timing?! Sizzling Cybertron, holy heterodyne!!

I ordered from them for the first time about a week ago, I got the Music Label SoundBlaster set, and the Upgrade Set for my G1 Ultra Magnus & Rodimus Prime.

They still have not been shipped :-( They only need to find 2 sticker sheets, sandwich'em in cardboard, chuck it in an envelope and post it - that shouldn't take a week and counting.

 Great news!

Craven Knight, they are located in Canada, so it will take a bit longer to get down to the US usually. I'm in Canada and it takes about a week to get to me.

Aside from the quality of the labels themselves, which I hear are top notch, does anyone know if using these on your figures is the best choice for retaining their value, rather than leaving on the originals? :-?

Oh, well in that case it'll probably take even longer, they ship by regular Canada Post. With stamps.

Probably not, there are some people who don't like the idea of reproduction labels, but it would be no different than having crappy old labels on the figure.

That's what I figured. Just like doing a resto on a classic car it's much better to use as much of the stock parts as possible.

I've sold several TFs on eBay that I had previously detailed with repros. They were quality figures, and I fully explained every part including the reproduction labels. Reprolabels.com has a good reputation and it didn't seem to hurt the sales at all, and the buyers were quite pleased. Also, the repros are also MUCH easier to remove than the originals if someone really doesn't like them.

As long as you're stating that you've used reprolabels people will be okay with them.

But if someone were to sell off a figure with reprolabels and try to pass them off as originals, and the buyer realised after they'd received the figure ... well then there'd be hell to pay.

As long as the stickers aren't complete ****, I think originals give a figure character.

Very true. The Takara Music Label Soundwave looks a bit plain out of the box but with a set of Reprolabels custom G1 style labels looks the ultimate upgrade of the original toy. The Worlds's Smallest Dinorobots labels are cut better than the ones included with the actual toys and even include stickers that were shown to be on the protos but were missing from the final release. The other set I bought for the Alternators Tracks were also great and overall I think it's cool that Reprolabels are doing them.

I couldn't agree more, having these stickers to apply to newer toys that lack detail or accuracy, is a must.
Much respect to Reprolabels and their continuing effort to make our toys better! ;)^
But,IMO,depending on the situation/condition of a gee-wun, if you can stick with O.G you should.

I have absolutely no qualms about Reprolabels. They do great work for the most part. They made my Classics Mirage look even better than the genericness he suffered from straight out of the package.

They also helped me restore my childhood G1 Kup to his former glory. I just ordered some Menasor stickers to give my Stunticon set a much needed facelift.

My only complaint with them at all is that it can take a while after I order them to get here. Otherwise, they totally rock.
