LIONSGATE AND SABAN BRANDS PARTNER FOR POWER RANGERS LIVE ACTION FEATURE FILM

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 7, 2014 /CNW/ - Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a leading global entertainment company, and Saban Brands, a strategic brand management company that acquires and builds global consumer brands, are partnering to develop and produce an original live action feature film based on the iconic Power Rangers property, it was announced today by creator of Power Rangers Haim Saban and Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. The announcement marks another step in Lionsgate's continued commitment to build a broad portfolio of branded properties and franchises with global appeal.

Saban launched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as a live action television series more than 20 years ago, and the series has been in continuous production ever since. It has subsequently grown into one of the world's most popular and recognizable brands, with toys, apparel, costumes, video games, DVD's, comic books and other merchandise.

The two companies noted that, with an extensive and extremely devoted worldwide fan base as well as a deep and detailed mythology, the Power Rangers are primed for the big screen. The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.

"Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level," said Saban. "They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we're confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own."

"We're thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise," said Feltheimer. "The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come."

Meh, not placing any high hopes on it being better than the last two. Not saying Sentai is better, but given current Super Hero movies, only Marvel really stands out as being actually good.

Power Rangers as a live-action film? Interesting... but I never really cared for the idea behind Power Rangers.

As opposed to some other kind of film medium?

It's always been live action.

And this be the third theatrical film thus far (discounting that awful made-for-TV "Clash of the Red Rangers" crossover movie).

Yeah, that's what I meant. Not live-action television, but at theaters.

I have a vague memory of that crossover movie. All I remember is a crowd of Red Rangers running toward the camera.

"Crowd of Red Rangers"? Nah, that wasn't the movie I was referring to. That was the 10th Anniversary episode from Wild Force called "Forever Red", which had ten Red Rangers in it, and it was awesome.

"Clash of the Red Rangers" was an hour long, made-for-TV Power Rangers: Samurai movie that was a poor attempt at a crossover between RPM and Samurai, with Scott, RPM's Ranger Red, being the only RPM Ranger to appear at all in the movie, and never demorphed, among many other negative things about the movie.

To put it simply, it was the worst Power Rangers team-up special ever made, and even regardless of its lousy attempt at being a team-up, it just sucked overall. Worse than the Lost Galaxy/Lightspeed Rescue 2-part "Trakeena's Revenge" crossover episode did.

Give it time. The focus is on the Rangers. We might see the Zords in the final trailer but I doubt we'll see the Megazord until the actual movie comes out. We'll likely see Zordon and Alpha 5 in the next trailer, but I am curious to see how they have altered Rita's minions.

EDIT: It's been confirmed Goldar will appear.

The original series (the one I'm familiar with at least, watched up until they got rid of the dinosaur zords at least) always had a cheesy charm to them, but I do kind of like how this new one is looking from the trailer. I mean it's doing now tired ol' reality/gritty deal, but I think that change in tone might help this movie.

Ho boy, cue the nostalgic haters, because the toy listings are up:

BBTS Listings for Power Rangers 2017 toys

Don't even compare the T-Rex Zord with AoE Grimlock...

Looking at the Tyrannosaurus Zord, I hope that more of that sculpted detail will be more colorful in the CGI models (as is typical in such things like Hasbro's TF movieverse toys vs. the films' CGI models), rather than covered with so much red with nothing else to break up the sea of red and provide more contrast to the overall color scheme.

And that the Tyrannosaurus Zord has arms.

In regards to the new Morpher, It kinda looks... evil. Like an outer space version of Sauron.

I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic about this movie, but every new tidbit pushes me closer to "cautious" and away from "optimistic."

The Breakfast Club Power Rangers. They're so desperate to be "better" than the original source material they decided to rip off someone else's movie. Brilliant! :APPLAUSE:

To be fair, the original itself felt like it is was desperately trying to channel the camp style of Saved by the Bell. ;)

There were three items listed there previously. BBTS must have taken them down.

Probably because BBTS jumped the gun. But http://rangernation.com/ has the images, so all is good. ;)^

Lionsgate has set up a new website to promote the movie, but rather than just make it like any other movie website, they designed it to resemble a full blown digital school newspaper for Angel Grove High (titled The Roar), complete with actual articles written about the students (i.e. - the Ranger teen characters) and events that happen at the school during the movie. This is awesome!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Two sets images of full Megazord toys have been found: one of the combining Megazord leaked by a Toys 'R Us, and one official reveal of the Interactive Megazord via the Power Rangers Twitter:

Interactive Megazord Revealed

As the first set is a leak, and a rather big one at that, do not post or link to them on the forums! The person responsible for the leak is already in big trouble with Bandai, so just like with Hasbro, respect Bandai, Saban Brands and Lionsgate's wishes.

Even ROTF Devastator's CG model looked like a bunch of random chunks of metal cobbled together. This doesn't look like it's made up of individual robotic components, let alone ones that resemble dinosaurs, at all.

The combining megazord looks ugly but it at least looks somewhat robotic and you can see what parts go where. The interactive megazord is basically a jumbo ranger action figure. I'm moving from "cautious optimism" to just "caution".

The combining figure looks better than the interactive version as traditional Megazords go, but I'm thinking the interactive version will be the more screen accurate one (but lacking a lot of color details).

I wonder if this movie will make it to Japan and if they'll do their own, better version of the toys?

But this site's policy is that whatever is leaked and online in social media is fair game. Hence all the leaked images of Titans return we newsed, so applying the same "respect" we do with hasbro would make them legit. Its the internet, nothing can be taken down anymore.
