I think as a piece of fan service its absolutely phenomenal. There's some really cool dialogue, its very clear the developers had a great deal of respect for the source material.
However, and I am expecting a lynching here, I didn't think it was a particularly great game.
The controls are spot on, in fact I think there really intuitive but I just found the game really lacking in the game play department. It felt like a last gen shooter. There was absolutely no variation in what you were doing throughout the entire experience, I couldn't handle the sheer numbers of generic Autobots/Decpticons. The A.I. of both the enemies and your squad mates was frankly terrible, and Im hoping it wasn't just me the got a little miffed to see your companions taking cover whilst you were unable to.
With the exception of the Starscream level, I felt the Decpticons campaign paled in comparison to the Autobot one. I felt that the choice of characters was a bit strange and the boss battles, excluding omega, were very tired and clichéd. And where was the epic Optimus/Megatron battle.
Iv played the online a bit, and ill admit it was quite fun. But realisticly, am I going to still be playing it in 6 months, no. Will I still be playing Battlefield, Yes!
I will hold my head up and say I think Escalation mode is bloody awesome though, I think its where the game really shines.
I know this may seem really negative, but I did enjoy bits of my first play through. The sense of nostalgia was absolutely unparalleled and as I said at the start, its an impressive piece of fan service by people who are very passionate and have respect for the source material.
However I don't rate it enough of a good game to warrant my playing through it again.
Sorry

I have that problem. And boy is it annoying. Doing great in a match, BAM "You've lost connection to the host."

Something else I've noticed that isn't a problem with the game itself, I've seen plenty of people playing as Shockwave (Myself included!) but I don't think I've ever run into anyone playing as Jazz or Demolishor.

I thought that connection thing only happened to me! Glad to know its not just my crappy network. Ive seen Jazz in multiplayer, but I havent seen anyone play as Demolishor. Mybe cuz he sux and no one wants to preorder a game off the internet, when you can just go to a store and do it.

This is how I feel about the game. Except that Starscream level is my least favorite level in the whole game! Both flying levels suck IMO. The Autobot flying level is just too damn hard! But yeah, while I loved it the first time. There will probobly never be a day where I feel like playing it again. But thats where Multiplayer comes in. The multiplayer is ok. I like the ROTF multiplayer beter though. The thing I really like is escalation.

I would love to go into deep analytical response here but I just can't right now. I got this game on release day and I'm still awe struck at how amazing this game is. I can't stop playing it. I can't believe that Gamespot gave this game a 6.5 score. I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion and all, but some of the points brought up in that hideous review were just plain inaccurate and will deter people from buying this great game. How can I trust Gamespot now? IGN and Gametrailers just got a new user while Gamespot will be removed from my favorites list.

One thing I would like to point out (spoilers ahead) is why was ravage was left out during the Soundwave fight? Sorry if this has already been brought up, but I just don't have the time to go back and read all five pages of this thread right now. Also, did anyone else notice that they made Frenzy red and Rumble blue? Does this finally end the 26 year debate?

Okay, back to playing.

Cheers!

Not really. They switch coloring in almost everything. I think the TFwiki has a list of which times one is blue and the other is red.

May be this was explained in the game and I didn't notice it but what do those blue & yellow energy bits from defeated enemies do?

It doesn't seem like they increase my energy or ammo. Nor is there any form of accounting for them.

I'm playing the PC version and am totally digging the campaign mode so far (spoiler: I only just defeated Zeta Prime's chamber of pile drivers on the easy difficulty).

While some of the plot points could use some script doctoring, the dialogue has been thoughtful and witty...the voice actors are acting their hearts out...and the whole thing feels very "Transformers." They nailed the mood. The banter is some of the game's best moments -- and I especially appreciate how they give lines to the otherwise drone-like nameless enemies. By having your victims speak, it seems to make the world seem more alive. (It was one of the only improvements that the PS2 Fallen game made over the original movie game. It's the difference between a sense of taking the life of an individual and just smashing toys.)

I also like how (spoiler?) Dark Energon transforms the old-style Cybertron into a Bay-style Cybertron. It's almost like a shout-out to the fan debates.

They developers have, in my opinion, done a great job of incorporating player transformations into the campaign mode without making me feel like I'm forced into different play styles or genres of games. They also seem to have worked hard to create an aesthetics of transformation -- even objects in the environment occasionally transform, if only into giant turrets. And, of course, Megatron's quest is to transform the planet.

The character designs work for me so far, and I'm enjoying playing the unique characters.

Now for my one big gripe...it's significant, it's been mentioned before, and it has almost nothing to do with Transformers: the lack of any form of chat in PC version multiplayer mode is going to be lethal to this game's replay value. I can only speak for myself, but I generally find half of the fun in multiplayer games to be interacting with other players on the battlefield... whether its strategizing or just banter, even if only in text. When you can talk to the other players, you feel like you become part of a community, and it encourages you to come back and play against the same people.

Perhaps the developers didn't want to add a chat feature for a game that would attract younger kids. I certainly wouldn't want W4C to become some breeding ground for stalkers or something...but the game does lose something without the ability to communicate. I find it most painfully felt in the escalation mode. While it was fun to smash waves of opponents with some other players...it felt oddly cold and distant since we couldn't really acknowledge one another.

If the developers don't add a chat upgrade soon, the PC multiplayer games could die out very quickly.

I was a bit disappointed in the lack of a local multiplayer option, and the fact that your game ends if the host times out or quits, but it's still one of the best games I've played in a while. Escalation had some glitches the first couple of days I played it, but I think the newest update fixed them. The update seems to have incorporated a chat function as well, which I was annoyed they didn't include in the first place.
On the positive, the visuals are very detailed without being overwhelming, and the gameplay itself is amazing.
Love it. :x

After freeing Autobot prisoners on Kaon and you have to escort them, do the enemies constantly respawn? Or do I have to power through and get to the end of that section?

Nevermind, figured it out.

Though I am stuck at Soundwave as there doesn't seem to be a health boost anywhere. Wow, this game is challenging!

An energon cube should pop out of or near one of the sentry turrets in between Cassetticons. You just have to grab it before the next one pops out or it disappears

I really like the game. I preordered it and picked it up the day it came out. I have only been playing campaign mode so I can't comment on Escalation, etc.
I really really like the character designs. I personally feel it's what G1 should have been when it showed them in their cybertronian form (rather then the fact it showed them always looking like their earth robot mode).
Game play was fun in normal mode and challenging enough I didn't blow through it immediately, but not so challenging that I got frustrated enough to quit. I would say I am a casual gamer with ok playing skills.
I thought it was a nice feature that I could pause the game even while it was in control of the characters walking around and talking in a movie section of the game, rather then making me wait till the video section was over to pause it.
The damage effect to your "vision" was a nice touch, as was the glare caused by facing in the direction of the sun. It made it more realistic (and a bit tougher) when playing.
Whatever engine they are using to control NPCs is entertaining. I watched an autobot drag another autobot to safety... well up until I got tired of watching and shot them both. Most NPC's don't really do anything, but I appreciate that the programmers did still spend time on them. I like to go up to them and look at what they are doing and just examine the background. For me visuals in a game are very big. If I didn't care about graphics I would own a wii. Wii's are fun, but not on the same level of graphics that I associate with the PS3.
The banter back and forth between the characters you are grouped with is amusing. I like listening to them and I hate to say it since I am an autobot sympathizer, but the decipticons were funnier. Skywarp, Starscream, and Thundercracker & Megatron with Breakdown were the most interactive and amusing.
Having the other characters around to help you get through the levels is nice and they are well balanced. They help you kill things, however they won't kill the really tough things for you. I find that nice that you can't just sit back and watch them kill the brutes for instance. I only had them kill one by themselves in all the ones we have fought and it took them forever to do it and I was preoccupied fighting other things at the time. It gets old when a game's NPCs kill everything for you, it kind of defeats the purpose of you playing.
The only downside to the other characters are that they get in the way. You are running around dodging shots and swings aimed at you and then all of sudden your character jolts to a stop when you were expecting to go left. Enter your allies. It's a touch frustrating when you get stuck because they are in your way and you are taking blows to your limited life span. However I do like that they are making it realistic by not allowing you to simply walk through them. You can make your allies move, but it takes some persistence.

The only glitch I have encountered while playing was while I was zoomed in on an enemy crawling forward to play sniper, I somehow crawled behind a shield barrier wall and a lower retaining wall right in front of it and got stuck when I unzoomed. I couldn't back out or go forward in either normal view or sniper view. Ultimately I got out by hitting the transformation button and it popped me free of the wall.
I agree with the other reviewers earlier in the thread who said that they were disappointed with the options for creating your own character. Like them I had wanted to take my old HMW team and transfer them to the game, but you are limited to 4 types of characters and limited colors. Maybe if we are lucky they will eventually create a buyable download which would allow more customization or upgrading to your characters?

I really like this game. I would play though the campaign a couple times to collect all the trophies, but most of the replay value is going to be with your friends over or playing against others online since game play in campaign mode is of course linear since it is story telling. I hope that they come out with a sequel. I would really love to see a game made that was designed like Fable, where the storyline varies depending on the choices you make and one where you can simply create a character (either in normal campaign mode or in online mode or both). Don't know how likely that is though. I would totally recommend this game to other people. :)

Okay, I have another complaint here:

Weapon damage is downright retarded. I was playing as Soldier, I had half an overshield left, a Scout marked me then took me down with one melee move. And that's not even the worst case. All the time, I end up dead before I can even figure out where I'm being attacked from.

On the other hand, I enjoy the horrible things I can do to people with just two rounds from my EMP shotgun. (I.e. Kill them)

It might be that you were getting taken out by a higher level scout. If you start adding the backstab modifier and the bonus damage for coming out of cloak, it's possible that a scout could take down a bigger opponent in one hit before you even knew they were there.

It kind of makes the scout into a robo-ninja assassin.

He may have been using sneak attack, but backstab wouldn't have mattered since he hit me from the front. And even then, taking down a soldier with half an overshield is pretty damn ridiculous.

Just finished the Autobot story campaign. Amazing! A fine addition to the Transformers mythology.

The last chapter with Trypticon is intense, even more epic than Omega Supreme.

Love this game to death. A sequel can't come soon enough.

I've got to say, I love the credits too. A lot of fun to look at and plenty of cartoon homages like the Autobots running across the symbol like the TV opening and Jazz transforming and firing backwards like his commercial bumper.

Looking at Wikipedia, it says that Kup, Scattorshot, Motormaster, and Dragstrip are in the game. Did I miss their appearance in a cutscene or voice over?

If they were in there, I sure as hell didn't see 'em. I'm thinking they're included in the DS versions of the game with Magnus and Grimlock and such. Then again, Wikipedia is not always the most reliable source :-?

Have been playing this game for a couple of weeks. Enjoying it so far. Love the campaign. Escalation is challenging as well and it feels good going through these modes with my friends. Completed most of the achievements and am working towards Prime Mode. It's getting kinda hard (more XP required to level) now since I'm not that good in online MP anyway, but at combined level of 81, I'm too close to quit.
