Did anyone see this from the article:

Michael Bay also stated that it takes them something like 38 hours to render 1 frame of the film with the robots in it.

38 hours for 1 frame? There's either very few frames with robots in it or else Bay needs to get moving quickly if he wants to make deadline.

I'm thinking that has to be a misprint. I don't care if you have a million poly model it's not going to take that long to render a single frame. 38 minutes? Yeah that's understandable.

38 hours doesn't sound too unreasonable when you consider how much detail is involved. Plus something like this will most likely require several different types of renders for one frame alone (not sure if that's taken into account).

Sounds good so far, so did the TFW review. Sounds like the movie is going to rock. Well don't that beat all?

I don't think he meant actual hours here...I'm suspecting he meant man-hours. Basically, the hours will depend on how many people are working on the movie. If one person works for 2 hours, you get two man-hours. If TEN people work for 2 hours you get 20 man-hours...a lot more work done in a very little amount of time. That's where the high price tag for this movie comes in: you have to pay hundreds of uber-geek computer geniuses for thousands of hours of work over the course of 9 months to polish the movie effects.
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

The scenes sound like EXACT copies of the scenes from that horrible, horrible script.

So Micheal Bay has made a pretty film? I truly did not see that coming. I am interested in the dialogue, characterization, story etc.

The Autobots interaction intrigues me. As for the designs and how they work in live action. I am very excited to see how that plays out. Describe how they talk if you can Ryan.

Thanks.

Yeah, it does. At 38 hours per frame, ILM have enough time between now and the movie's release date - not counting time needed to edit the final product and ship it to theatres - to render a little less than 4 seconds of one effects shot.

If we imagine that effects shots with the robots make up a total of 20 minutes of film - which I think is a pretty conservative estimate - that's nearly 30,000 frames, or 1,094,000 hours of render time. That's 125 years! Either ILM are running a massively parallel render farm to the tune of seven or eight thousand simultaneous frames - and while I'm sure that ILM have a pretty damn good setup, given that rendering effects is their business, I'm not inclined to believe that they are - or the article (or Bay) got the numbers way wrong.

Presumably it's meant to refer to some combination of human and computer hours to actually set up and produce the shot, averaged over the total number of frames. If ILM has enough people working on the movie in some capacity or another, I'd be prepared to accept that.

I'm impressed that Bay was able to shut everyone up to the point that all they have left to bitch about is whether 38 hours of manpower was an over-estimation, an exaggeration, or a mistake.

Truely.

I'm just waiting for people to start claiming Bay/Hasbro/Dreamworks/whoever paid off TFW, Ryan, and whoever else to give positive word of mouth.

From what I have read on other sites I don't think this review is going to change my opinion of this movie. I have always expected it to look spectacular, the effects to be awesome and the action to be breathtaking. However since I head Bay was directing it I have also always expected it to have a lame story with generic characters filled out with pathetic crappy (unfunny) low brow humour. None of what I have read elsewhere suggests any thing different from what I have suspected all along.

I've been looking forward to this movie from day one. I don't care what they look like (the robots) as long as it feels like a transformers movie. I for one enjoy the occasional low brow comedies. Not all the time, but every once and a while they are good for a chuckle. As for Bays smash mouth exposive style, I like explosions. I hope they are plentiful. I don't care if 38 minutes or 38 hours went into it, as long as it looks good. Can't wait to hear what Seibertron has to say of it. Good or bad, I'll be seeing the movie myself to judge it.

Low brow comedy apparently sells in the country...isn't Reno 911:The Movie a prime example of that? Police Academy? The Naked Gun Trilogy? How much low-brow comedy is in Raiders of the Lost Ark? "Asps. Very dangerous. You go first."

The important thing is that the comedy isn't too complicated for the target audience. With the amount of toy production going into this movie, you know they will be aiming for a younger market than us old geeks; you don't want the humor to be over kids' heads...you want them to have fun. As a kid, laughter is often equated with fun. To be honest, the thought of a dog peeing on Ironhide's foot is a little weird but kids will love it- they usually do. Anyone remember the Futurama episode where Bender hocked his body and he offered the dog sniffing his head $5 not to do what he was thinking about doing...then hearing Bender chuckle "heh heh heh, you just lost $5.." It was hilarious...

I lost my train of thought...
It finally happened. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Yes, I cried.

Have to dispute your math there in the last point. At 38 hours per frame, for 30,000 frames it actually works out to 1,140,000 hours of render time :-P

We'll break that number down. Let's assume we have 75 geeks working 8 hours a day on the rendering. That's 600 hours of work per day. That already brings the number down to a mere 1,900 days for 30,000 frames. Let's bump our geek number to 100 working 10 hours a day- 1,000 hours a day...down to 1,140 days. I honestly have no idea how many employees are at ILM, but we have to assume that a good chunk of the rendering basics have already been done and we're just to the point where we are detailing and editing. My math says that 200 computers geeks working 10 hour days would take about 570 days to render 30,000 frames.

Now my head hurts...

Keep in mind that you don't need someone there for the computer to render. It can go 24 hours a day as long as the computer doesn't need to be rebooted.

I didn't know Bender was an Autobot... :???:

Transformers is about toys, blocky humanoid robots, and a mostly intelligent storyline. This movie has put the toys second, pissed on the thought of blocky humanoid robots by choosing "nano technology" and ape/bug body frames, and dumbing down and massacreing the storyline into something entirely unfamiliar. Anyone who thinks these changes are justified needs to be put in a mental corrections facility.

After reading all the reviews, I truly believe that this will be a lighthearted action film.

It's 2007's Independence Day. All it needs is a hokey man made virus to shut everything down.

Don't get me wrong, I liked ID4, but it definitely was lacking as a great film.

I'll see it.

Yup sure have. And besides those this movie looks to have at the very least a more coherent plot.

But since this has characters from G1 in it I'm putting the story of the movie up against the one of the original cartoon.

It seems what we have hear a completely different set of expectations. I think the difference between what we want makes it seem like we are disagreeing all the time (by "we" I mean everyone). We really just want different things from this film.

I am a purist who demands respect for the source material and quality writing. I believe that could and should translate into a classic film.

That is why I seem so disappointed in this film, because of what it could have been.

If you are happy with explosions, low brow humour and cool special effects then more power to you (there is nothing wrong with that either). But it doesn't please me and leaves me unfulfilled.

I am just refusing to change my expectations. Stubborn, I guess.

Oh no, there is nothing wrong with you having a pureist POV, then I could see how this would be a hard pill to swallow. Just because I like the idea of the movie doesn't mean that others are dumb by any means for wanting it to be G1. I'm sure everyone here wanted that (g1 roots) in one way or another and even us who are supporting the film are let down from time to time. Ok, more then time to time :P . I really do feel bad for all the fans out there that feel like they've been sh*t on because they had such hige and quality expectaions that were not met. Not by a long shot.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, even though we are as a fan base on two sides of the coin it really is a shame so many true and worthy fans are being let down. For that I really hope they doing something for the old fans to, at least compansate for the lack of respect those people deserve.

To prove how low brow I am (and beleave me, I laugh at almost anything) I actually want to see Reno 911: Miami and laughed out loud at work when I read the part about the Aps. I mean loud, it was good.
