Should I open my DOTM Starscream and Thundercracker?

Postby skywarp55 » Mon Jul 30, 2012 1:07 pm

I Just recently I picked up DOTM Starscream and Thundercracker and I am wondering If I should open either one of them for my movieverse shelf or keep them mint on card sealed? I also noticed that the value of transformers goes down when they are opened and loose out of the packaging. Any suggestions? Skywarp 55 out

I own both and they're great, but they won't be worth much if you plan on selling in the future. Being it sealed or opened, you'll probably make 0 profit.

Leader Starscream would be the one to get to sell later, I'd think. The largest versions of each of the Movie characters (HA, Leaders, Supreme (Devastator)) already typically go for well over retail price in the aftermarket. A smaller, cheaper, more common, "inferior" mold like the Deluxe just can't compete.
Can't imagine a non-rare, non-show repaint of said mold fetching much, either.

Unless you wait several decades, then *maybe* you could sell them for quite a bit. Maybe. But you might as well open them up and enjoy.

This,

shouldn't be an issue for you to concern. If you have a figure that 10000 people want, they won't care if it is opened or not. If zero people want, it also doesn't matter if opened or not.

Yup like what the others have said, these 2 are not going to worth a lot in the near future but if you're really going to such open one (since they are the same mold), then I'll suggest TC since if anything, SS would be worth more than TC.. I think..

Yeah, very true. I've sold nearly every movie toy I've owned and the largest gain I've had was getting rid of ugly figures and clearing up the space. I think those 07 Target repaints were the only movieverse figures that people were actually overpaying to try to get, and that was due to the panic that there wouldn't be enough of them around.
That said, SS and TC are sort of fun, mainly for me because they're movie seekers that aren't Voyager sized. I don;t have mine on display anymore (but I kept them), but I do like them quite a bit. So, open yours.

YOU AMATEUR!

Of course you open them. Enjoy them!

You do what you will with your toys, but the fact you are asking the question meant that there's hope to save you.

First of all, do you like Transformers toys? You love to feel them, transforming them, posing them, even going "PEW!PEW!PEW!" with them? Just open them and enjoy.

If you bought these only as an investment, keep them sealed and in the bottom of a dark drawer away from sunlight and dust. Never to be seen again. Until you sell them. If you bought them just for that why bother? You know you can acheave the better results to make money by just investing them in various savings at your bank?

Sigh... And they are not even rare right now.
I too am guilty of keeping many toys sealed. Still, I have a rule. OPEN EVERYTHING BUT KEEP THE DOUBLES SEALED. See these DotM deluxes at 50% off? If you dont have any, grab every figures TWICE. Open one and keep the better card sealed. Transformers dont lose much value even open. Still, that way, you can ejoy your toys fully AND you keep some sealed just for the heck of it.

I got Masterpiece figures and even some G1 or G2 figures. They are rare and expensive, right? Those, I cannot have doubles. What I do? I OPEN THEM, I APPLY THE STICKERS AND I ENJOY THEM! But, for example, I may open one toy and keep the repaint sealed. For example, you can either open Starscream or Thunder and keep the other sealed. This way, you at least enjoy one version of the mold. I bought and open a old RiD Sideburn in blue, but I kept the red version sealed. That DotM Optimus Prime and trailer set was 50% off. So, I bought one to open and one to keep sealed.

TlDr;
Open and enjoy ALL your toys. Just keep the doubles sealed. The doubles you had hopefully bought on sale or for cheap.
Dont keep yourself from living!

I don't know why you would sell your Leader Starscream. That's an awesome figure, one of the best from the entire movieverse. Unless you have a second one that you've opened, I think you'd be crazy to sell that figure.

Why did you bought them in the first place? The movieverse seeker-chickens are awful no matter how you look at them, and like that, their prices are not even possible to go up in the foreseeable 1-2 thousand years.

That said, open them and play with them. They are not much of an investment, sealed or not. Maybe the only movieverse figure worth investing into was Leader Class Starscream and RotF Prime.
