Sit Down and Have a Drink ;)

There's some silly threads in this place (like Manly Thread and Burn's toasted sandwiches) so I thought I'd carve out my own spot. I like alcohol. And sure I was young once, but I'm pretty responsible. As an adult my pallet has certainly evolved, so I'd like to share my experiences and see what y'all have to share too!

I'll start things off with my latest interest/venture: Scotch.
I've tried about half a dozen kinds now (outside of the big names I mean) and found some truly amazing drinks. Last night me and a friend polished off a bottle of Jura.

Image

Image

It was kind of the opposite of most liquors I've had. Y'know if you take a shot of pretty much any hard liquor, you get a burn in the back of your throat afterwords? Well this stuff had a burn right away, but it dissipated quickly and left you with some nice earthy aromas. It was quite a departure from most of the hard stuff I've had in my life.

So take a load off with shajaki and have a drink ;)

In my early to mid-20s I used to get hammered all the time. I didn't even really have a preference, I drank whatever I thought of. I never brought it home, it was always out at bars with friends. I did like drinking rum or Jack Daniel's more than anything else, and I'm sorry to say Scotch was never a favorite of mine. On St. Patrick's Day in 2008, me and a few friends started drinking early, like 9 in the morning. We didn't stop until about 3 the next morning. So after about 18 hours and 200 dollars later, I crashed at 1 of those friends' house. When I got up, I had a hangover for the 1st time ever. The next weekend, we went out again, this time to just 1 local bar (as opposed to St. Paddy's Day, when went to almost every bar in town) and got drunk. The night ended with me getting my ass kicked by 2 huge bouncers. The next day I quit drinking liquor and haven't touched it since. Since then, I drink a few beers once in a while, usually while I eat Taco Bell food and watch G1 episodes. Good times. I got all my drinking out of the way in my 20s, and I don't miss it.

That Jura does look and sound like it could be good.

I went through a similar thing as well. I stopped drinking in my early 20's for various reasons, but around 25 when I was working at the chemical plant I sort of got roped back into drinking. A case of beer was standard payment for covering someones night shift at the chemical plant (where I currently still work). So naturally I drank said cases of beer and it led me me to being the casual drinker I currently am. And I'm not worried about my habits since I only have 3 drinks (max) per night and only drink 3 or so nights a week. Plus the wife says I'm no different when I've been drinking.

I digress though. This thread was more meant to share what your tastes are. You said you have the odd beer Roddy, whats your mainstay?

I am, probably unsurprising to many here, a tee-totaller.

Meaning my poison is soft drinks - sparkling soft drinks if I'm going all out. :P

I almost never keep soft drinks in the house, but I LOVE glass bottled pops. Especially cream sodas. Glass bottles are such a lost art, and when I have them it's usually a road trip situation ;)

My go-to is Miller Lite, though once in a while I go for High Life. Never been a fan of Bud or Bud Light, when I drank regularly it used to be Heineken and Coors. I must make a correction to my previous post: I didn't completely quit hard liquor, I just don't drink it straight up. I still enjoy Kahlua Mudslides once in a while.

MGD is nice and I buy it once an a while. But when I'm going for a beer like that, I usually go for this:

Image

Up here (Canada) we only started getting it the past couple years or so and it STILL can only be found in cans and on tap. I'll drink bottles above cans any day, but even in cans its pretty good. Tap is delicious though.

I'm a Sam Adams man, myself. They haven't made a flavor yet that I don't like, but winterfest is hands down my favorite.

I like my beer dark and pricey, which helps to keep the drinking under control. Also a big fan of craft beers.

Never was a huge fan of hard liquor, but when the mood strikes, I'm rum and coke all the way. Preferably Captain Morgan's rum.

My wife is a big fan of wine. She'll drink pretty much any kind, I only drink red, sweet, and fruity wine.

Well it's holiday Monday here in Canada, cheers!

Image

This friends, is a home grown golden Canadian lager. In my opinion, its everything that the other Canadian beers should aspire to be (because I'm convinced that Molson Canadian only sells because its called "Canadian"). Its simply a clear, crisp, offensive in no way beer. Even the other Sleeman's beers are worth trying. Cream Ale, Honey Brown, Silver Creek... anything other than Clear or Light really. Give them a try if you can find em ;)^

I'm drunk right now! Usually am when i start posting on this site.

I'm a scotch guy. But at the moment i'm drinking Knob Creek straight bourbon whiskey.
I drink beer and whiskey exclusively 90% of the time. I flip flop and explore different drinks all the time though. An Old Fashion is a tasty cocktail i drink regularly.
My beer is always Labatts Blue. I'm a lager/pilsner beer drinker. I've farted around with every type of beer but at the end of a hard worked day i like it clean and crisp. Lagers are my beer of choice. IPA,Stouts and Ales are far too rich for my pallet.

Knob Creek... I've seen that. How is it? What's your Scotch of choice?

Oh man Burn... last Saturday I'm pretty sure I had heat stroke! I was at the inlaws drinking beer (bout 5 or 6, normally not even close to making me ill) on the porch BBQ'n and it was about 30*C. I felt fine till about 5AM and woke up.... lets just say "sick".

So:
outside + heat + time x beer(no water) = bad

We're still hitting the mid-20's here. Overnight we might be getting down to 15.

And yes, beer may be good to drink during the hot days, but you definitely need the water to back it up. We all seem to learn that lesson the hard way.

My favourite beer to drink is Boréale Blonde. It's so crisp and refreshing.
Here is the origin of the company:

Founded in 1987 by three students at the Université du Québec à Montréal (Laura Urtnowski, and brothers Bernard and Jean Morin), who paid their way through school selling home made beer, decided to try their hand at establishing a commercial brewery. Thanks to a small loan, the company was established. The students loaded their first four kegs in the back of the family Subaru and went looking for their first client. They managed to convince 4 bars in Montreal to carry the brew, and the resulting surge in demand helped the company expand several times.

And Shajaki, I do like those glass bottle soft drinks, here is my favourite:

Oh Will, tuggin on the ol heart strings :x

I have not seen the Boreal before, but I'll definitely see if I can find it.
And I LOVE glass bottled pop. I'm so sad that its mostly a thing of the past. Whenever I see a new glass bottled pop I usually try it. Stewarts is good stuff, Boylan *meh*, but my favorite one... I can't remember the name of. Flavors though, Cream Soda is what I always grab. Root Beer after that, but almost nothing beats fountain A&W in a frosted mug.
